I was just given a g3 clamshell 300mhz and have been to multiple forums and even more memory sellers. For the life of me I can't figure out what 512mb ram will work with my unit if any.I am trying to go on the cheap since as a grad student I am flat poor. Also will the 300mhz clamshell take a combodrive from a later model clamshell.I am completly new to mac and this has me very stressed an confused please help.

You should be able to install a PC100 512mb sodimm in there no problem. And yes, you should be able to install a DVD/combo drive in there. Don't plan on doing much of anything but word processing. What OS do you plan on installing? Tiger wouldn't run too well but it is possible but will require some tricks since your ibook is lacking Firewire port. Good luck and welcome to the wonderful world of OSX :)

I have 10.3 os

I am mainly going to use it for web and email .

OK good.

Don't expect a whole lot for web if you are planning on visiting YouTube.com or other Flash-based websites as they are processor intensive. Your model is also pretty much lacking video memory too but for basic web and email, it will be a good machine. The memory upgrade and a faster hdd will definatly improve those areas.

Nah no you tube just google ebay etc.

I just found a website selling ide to compact flash kits for these as a hard drive replacement.Sounds neat but I am concerned with the cf lifspan as a drive.I may still give it a go just out of curiosity.

The problem with CF drives is they are slow unless you go for the Extreme IV or something, but they are expensive.

I got one recently for my own entertainment (466mhz clamshell) and hoped it would double up as a computer for the kids to play on. However, as you say flash based websites are not up to much - all good kids websites are flash based unfortunately. Will doubling the ram up to 512mb help with this or is it purely a processor issue?

You will need a faster computer. My girlfriends kids used to play those kids games on my G3 iBook 900mhz and that machine played them well. I don't think a 466 ibook would handle it so well, even with upgraded ram and such.

Ok, thanks for letting me know. Kids will have to make do with basic functions or sharing the faster computer in the house for now then. :)
