I just came across the site
http://www.unlock-the-iphone.com/
It claims that it can unlock the iphone 3g. There also is a review from a customer(doubt) that it unlocked his iphone 3g
Has anyone tried this?

Considering it says it can unlock software versions 1.4-1.9 that don't even exist I wouldn't trust it. I'd wait for the unlock from the dev team.

Pack of liars. There is no software unlock yet. When one comes out, it will be free, and it will be from the Dev Team.

Well considering you can pay via Paypal there is no risk in trying, instant money back if it doesn’t work by opening a dispute. I’ve just bought and it’s a PDF file with links to a lot of custom firmware

As expected the only thing it does is jailbreaks the 3G, I emailed them asking if I'm doing something wrong and that's why it's not unlocking it but no reply yet. Also opened Paypal dispute so at least I've not lost anything.

No updates at all, all you get for buying is a PDF which links to custom firmware which jailbreak the phone and also a copy of QuickPwn.
PM and I will send the PDF link

tried it and it doesnt activate the phone post install of the custom firmware, which kinda leaves me in a hole, as neither quikpwn or pwnage supports the custom firmware supplied. So, either i have a pwned, non unlocked iphone, or a possibly unlocked, non-activated iphone lol. Anyone know if there's any way of simply modifying rather than replacing this firmware to activate the phone?

This guide works with iPhone's up to the latest 2.0.2 firmware version!
1. Connect device (iPhone) to iTunes 7.7, and restore it. This will clean your device from data
XP: click start, then run, then copy the code below into the run box:
%appdata%\Apple Computer\iTunes
%appdata%\Apple Computer\iTunes
OSX: browse to ~/Library/iTunes/Device Support/
Delete the folder called “Device Support” if you see it.
3. VISTA: Click start, copy code below into the search box, and press enter:
2. Download this small file
4. Create a new directory called “Device Support”, and copy the downloaded x12220000_4_Recovery.ipsw
into the “Device Support” folder you just created.
6. Steps 6-11 enter DFU mode. DFU means Device Firmware Update. When placing your device into DFU Mode
it does not load the OS before attempting the restore. If there is anything on the screen the iPhone is NOT in DFU mode.
In DFU mode the Device has a blank screen as if it were switched off, but iTunes shows it in recovery mode. Follow the
steps below to get the device in DFU mode.
7. Open iTunes, and connect the Device to your Computer.
8. Press, and hold the Home button and the Sleep/Wake button at the same time.

9. After exactly 10 seconds release the Sleep/Wake button. Continue holding the home button until you iTunesevice in
pops up a message telling you that it has detected a Device in recovery mode.
10. The Devices screen will remain black like pictured below.
NOTE: It may take a few attempts to get your Device into DFU mode. Generally, I hold
down both buttons then release the Power button just before I think the Apple logo would
appear. If you are still holding both buttons down, and you see the Apple logo you are
holding them down for too long! If you get stuck on the apple icon hold the power button
to get back to emergency mode and start back on step 6.
11. Once your Device is in DFU mode, and detected by iTunes, click on the Device in iTunes
WINDOWS: Hold the SHIFT key, and click on restore.
MAC: Hold the OPTION key, and click on restore.
12. Browse to the folder where you downloaded the larger .ipsw in step 5, and select it.
iTunes will then extract the file, and take about an hour to complete the process.
13. Once completed you are given the option to “restore the backup” or “set up as new Device”. I strongly recommend
choosing “set up as new Device”, but if you want to choose “restore the backup” you can try it here. If after restoring
the backup the device does not function properly then you will need to repeat this entire process and choose “set
up as new device” at the end.
Congratulations. The process is complete.

Just found this, its a scam site, shame. http://www.modmyifone.com/forums/unlocking-activation/326811-iphone-3g-software-unlock.html
Well, I couldn't resist and I tried this out. The good news is that it actually does unlock the phone… sort of (you need to have a valid AT&T plan for the first activation.
I used the iPhoneUnlocker3G2.02.ipsw file.
It's also important that you also put the x12220000_4_Recovery.ipsw in the "Device Support". This is probably the key to the unlock.
After the restore, Cydia is installed, but not Installer.
Even though the restore file indicated it's 2.0.2, it is in fact, 2.0
You need to to plug it into iTunes for the initial activation with a valid AT&T SIM.
Once that was done, I was able to switch SIMs and make/receive calls with no 'Invalid SIM' errors and no need to connect to iTunes.
I'm going to try upgrading to 2.0.2 now and see if it remains unlocked.

And the other SIM you put is not an other AT&T SIM? I tried it twice on two phones and never worked
It is another AT&T SIM. However, prior to doing this, I was unable to use any SIM except the original iPhone activated one. Unfortunately, I don't have a non-AT&T SIM available to test. We only get Verizon and Cingular down here, although T-Mobile are coming later this year.
Did you get the latest files from http://www.unlock-the-iphone.com/order_complete/ ? and did you put the small device driver file in place?
I also just upgraded to 2.0.2. I left the small file in the Device Support dir and I can still switch SIMs with no issues.
It's probably of limited use for most people, but it's useful for those of us that swap handsets or share them around the family. Just pick a phone and stick the SIM in.
One other thing. I also tried one of the old Cingular 64K SIMs. Not surprisingly, that doesn't work. It just shows no service.

Quit wasting time. If there is a way to software unlock the phone, you won't be the first to "discover" it.

I guess you have a stick up your arse pretty far and can't see what I am saying.
If there is software unlock, you will read about it before you would need to google a website that claims they can do it.
As for using another sim card, I have always been able to put in any sim card into the 3G phone without itune activation. Not sure what sim card or what 3G phone you been using.
I am simply saying this, quit wasting time with these garbage sites, and if there is software unlock, you will read about it on the front page of MacRumors.
Ps. Having to plug in your phone into iTunes then being able to swap other AT&T sim card means absolutely NOTHING. Go and search for Jailbreak...

No stick up my arse thanks and the only time I've wasted is having to respond to your annoying and pointless one line post implying that I was in some way striving to be the first to find an unlock for the iphone. Now, if you had taken the time to start with the post you just made, then it would have been a useful contribution to thread.
So, with that out of the way, let's discuss how you are able to switch SIMs without activation and I am not. What are the plans on the other SIMs? Are they data plans, iPhone, BlackBerry, or voice only plans? Judging by your use of the word 'arse', I'm also betting you're not in the USA?

Who the hell cares where I am from?
My one liner was simple and to the point. There isn't software "unlock" and there's only one definition of unlock, which is allowing any legitimate sim cards to work using iPhone. Perhaps you should be the one starting a new thread about your new discovery of swapping sim cards, as oppose to continuing this thread about a scam site.
There's no information here, other than this site is a scam and it is packaging jailbreak software as "unlock" software.

Oh FFS. It matters where you are from because your ability to change SIMs with your carrier might not be true with AT&T.
The OP asked for people who have tried this "unlock" method. If you had actually tried this method you would know it's more than a jailbreak due to the additional Device Support file.
You obviously have nothing useful to contribute to the thread so why not run along and ruin another thread.

What additional device support, what does this "scam" site offer beyond deceiving people with "unlock" and getting slow people like yourself to buy it.
What is there to contribute to this thread other than closing it and save ANYONE else that may pay for this scam?

Here's an idea… why don't you make a useful contribution by downloading the files and doing some analysis. Your vast experience of unlocking and jailbreaking should be able to clear things up once and for all. It will be you chance to 'save' us all from wasting our time and bricking our phones.

The validity of their claims was established long before you decided to troll the thread. However, some of us have a little more intellectual curiosity than yourself. There are still a lot of unanswered questions surrounding their method and intent. Not least of which is the purpose of the "Device Support" file.
If all your questions are answered, then great... go away and entertain yourself in some other thread.

There is no validity to their claim. All you are doing is jailbreaking your iPhone which will allow you to use ANY AT&T SIM card without having to activate. The iPhone Dev Team had this done almost 2 months ago (as in right after the iPhone 3G was released). Try putting a T-Moblie SIM card in your iPhone 3G and see what happens.
Clearly you have no understanding of what unlocking means so quit posting on a subject you just don't understand. Until you can prove it's unlocked by trying another carriers SIM and posting screen shots proving it YOU have absolutely nothing to contribute to this thread.
There is no validity to their claim.
Yes, we all know it doesn't. That fact has been established and has been confirmed by someone who actually went through this process. Nobody in this thread has claimed it unlocks the phone and allows you to use any non-AT&T SIMs.
All you are doing is jailbreaking your iPhone which will allow you to use an AT&T SIM card without having to activate. The iPhone Dev Team had this done almost 2 months ago (as in right after the iPhone 3G was released). This is where there is some confusion. Even after jailbreaking my phone, I still had the invalid SIM error when switching between AT&T SIMs. However, if as you say, SIM swapping has only been possible for the last 2 months, then that may explain the confusion. When I first jailbroke the 3g, I couldn't swap. The same was true with the 2g prior to unlocking. This might be the only useful information out of the last dozen posts.
Clearly you have no understanding of what unlocking means so quit posting on a subject you just don't understand.
:sigh: Why
You obviously have no understanding of the concept of civility. Maybe you should quit posting, period.
I'm posting on this subject because the OP wanted to know if anyone had tried this method. I have tried it and posted my results. I know exactly what unlocking and jailbreaking involves. I have been doing it for many years starting with an old Motorola brick from the early 90s.
As you are such an expert on the subject of iPhone unlocking, perhaps you can explain the purpose of the extra file in the "Device Support" directory?

You claimed twice in one post that it "unlocked" the iPhone 3G. And there is no "sort of" unlocked. That's like sort of pregnant or sort of dead. It is either unlocked or not. A person is either pregnant or not. A person is either dead or not. There is no sort of about it.
As for your problems with the unauthorized SIM, I don't know what to tell you as many have jailbroken their iPhones (both 1st gen and 3G) and been able to use other AT&T SIMS without having to activate. Why you were not able to do so is beyond me.
As for the extra file in the "Device Support" directory, who knows. I refuse to download let alone use programs from websites that make false claims.
Nothing more needs to be said.

Oh FFS. It's like being back in school here. Anybody with an ounce of intelligence could read the posts and determine exactly what the procedure did for me. If Apple can have "sort of push" and "sort of enterprise ready" and "sort of half the price", etc. then I can have sort of unlocked.

Great. Then you won't have any need to post in this thread anymore (although that's what CocoaPuffs said and he couldn't stay away).

1. AT&T does not offer insurance on the iPhone. Trust me, I got 12 letters from the insurance provider Assurion advising me that they do not cover the iPhone and the insurance was canceled.
2. Yes. If you do not report the phone stolen so that AT&T can lock the SIM card it can be used. Furthermore, the person the found it can just get their own SIM card and put it into the iPhone and activate service on the new SIM card. You won't get charged for their calls but the iPhone is definitely usable. There are rumors that if you get a police report AT&T may lock the imei number so that it can't be used but there is nothing confirmed on this.
The only advice anyone can give you is to be aware of your surroundings and don't leave your iPhone in a position where it can get stolen.

FYI, State Farm offers insurance for iPhone or other similar item as part of their Personal Article policy. $30 or so a year would give you protection for your phone.

If a a software unlock is ever find to be true for the phone you won't need to come to a sub-forum. It will be front page news. My friend the other day who has an iPhone told me it had been unlocked and then sent me some very vague links, this person is otherwise intelligent. I explained the same thing to him as I am saying to the OP now. The power of wishful thinking is very strong, scam artists know this and prey upon it.
FWIW I can unlock your phone if you private me all of your sensitive, personal information. I have a solution that the world has never heard of. It has been tough keeping it secret but I have managed to do so.
THE END OF THIS POST IS MEANT IN HUMOR PLEASE DON'T PVT ME

This is exactly what I said in a single sentence, but apparently it was hurting paj's feelings and discredited his greatest discovery.

Here we go again. It actually seems as if you're the one getting upset. Probably because your self proclaimed expertise on all things unlocking related, along with your offer to 'save' us all, was called in to question. In an attempt to save face, you even childishly accused me of owning the website.
The thread was started asking if people had tried this process. I responded by describing my findings after carrying out the process. Nobody is claiming some 'great discovery'. (except maybe the source website).
The fact this process doesn't unlock the phone to allow any SIM was established before you started trolling the thread. Had you bothered to read you would have noticed that. You would also have noticed that the reason this method attracted more interest than probably warranted, was due to the additional device support file.
So... in case you still have trouble reading the thread. Nobody is claiming some great discovery and we all know this doesn't unlock the iPhone. Additionally, despite your naive and childish accusation, I do not own, nor am I affilliated with the website in question. Is that clear enough for you?

You must have a lot of free time to be responding each of my one-liners with 3 paragraphs. You must be a fool to show interest in a scam, and even worse when you're defending it.

I have plenty of free time thanks. I also take the time and courtesy to read threads before blindly posting. I can only assume you also have plenty of spare time. By your own admission, there's nothing left to say in this thread, yet you're still here.
You must be a fool to show interest in a scam, and even worse when you're defending it.LoL. So instead of owning the site, now I'm only defending it? Come back in another couple of days and see what else you can up with. Perhaps a more apt definition of your 'fool' would be someone who blindly posts without thinking or reading the material in front of them.

This is quite amusing the fact that you are changing subject after admitting you're a fool.

A whole lot of posts to say, "You cannot unlock your iPhone 3G right now."
Sigh.
Let's stop here. Most of the more recent posts in this thread are derogatory anyway.
