I have an iPhone 3G, I have a small what looks like a string of hair going up a quarter of the screen, I don't know if this is one of those things that are going to get bigger and break the screen? It looks like a scratch but I thought it was scratch proof? I might have to go to AT&T and get an apple care. I tried to clean it but its still there what should I do?

Has it been dropped? If not but it has any damage (other than the hairline crack) that may cause it to appear that it has been dropped you may have problems getting it exchanged.

the worst kind of drop may have been on carpet, not any over a foot

Don't worry about getting applecare just yet, remember you still have a year-long warranty to fall back on. Its when that warranty is almost over that you should consider applecare because all it does is extend that warranty.

Can you feel the scratch? If you can, I probably wouldn't bother, as the genius will most likely think its your fault. But if you can't feel anything, and it looks like its underneath on the other side, it could be worth bringing it back. I did hear about a guy that found a scratch on the underside of the glass face and managed to get a replacement, but then again, he brought it back pretty early.

What ever you do, do not tell apple you ever dropped it.

You need to think about what you will say because they will obviously say well you had to have done something to it.

If i were you i'd get it insured, wait a week or two then claim accidental damage (check excess) because iphone repairs are expensive.

You could try taking a picture of your phone if you've got a camera handy. A physical defect like a crack wont show up on a screenshot.
