I'm seriously considering the purchase of an iBook, either new or refurbished from powermax.com.

However, the stories of people replacing the logic board 3-4 times has be a bit concerned!

I've seen some discussion that seem to indicate this problem is common with the 700mhz iBooks. Is this problem present in the other speeds also, or is it isolated to the 700mhz models?

I think in any case the Applecare plan would be a wise choice.

Can anybody give me an idea of what it would cost to replace the logic board in the event of an out of warranty situation?

Should I just give up on the idea of an iBook and get a powerbook?

It affects all of the white iBook G3 models. I would say go for a powerbook because it would be an expensive out of warranty repair to fix. And if you do get a refurbished computer, go to http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/71708/wo/Zj6Wy8coNL0s3fhJ5DQJyXLR0ee/0.0.7.1.0.5.13.0.3.0.0.0.0.3.1.1.0?25,51
