Engadget confirms (http://www.engadget.com/2008/09/02/apple-event-for-next-tuesday-the-9th/) that there is an Apple media event for September 9th as rumored.

Apple is expected to release new iPod nanos and a new iPod Touch. While Macbook and MacBook Pro updates are also in the pipeline, we have heard suggestions that those will not see updates until at least October.

Bring it on! This would indicate an iPod / iTunes related event for the Tuesday the 9th and thus opens the door to a Mac event at a later date.

The Back-to-School promotion ends on Monday September 15, 2008 and as many on these forums know, Apple has a tendency to release Mac updates on Tuesdays (it's not absolute but heavily favored over other days).

You'd have to wait for a later event probably. Rumours were there'd be another event a week after, so you'd have to wait until next week to find out.

Now let the various interpretations / speculations begin: what does Apple actually refer to with the "Let's Rock" in the invitation? Aren't we rocking already with the current iTunes store and various iPods?? What about the longish looking iPod the figure in the picture is holding? Why 5 stars? And what exactly is the significance of the progress bar? Is that picture displayed on an iMac - or is it a new cinema display?? Etc... :D

Personally, I CAN'T WAIT!!! :p

While Macbook and MacBook Pro updates are also in the pipeline, we have heard suggestions that those will not see updates until at least October.
I think it is farily obvious that this is the case. The banner suggests an iPod-related event.

They're hardly going to spend a lot of time showing minor case revisions to the Touch and nano, then "by the way here's a radically redesigned new MacBook and MacBook Pro that's 5 times faster" :D

Sep 2, 2008, 01:01 PM
If this is the actual invitation, I wonder about the rounded corners. Neither my Nano 3g nor my iphone have rounded corners in their ipods.

Hope a "round" new ipod nano doesnt have round screen corners as major new feature.

Am not sure what to make of "Let's Rock", but if you connect rock with independence and freedom this leads me to some form of iTunes Unlimited.

Are there any indications for an expansion of the iTunes movie rentals to be more international. At the moment germany and other european countrys are not really covered. Not to speak of the rest of the world.

Anyways looking forward to the event

Sep 2, 2008, 01:04 PM
I suspect this is iTunes 8.0 (which must be driving the need for an event) coupled with relatively minor updates to the Touch and Nano.

The new Intel quad-core mobile chips are set for production release in October. If so, I just hope the battery life isn't awful. While I'm tempted to gripe, if they took longer on the redesign and release a higher quality 1.0 product, it'll be worth it. If it's delayed just because they wanted to release a toy first, well, it would just continue the trend away from the Mac as a core product.

The real key will be if 10.5.5 shows new MB and MBP identifiers. Then we'll at least know we're close.

Death by a thousand Tuesdays :-)

It says there is a possibility of a seperate October event most likely for macbooks. It was a general assumption that they would go against their norm and have a combined ipod and macbook event. It looks like they are not going to do that and will indeed have seperate events.

I can't believe it! That's what one of the Apple Store employees said about the release of the new macbook, back in July!
you apple store acknowledges rummers?
i made the slightest comment about a 3G iphone in may and was told there was "ABSOLUTELY NO 3G IPHONE scheduled to be announced at WWDC" and that rummer sights like this one are totally incredible.i just kinda laughed at the guy and decided not to argue with him. anyway the ipod interface in the pic doesn't look like the one in current ipods so that should be taken note of and this will probably mark the launch of iTunes 8.0 which i am relay excited about. also i think kev Rose said something about Bluray support so that could be what the blue bar is supposed to symbolize. although i think that's just reading too much into it. since itunes dose HD movies though it could realistically be the default Bluray burning app although i think it will belong time before we see them in anything outside mac pros

If the interface is so different, it would be nice to see Apple throw a bone to those of us with 5G iPods while also updated their SSD iPods. I'm in for a Touch no matter what, but spicing up the 5G would be a great bonus.

So what's everybody's odds on new Macbooks/Macbook Pros/Airs, etc. etc.?

The iPod/iTunes update seems pretty obvious. I'm curious to see the over under on updates to other stuff being at least announced if not released.

Personally I think an announcement of Macbook/Pro/Air updates, and a release in 5-6 weeks once the "Back to School" promotion has passed and those purchasers are past the return period.

If they are significantly new notebooks, they WILL have a press event- why wouldn't they? Apple gets tons of free coverage and publicity at these events, they are the best bang-for-buck marketing in high tech.

They'll do another press event when the new notebooks are ready. It may or may not be within 2 weeks of September 9, but they don't want to wait too long either before Q4 shopping season kicks off.

If its a big enough release, it would need to be held at a place that can hold more than 50+ people. I'm not positive, but i think when they released the iPod Hi-Fi, they could only fit a small amount of people in Apple's Campus Hall/Room. Though I'm sure they have bigger rooms.

Remember in 2005 when they released the original nano in September (along with the ill-fated ROKR) and 5 weeks later released the 5th gen iPod? At the October event they also announced the last iMac G5 (also the first mac w/ built in iSight and remote).

Last year they had a Mac-centric event in I believe August, and an iPod-centric in September. My guess is same this year, but Mac in October.

What I was trying to say is that I seriously doubt they'll two events within 2 weeks of each other - I don't think that's ever happened. I think Apple knows well enough that if they have events for everything the public isn't going to be as excited about it. Gotta get that demand pent up for a bit. If they do have a separate event I'd bet it'd be, at the earliest, the 30th of September but more likely the 7th or 14th of October.

Maybe the new iPod Nano will be made of ROCK! SWEET!

Or maybe it's referring to the shape of the new Nano (how it's oval shaped) and when you set it down, it can literally rock on the table!

The MacBook originally launched without a press event, and went straight to the online store.
It's not going to have anything majorly different, other than a case redesign and spec upgrades. I can easily see this one just appearing on the store.

However, for the Pro, im expecting some cutting edge technology (touch screen trackpad?) which will need to get some mass media coverage, and on all the tech blogs etc. I can see the MacBook Pro revision requiring a press event really. Industry professionals are more likely to keep track of the tech blogs and media events than the consumers who just walk into the Apple stores and pick up an iMac, MacBook, or iPod.

No... the word "Let's" is a contraction of "Let Us"... so it actually says "Let Us Rock".

a tad disappointed there will probably be no laptop updates at this event. who even cares about the ipods anymore? this better be big, and i think it will be. apple will probably put the spark back into the ipod at the event because they have really been focused on other aspects. looking forward to the event and a possible future event when the new macbooks and macbook pros come out.

While on vacation a couple of weeks ago, in Napa CA, we were in our hotel room looking up wineries to visit on my MacBook Pro, a poof of smoke came out of the left side of the keyboard, and the monitor went dead. I can still sync the iPhone with it, so when I get a new laptop, I should be able to use it as a target disc to load my info on to the new laptop. I'm struggling with whether I should wait for a new MBP, or just get the one out now. As an interim, I'm using a G4 PowerBook. It's really painful to go technologically backwards. I'll probably just suck it up and wait until October.

Personally I think an announcement of Macbook/Pro/Air updates, and a release in 5-6 weeks once the "Back to School" promotion has passed and those purchasers are past the return period.

iPod/iTunes only. Period.

Though it's unlikely, I'd speculate that it wouldn't be that unusual for Apple to spend 45 minutes talking about the new iPod nano form factor, the adjustments to the iPod Touch to make it look more like the iPhone and then do a "One More Thing" with the new form factors for the macbook and macbook pro.

Or at least, that's what I'm hoping for.

Also, one thing is probably a guarantee: Steve Jobs will probably make the entire presentation by himself (except perhaps for a corporate guest) to prove that he's healthy to the terrified investors out there.

I wonder if any of the design details are clues about the interface of iTunes 8.

I have a feeling that iTunes 8 is going to be the big deal here. The Nano just isn't worthy of an event. iTunes will be, and perhaps how it works with the phone and Touch as well as we should see 2.1 rolled out on that day.

There may be some surprises with Quicktime 8 too, and personally I am hoping for a touch-remote for iTunes that doesn't cost a bomb. We don't need a bunch of GBs of memory for such a device.

How does Apple currently plug the nano?

"It’s the small iPod with one very big idea: video. Now the world’s most popular music player lets you enjoy TV shows, music videos, video podcasts and more. iPod nano’s larger, brighter display means amazing picture quality. In six eye-catching colours, it’s stunning all around. And with 4GB and 8GB models starting at just £99, little speaks volumes. Learn more

Watch up to 5 hours of TV shows, music videos and podcasts.
Brighter Display
iPod nano sports a larger, 320-by-240 resolution display that’s 65% brighter than before.
Browse your music by album artwork with Cover Flow. View everything on your iPod nano in a whole new way.
In anodised aluminium and polished stainless steel, iPod nano is 6.5 mm thin and even more beautiful."

Could they bring the resolution up, with a bigger screen, and as the volume is bigger, bump to 16GB? OLED?

Last year, a few people were able to go to their Apple stores and pick up a new iPod Classic the day of the event. Alot of stores didn't get the new iPods on the event day and it took a few days to get them.

Alright, thanks. I'll make sure to call in ahead of time :3

What do you know!

Jobs actually left ALL those clues to this date in his iPhone/iPod adds for over a year. That IS evil. So evil he left clues in broad public, just so the good guys could track his evil plans and stop him....

Prepare for bloated soliloquy on September 9th as he gloats about his evil plans for world domination.

Just announce the macbook updates already! I've been waiting partly because I don't want a white laptop. It looks "girly" to me and shows the dirt. I can't afford the black....I'm hoping for a price drop and, of course, upgrades. It's getting to where I'm getting frustrated and will have to consider my options. I'll see what the 9th brings...

Apple can still get some back to schoolers, like me, who are on the fence (between Apple and competitor), if they act soon. Why announce in October when the school buying season is over, and some people went to Dell thinking it was newer and there were color choices?? (yes, color is irrelevant to alot of you , but to a young college kid it can matter) I"m getting impatient here!!

I am gonna be on vacation, so away from the Interworld as well...this event is gonna put the LAST nail in Microsoft's coffin for the Zune, with amazing new iPods that will redefine the genre once more...

i hope they update the iPod classic along with the Nano. I sometimes hate that the Nano gets more popularity than the Classic, even though the Nano has better sales, i'd never buy a Nano and the features of the Classic are most important to me.

better yet, find a way to make the Touch the new iPod Classic and have a Touch with 80gigs of hard drive space for 199.. THAT would be what i want most.

How does Apple usually do this?

I want to buy the new iPod touch, as soon as possible :D

Aaaaaaand another one. It could be said that everybody has laptops, too. I have two.

I just don't get this. Do you want a laptop or not? If so, buy one and stop blaming Apple because your plan is so dumb.

I don't particularly want to buy a laptop and find its out of date in two weeks after release date especially as most of us consider this to be a fairly major revision. People can afford to update their iPod every time a new release comes out, a laptop costing £££ is more of a 3 year upgrade.

Surely the biggest market for a Macbook is the student market, thus why they should release it in time for University/College/School starting, which around the world is in September.

I bought a 15gb ipod (antique model :p) back in 2004, never upgraded. Yeah, the new ones look nice, but my old antique still plays good, by fm transmitter doc still works. It may have a few (ok a bunch) scratches, but does the job. My Wife's nano is a 2gb from a few years ago also (only holds 300 songs). She is fine with her's.

@ EVERYBODY demanding new laptops
Just because you want new MB/MBPs does not mean there will be. You are not entitled to one just because you want one. Apple goes at their own pace, with their own product schedules, that do not revolve around you. Be happy with the iPod updates, and then wait for the laptop updates. Stop filing threads up with your pointless complaints.

My recollections are there is a new iTunes coming, a redesigned iPod nano, and a modest upgrade for the iPod Touch.

Hardly enough for an event. Me thinks there is more to the event than we are hearing/seeing. What could it/they be?

Exclusive artists or labels? New ways to use iPods? Applications? A new line of iPods? Price changes? Partnerships with developers? A major change in distribution of iPods or music/movies?

Your not alone. I've been waiting since mid last year.

um... apple's laptops have seen numerous revisions since then. You could've been enjoying a macbook for a year+ by now.

Is it just me...or does no one give a **** about new iPods this year? Everyone seems to want their new notebooks! I don't want to rock...I want my new MacBook Pro.

It's not just you, but it is largely just the people on this site. The ipod is apple's signature product at this point (with the iphone not far behind). The release of new ipods is national news - the release of updated laptops is highly relevant to a very small group of people.

Time to take the damn bloat out and revert itunes to a music manager rather then an isync/ical/movies/music/julian fry maker.

Don't count on it. As SJ has said, once you put features in to something you really can't take them out. No way, no how does itunes revert to what it was several generations ago - nor should it. Not only does it do everything but make julian fries now, it does it all *well,* so there's really no reason to scale it back.

Not if you want real phone service. I'll stick w. Verizon and get a touch, thank you very much.:p

Having had both, I can tell you VZN is no better than AT&T. Basically the same coverage and rate of dropped calls, with each doing a little better than the other in certain places.

Why doesn't anyone care? ipod's and iphone's get released every year it seems like. Macbook, Macbook pro, mini have not had a real (other than speed bumps) update in a few years. Imac just got their update last summer.

I'm sorry but that's not true, I've considered a iPhone 3G, but I like my $40 a month cheap phone if I could get the same features in an iPod touch I would NEVER consider an iPhone, and remember they have a goal to reach on selling iPhones, no goal on how many iPod touches to sell

I know what you mean. I'm the computer tech at an elementary school and over the summer, we overhauled a lot of our network infrastructure (totally new wireless, a few new switches, created some VLANs, and erased & rebuilt our servers from scratch) and other behind the scenes things. However, there are a few teachers who think we didn't do anything b/c they only register that things have changed if there's a big visual difference, like new computers. If they can't see the change, they don't think it happened.

Actually I think you misunderstand, why would I buy an iPhone if i can have a phone just for phone calls for $40 a month and an iPod touch that can do everything an iPhone can 'cept the phone calls and spend less overall. Not to mention if they were to have the same amount of memory they would have to A) drop the amount of memory in the iPod touch cause that much will not fit in the iPhone as is or B) make the iPhone bigger to fit the same amount of memory in the iPhone as the iPod touch. And I don't know about this so I don't want to assume you were meaning this as well so I will ask, are you also talking about 3g, GPS, and a camera in the iPod touch?

iPhone 32GB $399 (subsidized).

iPod Touch 32GB $299
iPod Touch 64GB $399
(8GB & 16GB models are discontinued)

iPod Classic 120 $249
iPod Classic 240 $349

iTunes 8.

And the biggie:
The return of NBC to the iTunes store.

I think this is very close. The only thing I would change is that the iPod Touch sizes stay the same but prices fall to $199 and $299.

I have a feeling this is going to be a iTunes only update...

It didn't make sense apple to do a update to their MB's that close to the end of school promo. By Sept 15th most students have already purchased their computers.

I hope that Apple REALY has a very very very good update for their laptops. Its about time.

Please, a third USB port and dedicated graphics on a 1400$ computer would be nice. Time for Apple to catch up hardware wise with their computers.

Wow, don't head any companies anytime soon...

Last I checked we were the consumers. :)

True. In July I bought a HP laptop for just under $900 with a 320GB HD, 4GB ram and dedicated video, plus 3 USB ports, card reader and S Video output.

I sold my MB and MBP last week.

Actually I think you misunderstand, why would I buy an iPhone if i can have a phone just for phone calls for $40 a month and an iPod touch that can do everything an iPhone can 'cept the phone calls and spend less overall.

Except that the iPod Touch cannot browse unless you are at a wifi hotspot whereas the iPhone can browse anywhere with a cell signal. The GPS has been WAY handy as of late too. :)
