View Full Version : My new iPod Touch fell and broke..... WTF?

Guys, I bough a new 16gb ipod touch a couple of weeks ago, and today at the gym while doing bench press is slid out of my pocket and broke. I'm a bit mad because the quality of this ipod is a POS, I had a Speck Armor case and the fall was from 2 FEET !! and the floor had a thick rubber protection for when the weights fall in the floor.
So I mean, this ipod should be sturdier man! MY friend's iPhone fell from his hands (5 feets fall!) to a cement floor and the iphone is still working like a champ, other than a few dents, oh and by the way, it had NO case.
Since the ipod T. is only a few weeks old (2 weeks at max.) I can get a new one without paying a dime right?
I'm in Spain and I got this ipod from u.S. amazon, what's the procedure here? where should I send the ipod, who should I write to? etc etc? I've never asked for an apple replacement product ever.
What should I do?
here are some pics:

there is no way that damage happened from 2 feet, especially if you had a proper case. you've stepped on that or something
Your carpets need cleaning too.

OUCH! Man that sucks!
what's with the scratches on the face? and what caused that big crease on the back side?
I don't know if you'll be able to talk amazon or apple in to taking it back, unless you can convince them that the damage is a 'manufacturing defect'
good luck!

Not that I am doubting you, but the story and the picture are not concordant.
Edit: ok maybe I am doubting....

Guys, I bough a new 16gb ipod touch a couple of weeks ago, and today at the gym while doing bench press is slid out of my pocket and broke.
If you dropped it, why would Apple replace it?
As for the damage, it all depends on the angle of the fall. Take the Palm Pilot. I launched one of those getting out of my car by accident. It flew a good 25 feet. It landed flat and other than scuff marks from the concrete, it worked fine. My friend on the other hand, had a newer model, set it on the bathtub rim and it fell off into the bath tub on it's edge. Totally destroyed the screen.
So just because it dropped 2 feet, there are more variables than just the drop. The speed, angle, surface material, etc. all play a role in the outcome.
BTW, gut feeling tells me that this was dropped more than 2 feet or something else happened.

I agree, no way that happened from a 2 foot drop.

Looks more like you crushed it in your pocket and bent it under the weight of your bench press, then it fell out. I can't imagine it bending like that from a 2 foot fall. I'm sure if your friend first tried to bend his iPhone in half before his 5 foot fall it wouldn't have faired as well either. :)

well dudes, I have no need to lie.... I had two 75lbs dumbells on me when it fell, I pick the ipod from the floor 20 sec. after it fell, now that you guys say that it looks like some weight was put to it, I'm getting even madder because MAYBE someone ****ing stepped on the thing while I finished my set. There were very few people on the gym, that's why I didn't stop right away and picked it up.
Jesus man.....this means I have NO option? apple won't do **** for this?
I'm an honest man.....the ipod has TWO weeks, there are no scratches, the pic came out weird, maybe it was the dust, or the fall/stepping (I get madder the more I think about it!)

You have no option! Unless you can find the person who stepped on it! Either way the damage was inflicted by the user.

Yeah, unfortunately Apple isn't going to replace it since it has clearly been crushed/bent. Maybe if it dropped and had no visible damage you'd have a case, but.... no such luck.

apple is not responsible for someone stepping on your ipod - they have no obligation to replace it.
Sorry. can you claim on household insurance?

It looks like someone stepped on it. No doubt.
I can see how that would happen. iPod on touch floor around really heavy people equals disaster.
But hey, look on the bright side.. It broke JUST in time for the NEW iPod touch coming out on the ninth. Save your pennies. :D

That's a good point. Some insurance companies will pay for damage like this depending on your policy.

One of my friends wonders why I won't lift with an iPod touch or iPhone...I think i'll send him this thread.
I don't even think stepping on it could cause that damage. Plus if it fell out of your pocket it would have fallen next to the bench, not far enough away for someone to step on it without you noticing them.
I think it fell out of the pocket and then the dumbbell landed on it after the set.
Pick up a refurb nano or shuffle to work out with...much cheaper to replace.

Jesus.... this sucks. Thanks a lot anyways guys.
I guess I'll have to buy a new one.
I had a 2gen nano that got stolen like a months ago (that's why I got the touch) thank good the company I work for payed for the touch since the nano got stole while doing a jog for the company. I though I had won the lottery, but....I'm ****ed.

Don't be an idiot and you won't break your stuff. If the guy is going rock climbing or wrestling bears, sure, don't bring it becuase you can fall, get mauled, eaten, etc... But if you are just working out like a normal person and aren't having an epileptic seazure while doing so, you should be fine. Just my two cents.
Your friend is probably just a smart, cautious person, like me. :D

The crease in the back still doesn't look like someone stepped on it.
I'm someone that's dropped my iPod touch, without a case, onto a concrete floor from about a metre height and didn't get so much as a scratch (though it was due to be replaced because of a hardware defect since I got it :p). I'm not saying you're not telling the truth, I'm just saying from my own personal experience something really, incredibly bad must have happened to that iPod; more than someone merely stepping on it.

Buck up and take some personal responsibility. That's no manufacturing defect, etc--the thing is bent. It is in no way Apple's fault; why would you expect a freebie from them?

 You waited 20 seconds to pick it up! By that time I would've picked it up, kissed its cuts and scratches and promised to by it a few more cases and screen protectors just to make it feel better. You just better hope it won't resent you for the rest of its life!

There's no way you possibly believed your own story on this one. No reasonable person would have believed that damaged was caused by a short fall onto a relatively soft surface, especially in a case.
The touch is actually built pretty well, as long as you don't torque/twist it, which can cause the glass to break. I don't use a case (well, I keep it in an Apple iPod sock most of the time) and last night I heard a clatter. I went to investigate and my wife's POS cat batted my iPod off my desk. No case. 3 or 4 feet (standard desktop height) onto a hardwood floor. Not a scratch, dent or ding.
That thing was crushed. I'm betting you dropped a weight on it, either while it was on the floor or while it was on your pocket and you just don't want to admit it.

Am I the only one who thinks he completely contradicted himself in that quote? The whole 20 sec and "that's why I didn't pick it right up". Honestly, in a 20 second time span how do you NOT notice someone step on it!
Face it man, you dropped the weight on it or something and made up a TERRIBLE story to cover yourself. Apple won't fix this, and as mean as I hate to be, I sure hope they don't because that wasn't a wise choice to bring your Touch to the Gym.
This thread should get locked, not to stop your story, but to stop people from obviously pointing out your EPIC FAIL!!!
I don't want to be mean, but I LOVE being honest!

guys he admitted he lied, at least he was fessing up to it ( i cannot say the same about the shady people in the iPhone forum)
anyways that looks like a weight was dropped on it ( possible at a 45 degree angle based on the crushed line )
Unfortunately apple will not cover this damage
My 11 day old iPhone was dropped by my friend, from a 3 foot drop... we're still friends but Im out 200 for a replacement iPHone.

From the serial number on the back, it looks like a week 30 (9?C830...) - so it was manufactured late July. Could have been sold in the last two weeks.

Man, I'm a little bit impressed by some (most) of the responces I got here. Everyone seems to be attacking/pointing the finger, even assuming I'm lying. Wow, honestly I know it's the internet and there are A LOT of liars, but seriously, it's really not cool to attack someone and asume they're lying just for the fun of it.
My story is straigh up the honest truth, I was bench presing, the ipod slid out of my pocket, fell to the floor, I couldn't look right away were it landed because of the 75lbs dumbells on both my arms. Now, it looks as if something landen on top of it, or as is someone stepped on it, I honestly don't know what tha **** happened, I didn't see/hear anyone stepping on it.
Now, you guys are saying I should admit I lied? who that **** are you guys? Apple Inc? you're all a bunch of guys/girls in a forum, I have nothing to gain from you, other that some help on what I should do. I even asked IF apple would replace it, I didn't ask what should I tell Apple to get it replaced? So come one man, I've hung out in the Macbook forum, the Photography forum, the Picture Gallery forum, and everyone has been more than helpful and respectful towards me, and I come here and post this to get some help, and I get a huge amount of disrespectful comments? I think some of you really need to be a little bit more mature and respectful towards other people.
AFTER you guys said that it didn't look like a fall break, It got me thinking and I tried to get an explanation (on what could have happened)....a step on, maybe the dumbells fell on it (I did threw the dumbells to the floor when I finished, but I threw them INFRONT of me, the ipod was on the side, so there's no way MY dumbells fell on the ipod....maybe someone else's again, I don't know.
It's ok, I'm not rich but I have the cash to buy another Touch....I don't need to milk Apple and try to get a replacement when it's not covered. As I said I haven't done this before.

well your original post said it fell and it looked like that and of course everyone called bs
anyone in their right mind would know that a fall would not make the ipod like that
we doubt you based on what you told us. thats all we have to go by, i mean do you magically expect us to know the details without you telling us? we have to go by what you wrote nothing more nothing less. so being respectful my a**, how bout you tell the whole story upfront the first go-around. i mean seriously, did you think that just a fall caused that? lol
either way, you cant get it replaced without paying

It definitely does look like something fell on it when it was at an angle by mistake or not! Dont get so angry.... if you would have cleared this up in the first post it self you would have got a lot of help!
But there's absolutely no way that Apple is going to replace it! You cant get a repair as well since absolutely nothing is intact.
So your best bet now is to WAIT for September 9th and get the new (and probably cheaper) iPod Touch! Its just 5 days from now!:)

That was my second post... as you can see I made it clear that I had no clue someone/something stepped/landed on the ipod, but it could be.
Now lets think a little and maybe put yourself in another man's shoes:
your ipod slips off your pocket, you don't SEE where it landed....you don't HEAR any crack sound, you finish what you were doing and you go pick up the ipod, NO ONE is near the ipod (at least the closest person is 5 feet or so away from it) what in the blue hell do you think happened to the thing? sorry my friend but to me, AT THE MOMENT, I though it was the fall, which if you read my first post I made it clear that I though it was supposed to be sturdier. MAybe I'm naive, or maybe I'm dumb, call me that..........but don't ****ing say I'm a liar without reading what I posted (on ALL my posts, not only the first one)
It's VERY easy to talk crap on a forum and be disrespectful, I just came here to ask for help man, not to be disrespected or be called a liar.

To me it looks like it possibly got trapped between the floor and a workout bench of some sort. I don't see how just stepping on it would crease it like that, but a square tube supporting a press bench or similar could do it. Just my thought.........
