Here it is:
When you have you iPod touch (this is what I have, so i can't confirm for the iPhone, but it probably works the same anyways), this is what you have to do to enable this secret play menu:
1) Turn on iPod
2) Turn off the screen by clicking the power button once
3) Double tap the home button
4) Ta da!! :)

I hate to tell you this but that isn't a secret feature. You can change the function of the home button double click in Settings > Home Button.
Home Button Options:
Double-clicking the home Button goes to:
Home
Phone Favorites
iPod
iPod Controls: On/Off
When playing music, show iPod controls instead.

And it's not unique to the iPod Touch. It works on the iPhone as well. LOL :D

ipod or iphone?
i dont think ipods have the feature to choose what home does, i cant remember really because i do because im jailbroken;)
i still keep it as music tho, technically if i felt like figuring out the code i could make it launch a GBA game.

ipod or iphone?.
I think it's just the iPhone, my iPod touch running 2.0.2 doesn't have it either.

Man all my touches have had this feature, it is to make it easier to access your music. It was even in the product demo video. I use it at work, if I don't like the song, I can double tap it and regardless of how it is set, i can change songs and volume. I wish it would come up with an iPod Click wheel type thing so I can just change tracks and do the volume like you do on the shuffle. This would feel so natural. I just hate how small the volume thing is. I go to do the volume and either I miss it or I change the track...

Cool!
What sucks is that I've had my Touch for almost a year and I never knew about this feature.
And it's something that's been bugging me all the time.

If the topic I made which lists many features like this that gets updated every time there's a major software update was stickied then we wouldn't keep getting threads like this...

Outstanding! That's gonna come in real handy in the car! Much easier than trying to unlock the screen with the slider. Thanks for the tip!

this is a very apple move. they probably figured it would be to time consuming to unlock and go to the ipod section just to change the song or volume, especially when doing things like driving.
and the only way to change the home buttons function on iPod Touch is to jailbreak it.
