I'll probably end up using the loops to make cool soundtracks for my movies. And its cheaper than soundtrack so why not?

Once I get a MIDI-keyboard and a music notation package, I expect to be doing quite a bit with it.

My old non-MIDI synth is showing its age, and I'd rather relegate it to the "antique storage facility" (ie, closet) while it still works, and haul it out now and then to impress people (as I occasionally do with a few feet of orange Hot Wheels track).

Can't wait! I need to go to Radioshack and buy an instrument adapter. I decided to cancel the order for the one I placed with Apple--I'm sure Radioshack sells something equivalent for a fraction of the price.

yea new poll.

I'll admit I have no use for Garageband. I don't play any instraments, but I could mess with the premade tracks. The other tools in iLife will need to convince me it's worth buying.

not musician but I am really interested in using garage band for soundtracks for imovies and maybe for promotional videos or tv ads for my small company.
Sure it will be a lot of fun using it, cant wait to get it tomorrow.

I'm keen on trying it out. I'm a trumpet player, but I have no good mics, and I rather suspect the mic-jack on my aging powerbook is hooped :-( so I'm looking for a _good_ stereo USB mic (with as much dynamic range as I can get...trumpets can be both *very* loud and relatively quiet) that doesn't cost too much (I know...quality, price and availability: pick two). Any advice would be appreciated.

I also happen to have available to me (don't ask) a Roland Jupiter 8 synthesizer with MIDI I/O. I can't play keyboards for *****, but I might be able to hack together some loops if necessary. Should I be looking for a cable for this thing, and, if so, what kind of cable will I need, and where might I find it.

Cheers

I used to play the piano and have a usb midi adapter. I'll probably use it to score a soundtrack for a film that I'm working on. Do soundtrack and garageband use the same loops format? If not, why and what are the differences? I saw it at Macworld and it's easy to use; I was mixing music within 5 minutes. Go GarageBand!

I plan to try it out. I'm a drummer, so the software isn't really targeted at me, it's more for keyboard players and guitarists... but nonetheless I plan to give it a whirl. I have a Roland electronic drum setup with MIDI output, and I might borrow one of my father's numerous keyboards and start bashing out tunes in my basement.

Outside testing GB a few times, I am a born and raised Logic fanatic, so my time and heart belong there.

I voted no. Though my copy of iLife comes in tomorrow so I plan to play around with GB for a little bit though I really don't think I'll use it beyond that.

In case nobody more informed answers... I'd suggest looking at USB audio-in device (Griffin iMic? or that may too low-end) and then just plug in a regular analog mic you like.

For the keyboard, you need a MIDI interface (connects via USB). M-Audio seems popular: http://m-audio.com

Yea a new poll. I'm glad that I checked back this evening. :)

I voted with the majority, Yes, will play around with it now and again. Anxious to take at look at this program, looked great in the demo. Gives a non-musician a chance to make some decent music.

We're waiting to evaluate it as a compositional tool for out Mus tech lecturers and composers, i think it'll be an excellent addition to my mobile systems, perfect for laying those ideas down with a little more style.

GB Sounds interesting, I'm curious to see it if can be used to compliment Soundtrack. But I'm a video geek - not much of a musician.

I'm buying iLife mainly for iDVD 4

Although I would really like to try GarageBand, I voted "No" because Software Instruments won't work on a G3.
So I own a computer that's not even a year old (iBook G3, 900 Mhz), and I can't use all parts of Apple's new iLife-collection (aimed at consumer customers like me?). Great.

That is cool. Does garageband have an option to upload to your .mac account?

Is there a submission process to the ITMS. Wouldn't that be cool? People out there making there own music, mixing their own music and getting paid.

I voted no, although I will play around with it for a day or so when I first get it, but doubt much after that. Then again, if it really is easy and the included sound tracks/loops (I only play drums, and that was years ago) are good and easy to mess with, then who knows. I do know if it was a PC app I would never mess with it.

I think that you have articulated it well iJon. As Steve said this is life for the rest of us. Don't sell yourself short, you are probably doing better than you think. The pre-canned music already sounds great!

and for 50 bucks its a worth investment. i dont need garageband but i use the other apps ALL the time, garageband is just something that makes ilife that much better and im having a blast, who knows, this may be my chance to learn what i was suppose to in elementary class back in the day. we are soon ordering the keyboard for customers to test out. So watch out Neptunes, cause i have some tight a** beats comin, word ;)

I don't know if I'll even be getting the new iLife. I only use iTunes and iPhoto anyways, and I don't know if the new iPhoto is worth $49. I plan to go over to the Apple Store sometime this weekend and try it out.

I don't like the interface of GarageBand though. The black does not go well with the rest of the system. They should have made it either aqua or metal.

Off topic but, does anyone know if the iPod minis are displayed at the Apple Store yet? I'd like to see those too so I'm planning to go as soon as they have it.

When Steve Jobs was introducing GarageBand, I was willing to pay around $100 for such an application. But since it is being bundled with the other four applications, that works great for me. :) I don't have any use for iDVD or iMovie, but it's nice to have the other apps included anyways.

If all you want is iPhoto, I don't think it is worth $49. I tried it out briefly. It pretty much looks and acts like iPhoto 1 and 2. Nothing too drastic that I could tell. If iPhoto was made into a powerful consumer photo editing software, like Photoshop Elements, then it would be worth the $49.
