How does the new offical Google app manage to search the contacts (ie outside its "sandbox"? And since it can why not let it be able to search notes/email etc as well?

Apple has some APIs that permit access "outside the sandbox", as it were. Contacts are one of those.

There's definitely API to have access to contact information as well as the changing of that information. I believe Apple was thinking of applications from Speed Dial to Birthday reminders to Social Networking, etc.

Now I wonder why there's no read-only API for the music library...certainly a lot safer compared to having full access to the contact information...and it would certainly help Tap Tap Revenge a ton.
