Is it even possible with only a software update? The way Flash treats OS X (and, as we all know, the iPhone runs OS X), we'll have iPhone overheating, terrible frame rates, poor support by Adobe, and so on and so forth.
Unless Flash becomes actually reasonable on OS X, I see no reason it should be on the iPhone. Apple's got enough problems with the iPhone. And the way a FLash video heats up my Macbook, Apple would have a big problem on its hands.

I hope Flash never comes to the iPhone.
Why?
If anything I wish their was a 3rd-party app that you could download from the app store, maybe a big red F in a box like Adobe's Flash Pro. And you can open it and type in URLs and it would play flash content. That way the main Safari app could browse flash-less and needs no interference from Apple. Heck, if Apple lets people share code (GPL requirement) then we don't even need Adobe - just get Gnash on there.

What do you think of Gnash? I thought about putting it on my Eee in Ubuntu, and everyone in the Linux world I asked said it wasn't a good idea and to stick with the real Flash 10....
The separate flash player idea isn't bad... although cut and paste or some mechanism to launch a flash applet that is not being played in Safari into the Flash player would be important. Honestly, I haven't missed Flash all that much on my iPhone, though.

Flash ads would be horribly distracting and probably eat battery life.
Maybe if you could opt to do it for some video wrappers. Coders can use the challenge anyways.

Why?
Have you every browsed the web with those annoying flash ads? Ever notice your fan speed go up with a page with multiple ads on a page? Now imagine the effect it would have on battery life of a iPhone.

The pros of having flash would outweigh the cons by a mile. being able to watch video content from bbc,cnn amd thousand of other websites instead of only youtube would be awesome.

Adobe states that they *want* to bring flash to the iphone. I do think its coming -- but soon? I don't think so. So many people are having trouble with the current features on their iphones that I think those problems will be addressed first.

By a MILE? Not so fast there ....
For me (and maybe the majority of users), unless there's a adblock app available, I don't want flash on my iPhone.
CNN Videos? Sorry man ... can't say I've ever needed that "on-the-go".
While I welcome as many streaming video options as possible, I won't take blinking ridiculous ads on my web pages to get 'em.

Just from this board alone, most people want it. Plus it would make the iphone interent experience closer to the full internet experience. If I have to put up with ads to get more content (thousands more) then I will.

I think it would be great if safari comes with flash blocker (just like Firefox add-on) that way users can pick and choose which flash to activate. Voila~ problem solved.:D

Personally, I have zero need for Flash enabled webpages in Safari, but a Flash video plugin for Safari would be ideal. It should work in exactly the same way as YouTube links work - They should simply launch the player, and away you go.

I'd love it just to load up slacker.com until they get an app to the appstore (if ever). Other than that, I haven't found a real need for it. I wouldn't mind it, but I'm not sorely missing it. I certainly don't want to waste battery on stupid ads anyway.

That was Adobe's plan when they said they had it running on the simulator.
I think the last we heard of Flash was that it was running on the simulator.
I'm sure Adobe's trying to get Apple to do something with Flash similar to YouTube...Any page with Flash on it will have a still image and maybe an "f" overlay. Tap that, it launches Flash Player...though what if you don't have it...or maybe even easier...put Flash Player with Safari...then update the firmware...this way, it's like YouTube videos...don't even need to launch the youtube application to play.
And that makes more sense, since a standalone flash player isn't of much use to the majority of people (unlike the standalone YouTube).
I don't care about Flash on the iPhone...I just wish Apple would add a comments button in the YouTube Video details.

The problem with even a Flash "app" is ... the lack of a mouse!
How are you supposed to do mouse-overs? Hover states? Click and drag event (without dragging the whole page)? and so on?

You do realize that 7-11 was founded in Texas?
------------
On Topic;
It is unlikely that we will get Flash, since AJAX is quickly replacing Flash on the web. Any other uses can be achieved via an App or by utilized with legitimate video formats.

No, most people don't want it. This topic does not constitute a balanced sample of end users on which to guess a result.

If there is an option to turn flash on or off then why not want it? I don't care about it either way but I am not spiteful enough to wish it will never happen just because I don't need it.

iPlayer works on the iPhone because they link to progressive download H264 .mov files when their servers can sniff an iPhone user agent. All other files on the BBC website are of the streaming variety, and require plugins to work, which is why they don't work on the iPhone.
I don't see how anyone can argue that "most people don't want it", Trip.Tucker. Virtually everyone I have spoken to about the iPhone says that the absence of Flash is an annoyance.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_0_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5C1 Safari/525.20)
I think that in the future we will have flash.

Channel 4 on Demand... and ITV does show some of it's content online... Wish they'd get with the program and actually go H.264 and open up a little.
Flash? No chance.

The main reason I want Flash enabled on the iPhone is so I can watch South Park (http://www.southparkstudios.com/). :D
