I've been fooling around with the latest Graphics Converter (4.1), and I happened to show it to a PC only friend of mine. He was in absolute awe of this program. And it was this that made me realize that we Mac users have been spoiled. Say what you want about the wealth of s/w for Windoze. In some areas, the Mac rules!

i could never imagine the pc catching up with the mac in this small, but interesting arena of computing

pc only friends of mine are not graphics people so they really don't care about the mac, they usually want to be able to find a new computer game every week at the local mall (god, and these people are adults, too!)

i do have one starving artist friend who wants a G4 but does some really great work on his pentium 166 and he uses his artistic skill and sense of composition to make up for his slow machine

A computer is just a tool and the artist then uses that tool to create their visions. Jet, as you have noticed your friends abilities come from within, not form their machine.

Too many people are mistaken that a new computer will make them a better artist. THey are or are not an artist before they touch the mouse/tablet. THat computer they are using will only make their job easier or harder. I personaly believe that a Mac makes my job easier. But I am very confident in saying that a Mac does not make me a better artist.

Composition /colour /balance /rythmn /movement/ negative space/ line/ etc. are part of the artist not the machine.

I use a Mac because when I was searching for a computer for the first time I had the choice of OS7.5 and Win3.1. Win3.1 did not make sense to me. I knew I would spend too much time learning how to use the machine and not enough time using it.

Well i study art in london, and i used to do work for a graphics company who were completely based around macs. So macs rule. they are made by artistic/intelligent/geek/computer people and therefore are better than PCs.
What i like about macs is external devices dont need to get driver updates every 2 seconds unlike PCs.Also a stable but powerful OS is important, it means it is easy to use different images where you want, how you want, and quickly. When you make life easier for a graphical designer it increases productivity and their confidence in their machine alot.
Also when it comes to graphical work macs really shine because of their build quality. Unlike most PC companies they dont skimp on the product design and manufacture, whether it is their displays or their machines. it is very important in graphical work to have precise instruments, evern if it is a computer.

I tend to think PC zealots use their machines as penis extensions. seeing as they only ever play with them.

& they just dont understand that they dont need an athlon 1800 etc if they only ever use it to feed their testosterone levels on the internet.

i went to grad school in the "soma district" of san francisco, the area known as the birthplace of multimedia, a place unofficially referred to as "multimedia gulch" and the place where the term multimedia was first coined

...but i recently heard from a mac magazine, i can't remember since i read all the US and UK issues, but that london is now the true "multimedia gulch" and london is where it is at for the world's best graphic designers

i heard industrial light and magic set up some killer graphics studios there in your small village and i always read macformat and imac magazines from the UK since they put macworld, macaddict, and mactech (in the US) to shame

i especially love the demos the UK mac magazines put out...amazing

in a country as large as the US, i don't know why we can't put out a mac magazine like the english do...i mean, like, we put out the monkees while you put out the beatles and the stones...we put out disco while you guys have led zepplin and bad company...it's just not fair!

is it the dole thing that makes you guys have the time to kick our ass in the arts?

Well, yeah london is kool when it comes to access of computers. But london is also too expensive to live in, because people are investing in houses with paper money the house prices are going to take a tumble soon i hope.
london is good, but also coventry has one of the best uni's for car design in europe, Birmingham also has a few good studios. And i hear edinburgh is good but im not sure about that.

America has also had some great musicians, although yeah the uk has probably edged it.

Sounds like Austin, Tx. Crazy, insane prices for ***** around here. Minimum rent for a decent (not ghetto) one bedroom apt is at least a grand a month. (expensive for Texas) We thank the "dell-ionaries" (as they are called here) for that.

But with AMD, Motorola, Dell, and others here in Austin laying off thousands of employees, hopefully the prices will return to normal.

i must be of an older generation because i originally thought PJ was from new york and i have no idea who this cook guy is...i see pictures of radiohead everywhere but i have never heard them

has anyone in england ever read macformat or computer graphic arts magazine? they really rock and are not full of ads like our american mac magazines

it doesn't appear to me that we in silicon valley have much better access to mac stuff than you guys do in the UK...i am still waiting on the iPod to come in and i still have not seen any 600 MHz iBooks on display at the two local mac stores in my town

does apple always announce way before they ship?...because if they do, that can't help their dismal stock price because they need to ship the day they announce so people could buy on impulse and help get the momentum going for apple

even though the G4 is a great machine, the delays did not help its image and motorola's slow progress could also have been a factor...maybe it's also time to give ibm a chance for the higher processor in the future after moto's G5

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't Norman Cook = Fatboy Slim?

And radiohead became mainstream american with the song "creep". Even though other radiohead is MUCH better than that song. In fact any radiohead is good (IMHO).Kid A has to be one of my favorite albums, from beginning to end. (Very good album to listen to while watching the iTunes visualizations ;))

Cobain was good, in the sense that he helped to open up a whole new steam of music, as did the whole Seattle music scene at the time (alice in chains, soundgarden, pearl jam, etc...)

i do remember seattle since i was at least twenty-something at the time and i could go to music clubs without looking like someone's parent

it's those stupid frumpy jowles which give me away these days and since the extra addition of wieght to certain areas of my body, i have not been carded

i might have a middle life crisis and buy something i don't need...like something very fast and silver...maybe a G5

radiohead didnt really become mainstream american, they have always been forward looking and they have always been innovative so they have never made music that has followed a trend. so i would say american mainstream became radiohead, and not the other way round.
cobain was good, but very repetitive. He opened up a genre of music that lives today in the form of grunge wannabes like ******* alien ant farm.

I was/am studying at St Martins. but im not sure where i am going with my life.im kind of confused. time to re-asses options.

What i was referring to is that the song "creep" was what got radiohead onto american radio's. And sadly most american's only know them for that song and maybe "karma police" since they have very few songs that are ever played on radio.

But having said that, having your song on american radio usually doesn't say much for quality. :(

Radiohead is probably my favorite modern band, I think overall I like Pink Floyd the best (there's just something about those Brit bands). My boss (26 years older than me) listens to Radiohead all the time...I borrowed Kid A from him. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that the other half of the company is in London, but it seems that Radiohead is the band of choice for computer geeks/mac heads such as ourselves. Jef-I recommend OK Computer if you haven't listened to them. Kid A and Amnesiac are quite different and a little weird, but they grow on you.

Jef: 'The bends' and 'Pablo Honey' are some early radiohead album titles and are not quiteas progressive as Kid A and amesiac. OK Computer is an awesome album, but like i posted earlier any radiohead is good radiohead.

i grew up with kiss, the first time around when they wore makeup, and i never believed gene simmons' explanation then that they wore makeup because they were homely...until, that is, when they actually took the makeup off - i wonder if slipknot are homely, too...actually compared to the rolling stones and aerosmith, kiss look pretty good for guys in their fifties

only the last act i mentioned is new or modern... kitty are great musicians but i can't get used to the demonic muppet sounding vocals and everywhere i go, i see kitty this and kitty that

issac hayes made the theme song for shaft

and david wilcox is a james taylor-like folk artist from the 90s with a small, but loyal following

i like almost anything musically and the last two music videos i watched were verdi's othello and metallica's binge and purge seattle...and oh yeah, i got to hear a little of the post be-bop cool jazz, new york style recently

What on EARTH do you get when you unplug KISS? I thought noise was their gimmick.

I also heard that they've more or less become their own tribute band.

Actually, one of my wife's girlfriends had a Kiss tribute band play at her wedding...

...Interesting, to say the least.

Come to think of it, I wonder if it WAS the original band, and they flew to Australia especially for the gig? Gene Symmonds really needs to catch some sun.

the last time they played, to my knowledge, was in australia during the time the drummer peter criss quit for good

they actually sound so much better with acoustic guitars and that was the suprising thing i was blown away by

like eric clapton who gave us his finest hour on the MTV unplugged show, kiss (with all six members present) all got together and kicked butt with two lead guitarists and two drummers jamming away to the vocals of gene and paul

i kind of wished the band had; 1) stayed like that with all six and 2) kept their stupid makeup off

incidentally, one of the unmasked members of kiss, eric singer - drummer, donned the makeup when the cat persona makeup member peter criss left the band on their australian tour...i guess he got tired of the greasepaint being 53 and all

...and you are right, kiss makes the best kiss tribute band, even if they are getting up there in age


...and congrats to kiwi on becoming a full member...that puts you up there with russell crowe for famous new zealand folk

Anyone ever listen to Dream Theater? They're a progressive rock band with some definite Pink Floyd influence. Their skill is amazing...it puts Metallica to shame. Oh, and the Dark Side/Wizard of Oz thing is really cool...I totally recommend it.
