Exciting. Can't wait to see the latest ipod touch. And the macbooks in October too. Just bought my macbook a few months back but its still interesting to see how everything is going to evolve.

Im just hoping theres a 16gb nano, my small-ish music collection currently spans about 9gb so the 8gb nano is just too small, and i dont want a touch/classic as i need it for fitness stuff - sweaty fingers on a touch = no, big classic whilst jogging = no.
so a nice 16gb nano please :D which would be awesome. AS LONG as they dont make it butt ugly - not impressed with case designs/mock ups so far but i felt the same way with the fatty and now love that.
A price drop would be nice too :D

Every Keynote is an absolute highlight for me. Doesn't matter if it's about new iPods and not the by me wished mac updates.
But I can imagine to get the expected facelift of the mac notebooks in this event, too. The main trouble will be about the iPods, ok, but I guess we can also hope for new MacBook/Pro Stuff!

Any chance iphone's get bumped to 16 and 32?
I don't know...probably not. Though I'll finally be an iPhone owner once they release a 32 GB model, so I hope so!

Yes, I want to join this event. thanks for confirmation.http://www.crackcocaineaddictiontreatment.com
I'm not suprised at the news of an upcoming ipod event, with Apple, releasing refreshed ipod is just business... I don't need one, my 1G iPhone is still perfect for me. However what I do need to do is replace my aging Powerbook G4 soon, and they have to release the uber MBP I've been waiting on soon!
My friend just sent this to me
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Acer-Aspire-6920G-Hard-drive-Integrated/dp/tech-data/B0017MCIPA/ref=de_a_smtd
And it has me worried, this laptop is only £679 with BluRay, 4Gig RAM decent Core2Duo and 512 Graphics. Now besides the BluRay, the latest MBP beats this system hands down, but the price difference is so extreme!
I will never switch back, I will pay the extra money for having OSX, better build quality, the Apps and don't mind one bit. But If I see a new MBP come out that doesn't have BluRay and HDMI output while this bargain basement laptop does I'll probably scream.
The worst part, my best friend is getting his first personal computer after sharing with the family for years, he loves my mac and loves OSX so also awaits the new MBP but when he sees this Acer doing all he needs minus £500 ish, what can I say?
Please be careful apple...

Like AIM, they should release an iTunes Lite. It's the same as iTunes except without all the extra baggage that most people don't use. It'll be stripped down, small, and fast (and without ads, if iTunes has ads...I don't know).
Just my thoughts.

Re point 2, it's unlikely they would move to mini-USB because they make lots of money licensing the dock connector to third parties.
I actually think Apple will stay with the iPod dock connector on the 4G nano, mostly due to the huge number of third party hardware that use these connectors (speakers, stereo clock radios, and even car stereos). Apple would throw away too much of the market if the 4G nano goes to the Mini USB connector.

It's an Acer.....If you want to take a chance on the Acer quality record and on a notebook that will not run MacOS X, then by all means have a look at it. It's really not much different than other lowend PClone notebooks, and as far as power goes, it's similar to a MacBook, current generation. As to HDMI connections, you do know there are DVI to HDMI adapters to be had for about $6, right?? That said, it would be nice to know if a refresh is coming for the Mac notebooks.

Oh I know Acer aren't going to give the build quality of a mac, and I have no intention of getting one. I have defended macs to the bitter end with my windows pals, but the spec of this laptop has made me sit upright and think Apple needs to start adding basic specs to the laptop range that now even an Acer has!
I know of the DVI adapter, but that's not the point, DVI isn't the future anymore, HDMI is, In fact most TV's and monitors have skipped DVI, moving from VGA straight to HDMI.

HDMI includes video AND audio, while DVI includes only video. That's why HDMI is superior, for example when connecting a computer to HDTV. Apple should replace DVI with HDMI, and sell customers a HDMI>DVI adapters if some people need it.

Here is what I see happening:
iPod Shuffle: 2GB & 4GB, new colours
iPod Nano: 8GB & 16GB, redesign, slight change of interface, price drop
iPod Touch: 16GB & 32GB, slight redesign, possibly new feature(s) (GPS?), price drop
iPod Classic: 120GB & 240GB, slight change of interface
iTunes 8: change of interface, less computer resources, new features

Here are my opinions regarding the rumors that are coming out about this year's iPod releases...
iPod Nano:
I really hope that Apple doesn't stick with the design that Kevin Rose claims to be the case. It seems like a huge mistake and something that is definitely not Apple. I think that if they can make a Nano with the current design characteristics (just tall and not fat) then they may have a winner...also if the make the click wheel controls dynamic (OLED backlit controls + accelerometer). I think that it will use the normal iPod interface. The iPhone OS is touch based and Apple isn't going to create a third development platform.
iPod Touch:
I don't believe Apple will do too much to this model. I would love to see it get exterior volume controls and a speaker for game play. Also (and I know this is probably not a popular position) I would love to see it get a plastic back like the iPhone simply for WiFi reception reasons. Other than that, all new features will be part of iPhone OS 2.1 (available for all iPod Touch and iPhone users).
iTunes 8.0:
It has been 2 years since the release of iTunes 7 (funny, when iTunes 5 and 6 were released a month apart). I do believe that Apple will release iTunes 8 on Tuesday. Now I am not sure what will be in it. I really hope that Apple DOES NOT decide to release iTunes Unlimited. Jobs has gone on record numerous times stating that a subscription service for music is a brain dead idea. Also since they are trying to make their music DRM free, it would be a complete step back to attempt this type of business model.
Other Items:
I don't believe that Apple will use this to release new Macbooks and Macbook Pros. I think they will get their own stage (perhaps sharing it with iLife '09 like last year).
I think maybe we will see new Apple TV features. Although it will probably never will happen I would love to see what a DVR would look and act like if Apple made it and the hard drives in those devices are big enough that it could work. People would buy that device if it had a DVR in it (I think).
Anyways, those are my thoughts on this device.

Nah, it'll have TWO 9800GT's as well as dual quad cores, 10 hour battery life, an OLED display that actually emits "carbon credits" when turned on, and 8 GB of RAM standard as well as a standard 500GB flash drive! ;)
I can get behind all of that except the OLED screen :D
And honestly I'd sooner have a single 9800GTX than the dual 9800GT-s, since SLI is such a hassle, even more so on a notebook for driver related reasons, and if it dosen't work, the single GTX will be more powerful (and is plenty good for me).
Dual quad cores, that's not a bad idea :D

if the "one more thing" isn't the notebooks that we want really bad... whatever happened to the iPhone nano... i mean this is an iPod event and the iPhone is the best iPod apple has ever made right? There were always rumors of an iPhone nano and I remember the last one being made about it being ready for this holiday season. So, is this a possibility?

What would you expect such a phone to have? Whatever Apple would cut out of it people would complain it didn't have. Can you imagine typing on a smaller touchscreen? The iPhone is at a price point that there is no need for an iPhone nano.

you aren't thinking like apple... why does an iPhone nano have to be just an iPhone that is smaller and lacking features. The iPhone can just be simply a phone that is not in the smart phone category. I agree there really is no need for one... since the iPhone is the best phone on the market and I would never want to switch. But for some people who wants a nice, clean, futuristic, but very simple lamens phone that just makes calls, plays music, etc... but bears the apple logo... it would be perfect for them. I can totally see a very thin, clean, nano looking phone that makes calls, plays music, and has a screen just big enough to watch movies on... like our new nano that they are releasing. Sell it for 99$ and bam, you have all the non-smart phone junkies on the planet craving one.

What about SMS? The only way that would work is if Apple finally made it so you could have a landscape QWERTY in the SMS app. If you expect people to buy a fairly expensive phone and not have SMS, it would be a disaster.

I mean, I hate to really even bring this into the picture. But it's been a long-ass while since the MAC PRO line has seen a refresh... the last update was to the Harpertown architecture, and that was almost a year ago, or February rather as I recall. THe update was to 8-Core 2.8GHz, 3.0GHz, and 3.2GHz Xeon machines. Newer processors (ahem, Nehalem / Core i7) have come along and it's time for a major update.
People think that Apple sells few, and people buy few of the Mac Pro lineup, and that the demand is low, and this is not one of their flagship products. Rather, begging to differ, I think this is their bread and butter with their pro lineup that can run Leopard and pro apps, they need to keep the lineup refreshed. It's been too long, it's time for an update. Note: We have brand new iMacs, and the Penryn MacBook Pros, but the Mac Pros haven't been updated in quite a while.

Im not so sure about iphone Nano,
Take this quote for instance,
Luca Montezemelo (Head of Ferrari), "There will never be an entry level, or what you call a cheap Ferrari, cheap means less technology and that is not what we are about, pre-owned Ferrari's are our entry point."
Completely unrelated yet slightly relevant..
Just as an addition, the California costs more than an F430

Not at all relevant, seeing as most apple products are directed to the lowest common denominator, most apple products are crippled and have less tech than their competitors.

- Video Capture
- MMS Messaging
- Picture Messaging
- Blutooth File Transfer
Why would you want a smaller, cutdown iPhone with even less features?!

"But there is...one more thing."
After upgrading all the capacities of the other iPods on the 9th, Steve reminds everyone that there is one more iPod, the best iPod ever made, the iPhone 3G. After two months and 4 million sold, there's something that many still have been holding out for: an iPhone that can REPLACE their old iPod. Some have stuck with their old cell phone, purchasing an iPod Touch to get in on the App love. Some grabbed an iPhone, but still haul around they're classic for it's storage. 16GB doesn't cut it for a lot of people's music collection; 32GB is getting there for many. A 32GB model would be the first to come close to handling the functions of both a phone and iPod.
Backlash similar to the 2007 "too soon" price drop? No way, prices stay the same, simply an addition to the lineup with a $399 subsidized 32GB model. No one can complain. AND you've got the crowd that has to have the latest and greatest who'll ebay their brand new 16's and get the 32. That's how you sell 10 Million iPhones in a year.
Plus, a nice positive headline in the news for the world's most scrutinized phone.

Really, the main feature I want in iTunes 8 is performance and sound quality. I want it to be much more responsive (here's hoping to a cocoa re-write), especially now most people's libraries are getting quite huge.
There's alot of stuff to improve on in iTunes. It's still a pain in the ass to organize songs, and playlists are the only option. There's no color labelling for songs either. Imagine having a load of 2-hour long DJ sets on your computer, try about 250 - 300 of them, with your library totalling about 100GB of tunes to be conservative. Try finding a good way to organize these in the MAIN window (not in a bunch of playlists)...perhaps having contextual drop-downs to categorize these in the main window, the idea is seeing the tunes you want to see in the main window (ie library) -- organized the way you want....NOT seeing your whole raw slew of every sound file on your computer. This is just too annoying and it's time to fix this for good.

That was 8 months ago.
Newer processors (ahem, Nehalem / Core i7) have come along and it's time for a major update. They aren't here yet, but they will be soon.
They'll probably only refresh when the 16 cores come out... You'll most likely be waiting a long time.
2008 H1 - Harpertown - 4 (8) cores, 4 (8) threads
2008 H2 - Gainestown - 4 (8) cores, 8 (16) threads
2010 H1 - Westmere - 6 (12) cores, 12 (24) threads
2011 H1 - Sandy Bridge-EP - 6 (12) cores, 12 (24) threads
2012 H1 - Ivy Bridge-EP - ???

I don't think the tablet's coming in September, otherwise it would have been rumored very recently. Apple could just be keeping heavy wraps on it though.
Given that the notebooks may be updated in October, maybe the tablet is coming then. That would increase the likelihood of an Apple Event in October, as it would not be just to redesign two notebooks and update another.

Apple have had their fair share of problems regarding build quality in the last year or two.

I hope they don't switch to all touch computers. Seriously, for a lot of work that is done on a laptop, you need a real keyboard. If your a reporter, programmer, writer...you need a keyboard. Unless it is still the same macbooks with a touch screen on it, I think the mouse and keyboard are essential to a lot of work that is done on computers. It *might* be nice if all you did was browse the web and maybe email. But for anything more then that it would just get annoying.
Also...I think I could imagin Steve go something like(as they popup on the projector)...

a friend of mine let me know about what apple's strategy will look like for the transition to the (what you refer to as the) "touchbooks":
I have to say that, if true, this kind of scares me more then excites me.
If Apple wants to launch a new line of portable products to augment their existing MacBook and MacBook Pro line (I can see the MBA going away), that is fine.
But if they're going to replace the existing MacBook and MacBook Pro line with this new product, while it might play well with well-heeled retail consumers, I expect it will not play well with corporate and many "corporate professionals" (people who use Macs to make a living).

Help a brotha out. :cool:16 threads per Mac would come with the first Nehalems (4 cores/CPU, 8 threads/CPU, 2 CPUs/Mac).
On a side note, it looks like core count is doubling every 4 years or so. Future CPUs will get most of their speed from wide vector units. It'll be interesting to see how that plays out with the Mac (OS X).
I have to say that, if true, this kind of scares me more then excites me.

Same with the tablet-inside-an-iMac mockup.

I see new MacBooks in either September 16 or September 23 dates.
The more I read the more I agree.
I think the "Main Event" will be underwhelming for most folk. It'll be mostly iTunes, iPod and nothing else.
But I think we'll see a few bumps in spec across the general line-up across subsequent Tuesdays between now and New Years- iMacs, MacBooks and MBP's.
The Mini?
I think there'll be a major redesign and bump worthy of a big event next year, with that as the headliner.
The alleged Alu MacBook release? I dunno... that's a tricky kidney, no matter which way you slice it. Maybe we'll see spec bumps in the whole laptop line-up in the next 6 months and then a major event next year with MBA bumps, Alu MacBooks and a serious MBP revision. I'm not a betting man but I'd bet the major revisions and hardware bumps come before Snow Leopard so the whole line-up, desktops and laptops, are waiting for it.
But what do I know? :D
My advice? Don't buy anything just yet- you never know and don't get your hopes up for next week.

Thought I’d chime in with my predictions. My predictions have been overly aggressive in the past; this time I’ll try to be a little more realistic.
*The iPod nano depicted in tonight’s leaked photo is probably genuine. I’m expecting new capacities and the entry price to drop so that the iPod nano is better positioned with the iPod touch’s new prices.
8 GB: $99
16 GB: $199
*I'd wager that the leaked dimensions of the iPod touch are accurate. Now, why would the new iPod touch be slightly thicker? I don’t think larger capacities are the reason; a 64 GB iPod touch would be a little too pricy, in my opinion.
New features: GPS, speaker, two-megapixel camera
New prices
8 GB: $199
16 GB: $299
32 GB: $399
* I think the iPod classic will offer more storage for the dollar:
120 GB: $249
250 GB: $349
* I believe the rumors about iTunes 8 are mostly accurate, but known enough that I won’t belabor them.
Two other points:
1) I find it bizarre that the “whole” event’s itinerary has essentially leaked. Since I’m of the mind that Apple itself is behind most leaks, it seems odd that it would want to deflate the event...unless the leaks are distractions away from a more guarded unveil. I’m beginning to see the market for the long-rumored device like the iPod touch, but 1.5 times bigger, with a 720 x 480 display. It’s a long-shot, but Apple may want to capitalize on the popularity of netbooks, while “think[ing] different[ly].” A 1.5 times bigger iPod touch, with iWork mobile, will be able to handle the web surfing and light productivity that netbooks are mainly used for, with the graceful aplomb that only Apple can provide. Anyone unearth any new device codes in the iPhone OS 2.1 betas? ;)
2) What might this have to do with “Let’s Rock,” if anything? http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=495076 See #1?! Ugh, probably getting carried away again...heh.
Let me know what you think. Thanks....

Sep 6, 2008, 05:01 AM
Maniamac: overall I like your predictions, but I must say that I still do see the need for a camera in the iPod Touch? I agree that a 64G model is somewhat premature at this time, but such a beast should be release spring '09.
You didn't mention the Shuffle: I'd like to see a 4GB model - but I can't see Apple offering the 1 & 2GB models at a reduced price - imagine a 1GB Shuffle for, what, $29? That is what Apple charges for the earpiece set by itself.
About a totally new product: while I'd love to see something like that materialize during this event, but I doubt Apple will do it - at least not now. Since 2005 these September events revolved around the iPod (Nano) / iTunes releases. The only time when the event was used to pre-announce a product in a class by itself was 2 years ago when the company revealed the Apple TV (or iTV as it was called then). A new product that merges the Mac & iPod lines is simply too big to be announced in a press event mainly intended for music related products. And if there is going to be another Macbook(Pro) based event in a few weeks, I don't see Steve announce such a product, I say it could be a "one more thing" for the upcoming Macworld.
But this is only my opinion - in fact I'd love to be wrong :-D
Speaking of the portable Macs and the need to announce them during a special event; remember when the move to Intel was underway in 2006? The transition from iBook to Macbook took place without the need of a dedicated event. Earlier that year the Intel based Mini was revealed along with the iPod HiFi in what turned out to be an event that disappointed many observers.

I seriously believed that touch screen ipods were coming at that event, shame I was a year and a half early. And then, there wasnt even a 30th anniversary Mac. Not a good year.
So, what've we talked about today? Some really cool products, a new Mac mini that runs 5x faster... Front Row with Bonjour, update will go out later this week... iPod cases, they're really, really nice. And, of course, the new iPod Hi-Fi."

Since I’m of the mind that Apple itself is behind most leaks, it seems odd that it would want to deflate the event...unless the leaks are distractions away from a more guarded unveil. It's possible that Apple has done so. They purposely let the aluminum keyboard pictures "get away" and also had fake iPhone prototypes.

Add multitasking (even if only 1 app is visible at once) and iLife mobile, and you get a nice little device with multi-touch and without the hardware-intensive Mac OS X.
Anyone unearth any new device codes in the iPhone OS 2.1 betas? ;)Or in the SDK? (http://mikecane2008.wordpress.com/2008/07/26/youre-all-wrong-its-the-ipod-air/)But if any of you are expecting the iPod Air to be leaked, don’t hold your breath. Apple just extended the NDA on the iPhone OS SDK. That means any developer who leaks about upcoming device resolution independence features — the key point that would reveal an iPod Air — will be toast. But I'm expecting this device at MWSF 2009 or so, and if so, we'll start hearing some good rumors in Q4 2008.

I find it bizarre that the “whole” event’s itinerary has essentially leaked.
It would not be the first time. 9to5 Mac broke the last iPod Nano weeks before it's formal release at "The Beat Goes On" event last September. Heck, I think we knew most of that one before it happened, as well (larger HDD iPods, new iPod interface software, etc.).
And yet, Steve didn't show us anything we did not expect as a "One More Thing" at that event, so I remain skeptical he will do so at this one.

I'd wager that the leaked dimensions of the iPod touch are accurate. Now, why would the new iPod touch be slightly thicker? I don’t think larger capacities are the reason; a 64 GB iPod touch would be a little too pricy, in my opinion.
New features: GPS, speaker, two-megapixel camera
New prices
8 GB: $199
16 GB: $299
32 GB: $399
I'd say probably $149, $249, & $349, mainly for the reasons Kevin Rose said, to "distance itself from the iPhone".
I think the iPod classic will offer more storage for the dollar:
120 GB: $249
250 GB: $349
Always the optimists, y'all. You've obviously never had 2 hard disk-based iPods crap out on you or give you any trouble whatsoever. HD-based iPods are HISTORY. GET OVER IT!!

Other than the "iPod 2,1" in the SDK, I dunno. I'm pretty sure the "iPod 2,1" isn't the new iPod Touch, it's an iPod netbook. Using iWork & iLife when you're not at your computer means you can bring your iPodBook wherever you go (even to class to take notes!!! :D)
It's possible that Apple has done so.
Nah, I can't say it's "possible". It's INEVITABLE Apple did this to hide another product.

The only time when the event was used to pre-announce a product in a class by itself was 2 years ago when the company revealed the Apple TV (or iTV as it was called then). That's why I thought that a tablet or mini-tablet could be announced at next week's event.
I'd say probably $149, $249, & $349, mainly for the reasons Kevin Rose said, to "distance itself from the iPhone".$150 price drops? I find it hard to believe that.
Other than the "iPod 2,1" in the SDK, I dunno. I'm pretty sure the "iPod 2,1" isn't the new iPod Touch, it's an iPod netbook. I'm pretty sure it is, at least given Mac identifiers. The current MacBook Pros which were released in June (http://www.macrumors.com/2007/06/05/apple-releases-new-macbook-pros-with-santa-rosa/) carry a system identifier label of "MacBookPro3,1". One reader notes that an application called MiniBatteryLogger (http://www.emeraldion.it/software/macosx/minibatterylogger.html) provides public battery tracking logs, and recently revealed (http://burgos.emeraldion.it/mbl/entry/5cba8768214db05dd629188bd1ded708) an entry with an identifier of "MacBookPro4,1". "MacBookPro4,1" is presumably the identifier for the unreleased MacBook Pro revisions. …both minor updates. The iPhone went from 1,1 to 1,2 with 3G and GPS, which tells me that the second digit is the major change, while the first digit is the minor change.
Using iWork & iLife when you're not at your computer means you can bring your iPodBook wherever you go (even to class to take notes!!! :D)That is precisely why I want one. To create and edit documents and media as well as just playing them.

It could be, although I'd believe an iPod netbook would be announced like that.
$150 price drops? I find it hard to believe that.
I find it hard to believe that Apple actually would WANT to price the iPod Touch at THE SAME PRICE as the subsidized iPhone 3G. So, if AAPL wishes to distance the iPod Touch from the iPhone, price it differently, don't make them both the same price!

No, I'm guessing the 1,1 to 1,2 change for the iPhone was a minor one, given that Apple only added 3G & GPS, while everything else remained the same (even the CAMERA remained the same). The iPod 1,1 to 2,1 is more than just a minor hardware revision IMHO because Apple needs to really distance the iPod Touch from the iPhone without cannibalizing too horribly the iPhone sales. I'm guessing this means a completely different network provider for mobile broadband in the States (I vote for Sprint), maybe a way for iPod Touch 2.0s to be turned into prepaid iPhones, and maybe adding PDF support for eBooks.
That is precisely why I want one. To create and edit documents and media as well as just playing them.
Yeah, I would too. That way, I wouldn't have to lug my BlackBook around just so I could take notes during class, or maybe edit a movie I shot, or maybe draw a diagram that I saw in class, or maybe even listen to a particular song, watch a TV show or movie, maybe listen to an audiobook.
Apple, the market is there for the taking. Fire away! *standing firm*

No - see Mac identifiers in the post I quoted. If the iPod touch was to get a large update as you're saying, we'd have heard rumors about it by now...

and maybe adding PDF support for eBooks.I'd say that would come with the mini-tablet.

I just have a quick question about Apple's release policies: given a product announcement on the 9th, when are those products in stores/online? I ask as I've heard that, though this announcement is likely only iTunes/iPod related, that the laptop announcement may come the 16th. I can wait that long, but I leave for school the 18th, so if it won't be in stores by then I'm screwed and should just by one now.

New products should be in stores right after Apple announces them. But I wouldn't put too much hope on the 16th for new laptops. Apple got burned making releases too close together with MobileMe and the new iPhone; it isn't likely to attempt that again.

The difference is that MobileMe is a service rather than one product; that and iPhone 3G are probably bigger releases than the notebooks etc. Apple could cope better with new iPods and new notebooks being released at the same time, I should imagine.
I'm not arguing, you may be right! I hope they are released sometime around the 16th, however I wouldn't be too surprised either way.
I personally am waiting a while before buying my first MacBook Pro, even if I'm relying on my iPhone and a pen and paper for the first couple of weeks of uni. While I don't need the latest and greatest in every respect, if there is even a small chance that there will be a BTO option for quad core on the 17" it is worth the wait, just in case. If not, then I'll appreciate my buy that bit more after waiting!
Maybe one of the announcements will be a major change to MobileMe, even just that all the features will be put right and reliability will be as it should be. They added that 60 day extension or however long it was (one day after I bought mobileme, what timing!) so maybe they've been working up to one announcement that finally they've corrected it! Or maybe not. We'll soon know!
Oh my days, I have never before written this long a post on here... I'm so tempted to delete it all and not send it, in shame :|

Well, it turns out that the "Sept 9 event" was all a hoax, some people got some really good laughs from all the speculation. That was cruel.
Edit: don't you realize, we had zero concrete evidence for such a thing all along, zero press release, zero word from Apple. The "graphic banner invitation"...Photoshopped.

exactly. It's only an illusion. You are not typing on any site at all, you see. Just a set of lettered buttons on a device in front of you called a keyboard.
When you post your "text" to the server by hitting "submit reply" -- these bits of ASCII information are handled by a script and added to a database which is retrieved when you load the forum for the exact post to display, which is loaded by your browser and displayed as shades of blackened pixels on your display.
So you are seeing an absence of light, it's nothing at all. Fake. very fake indeed.
