is there any way to rotate the keyboard for text messaging or is there another text messaging program available? the little keyboard's sensitivity is really the only thing holding me back from getting the iphone

Sadly no.

I want to be able to do this for texting and for email. Why Apple didn't include this I don't know.

That's fine, but don't rush into that purchase.

I had a play with one today and the UI is far from intuitive. I also found it clunky and the touch screen unresponsive.

While I don't think I'd use a landscape keyboard much, it would be nice to have the option.

I don't know what you guys are talking about. My iPhone 3G has had horizontal typing in SMS since day one. I simply turn my phone into landscape and type.

It takes getting used to the keyboard that way but it works.

^^^I'd love to see a picture or screen shot of that, because I surely can't do it on my iPhone.

heres the thing that really bothers me.. Apple can obviously do it because they have landscape keyboard in Safari, just try it. It's awesome, i use it for posting on message boards and all that. The fact that I can't use it in SMS is pretty stupid, even though I find the normal keyboard for SMS to be just fine.

Sorry I was being sarcastic lol, I meant you can turn your phone landscape however the keyboard doesnt move. You can still type in landscape that way...thats why I said it takes getting used to to type like that.

Sorry for the confusion lol.

well, have you ever IMed on the iphone in landscape method?? You can not see what was texted to your earlier, so if you get another text fromt he same person while responding, then you have to switch back to portrait mode just to see what they texted.

It is a silly reason not to, because people still want it, but it just isnt that nessecary.

I hate to be one of those people, but I think it's easier to write in portrait mode. I'm just faster at it. Maybe it's just because most of the time I am forced to write in it, but I have better accuracy in portrait mode. The only time I type in landscape mode on my phone is when I'm looking at MacRumors and that's just because it's easier to read in landscape mode.

If you could text in landscape mode, the keys could be spaced out a little to make it easier for people with bad eyesight to type.

As for not being able to see what your responding to I don't think that would matter very much after you just read the message and turned your phone sideways to text back.

What I would really like to see is the ability to increase the text size.

So simple, and would make a world of difference to people with bad eyesight.

im surprised noone else has acknowledged the fact that it DOES work on safari.. which is rediculous that it would work there and NOT SMS.

i did explain a scenario where not being able to see what you are responding to would be an issue.. Have you ever gotten two texts back to back?

StoneColdSober

The problem is the way the iPhone's SMS app displays the threaded messages. The message bubbles takes up extra room and would make reading a message in the SMS thread hard if not impossible to read. If Apple does add landscape mode to SMS they really need to add the option to change how the messages are displayed to resolve this issue.

My wife and I got our iPhones the same day. On hers, rotating the phone during texting brings up landscape. Mine won't no matter what. My phone's setting menu has no provision for this anywhere. I'm not posting pictures of it if you don't believe me. I found this thread trying to figure out how to unlock the functionality in my phone. Also hers came with a voice memo program that I really like that mine didn't have. Strange.

Does your phone have latest firmware from itunes???

Goto itunes, plug iphone in, and click update on your iphone summary screen in itunes!
