Last minute tidbits reveal a few more details about Apple's plans for later today. According to our sources, Apple will indeed be refreshing their entire iPod line at the media event.

Specifically, iPod Nanos are expected to be size-bumped from the current 4GB/8GB sizes up to 8GB/16GB models. As well, Apple will be introducing 9 different colors for each Nano (up from the current 6 colors). The additional colors are expected to be Purple, Yellow and Orange.

Sizes on the iPod Touch, however, will remain unchanged with 8GB, 16GB and 32GB options. Without size bumps, it's still unclear what other changes are in store for the iPod Touch.

ipod touches will have plastick backs... a la iphone.

but the idea of the new nanos sounds fun. the orange shuffle was the coolest of all and the 'spy shots' are in the same orange... NICE

Sizes of nanos as expected, now how much will they drop the prices of the Touch, we will find out in a few short (feels very long) hours. And I love yellow!

If they stay on 32Go (which would be regretful) I hope they will compensate with lot of hardware !

Those are really needed to support a bunch of applies.
Also, I would be happy to have multiple color for the Touch !!

I might pick up an orange or black iPod nano to compliment my iPhone 3G :p Maybe it will tide me over while I wait for Apple to release their new MBP's. Bummer about the iPod touches.

I have the 32gig model, and I really wanted to upgrade to the 64gb model. I dreamed of even 128gb model at a premium. (I would have paid it.)

I still hope the rumor is wrong and Apple keeps with the differentiation of more storage for the iPod touch. Otherwise, the touch will just be a phone-less, cheaper iPhone.

But who knows what tomorrow will bring. Honestly, I should be happy to not spend money in today's terrible economy and the prospect of a McCaine/Palin White house.

What I do hope and want is high quality updates to iTunes and iPhone. The shoddy quality of the current set of products stinks beyond belief. Sure, I'd love to buy a 64gb touch, but I'll be more than happy with quality.

Give us quality Apple...

Sorry to rain on the parade.

I get really excited when new products come out, but new colours for iPods just doesn't qualify; I mean it's not really front page news or anything.

Capacity upgrades are also pretty much expected, so no groundbreaking news there either.

iTunes 8; also some element of expectation there as well. After all we have been through a few versions.

Reading about iPhone software updates is about as exciting as reading Motorola Forums.

So, where's the beef?

Why is there so much excitement about a press conference? Of course Apple are gonna ham it up and make a big deal, but they can afford to hire out massive venues and put humungous banners on the walls.. they are very very wealthy. They can JUST announce some new colours, its not really THAT an expense for them..

Laptops.. upgrades.. SO?? Every PC manufacturer releases new products and has press events to release them.. usually they don't have press events to launch speed bumps and colours.. they don't need to.

I think if we all calmed down about a press event, and realise that its JUST a press event.. some coloured ipods.. even a new ipod.. big deal!! Its an MP3 player!

I think we're all too big fans to see that this is a press event and Apple are good at keeping the fanboys happy.. and creating an interest where there probably isn't really anything THAT exciting.. we shall see!

I only want to concentrate on the one thing that matters: new iPods!! I've grown tired of my nano fatty, and the battery is not what it was a year ago.. Im pretty sure there is a yet to be guessed surprise of some sort. It was the start of September last year and in years past that they use to announce some sort of unexpected little bonus that helps big selling for the holiday season. Just like last year the first event in September they suddenly dropped the iPhone price $200 and blew them out of the stores for the holidays!

So I would expect a little something more than whats expected so far.

Sizes on the iPod Touch, however, will remain unchanged with 8GB, 16GB and 32GB options. As I expected. I see 64 GB in H1 2009. I also see the 8 GB $50 less than the 16 GB. This also means that the iPod nano and iPod touch would get closer together in price.

With the new Zune 120GB, what do think will be done to the iPod Classic?

120 low end, 160 high?Probably, at $249/$299 prices.

Amen!

Finally someone sensible around here :)

Talk about the emperors new clothes syndrome. "I can't sleep because a former IT company, nowadays more of a mp3 player maker decides to add a few new colors to the case of their mp3 player."

It's not like they are bringing out any new exiting products according to the rumors. No rocket packages that let's you fly or zero emission cars costing peanuts. Even a $500 Macbook would be considered existing.

A new color for the iPod?????? Talk about luxury problems.

But in a few hours we'll know if it's just hot air or actually something new that Apple will be showing. Talk about manpulating the masses and everyone is happy being a puppet of Jobs.

and one more thing....purple iPods.....

Come on people. I seriously doubt Steve Jobs is showing up to show us colored iPods. Total diversion. Yeah, there will be purple ipods, but to think Apple would stage an event like to this just to show off some new colors.....doubt it.

Of course there's the theory this event is staged to show the world a "healthy" Steve. Bunk. If Steve wants to prove anything to anyone, he'll do it by walking into their office.

There may not be a big product release today, but there will be some kind of transitional revelation. It's all been discussed. We'll see.

Patent applications galore. Brilliant People and brilliant leadership (with a few miscues along the way). Apple is fine and today will bring at least of hint of what's under the tip of the iPhone.

People seem to be ignoring the fact that the iPod nano is being completely changed, in, not only colour, but in shape, size, and storage capacity.

The iPod touch is getting a more tapered shape, with possibly external volume control buttons.

Not to mention iPhone OS 2.1 firmware.

They really need to do something about the ipod/itunes and syncing to your computer....

We had all our songs on my wife's desktop. when her computer died, I moved all my songs to my macbook (her music taste is a little different than mine).

Since I switched her from an HP desktop to a mac mini, and her music collection is much smaller (she maybe has 50-75 CD's; where as I have over 5,000 individually downloaded songs, songs from cassettes, songs from Cd's that since got trashed, preaching and Bible study internet streams, etc).... I was hoping just to take her songs from her ipod nano and move them to her itunes.

NOT GONNA HAPPEN... I received a pop-up that stated "You cannot update a windows formatted ipod from a mac". I was like what the heck.... Then it asked me if I wanted to reset it back to factory defaults. Since she is leaving for a trip tomorrow, I said no for now. But the problem is, now she won't be able to have her newest selections with her; and I am going to have to re-rip all her CD's since her original Itune collection was lost on the dead computer.

Looks like I am gonna have the same problem as I am a switcher. My 2004 antique ipod is going to have to be reformatted. I could see mine having an issue because it is sold old, but her's? which is only a couple of years old?

c'mon........ I mean if my mother-in-law's cheap $100 no-name mp3 player she won at a company banquet lets me drag songs from her player to itunes and then from itunes to her player on (both mac and windows) with no problems - then why can't ipod.:o

Oh, for those wondering why I call mine an antique - it is almost 5 years old, in the shape of the classic, has a monochrome screen, can' play videos, etc.....

Maybe we need an upgrade.....

Something to add though, semi-translucent click wheel, with the symbols as OLED screens. This will enable the Nano to be rotated and the symbols change to the correct orientation. That'll be cool.

Oh noble shopper, hope this interim gear will 'tide you over'...

Sorry mate, not to pick on you, it's just all, well, um, all underwhelming.

Don't we all own an iPod? Don't they work alright now? Who gives a rat's ass if it's bright orange or tall!

I mean if Apple is not making stuff that improves our lives or the lives of someone, somewhere, than what is the point?? Otherwise, it's just more coloured baubles bouncing in front of our lower selves, 'gimme gimme'!

Well, stuff that, give us something we really need, not yesterdays good idea in a new coat.

Well, for the Mac, there is an application called MusicRescue that works for both Windows and Mac formatted iPods. Plug it in and open MusicRescue, and select the music you want to transfer, and BOOM, your music is now back on your system.

The reason that Apple cannot do this is because this can allow for DRM-protected music to be transferred to any other mp3 player, violating some serious copyrights. Apple doesn't care that 3rd-party software does it, but if they tried it, they'd get in trouble.

One thing I want to know: will Apple update the firmware on 3G iPod nanos to take advantage of iTunes 8.0. I think this is very possible, given that the visual interface of the 3G and 4G nanos are pretty much the same (except for the 4G nano taking advantage of the widescreen display).

Thank you for sharing your consumptive preferences with us. Great that buying more Apple gear is front and centre of your conscience.

Go on Apple. Make my life.

That's the point. This is how Apple makes a lot of their money.

Small kids see the new iPod in the store and beg their parents to buy them one.

Flashy people see the new iPod and want it, just to say they have the newest and the best.

People who have broken their iPods or have them stolen can now buy the new iPod, feeling happy now that they not only have an iPod again, but better than the one they had to begin with.

I agree with you, the fact that the company constantly reinvents their products seems a bit rediculous, but it makes them loads of money.

I think Apple can come out with something really crazy for shuffle. With no physical changes last year. Shuffle maybe the biggest surprise!

It's true. But it seriously can't get any smaller can it? The next thing I'd imagine is building a shuffle into headphones, but that's got its problems too...

Apple generally doesn't hold press events with Steve for mere speed bumps but rather for tech advances. Personally, I don't think we're getting the entire picture with the current rumors. By themselves, new nanos and iTunes 8 might warrant a press release. But coupled with whatever they've been able to keep under wraps (iPhone announcement?), I think this will be a pretty significant event.

I really wish the touch got to 64 gb.

A 32 gb will likely remain grossly overpriced as it is the top of the line ipod. My modest music collection is almost 20 gigabytes. So much for putting photos and a couple of movies on there also. Formatted capacity after iphone software is on there is probably 23 gb or so.

Still excited about today though.

New iTunes 8 isn't all that exciting either. I suspect (hope) there is a "one more thing." Remember the fall event in '05. Apple announced Front Row and the Video iPod along w/ a refreshed iMac. Then SJ said those 3 beautiful words and popped the first iPod nano out of his pocket.

If Apple is actively telling reporters that this is a "can't miss" event it's going to have to be more than what we've seen so far, and I think it will be.

If there isn't there are going to be a whole lot of P.O.d reporters for being misled. And SJ knows you don't P.O people who write about your products. If this even were just about the typical refreshes and iTunes 8 then there would be zero reason for Apple to specifically tell reporters the event is a "must." They have never done this before and to mislead them over mundane stuff would be like the boy who cried wolf. Apple would lose a ton of cred. and the typical headline would be "Has Apple Lost It's Mojo?" and "Is Apple's 15 minutes Up?"

Unless they're going to pull off another amazing invention of iPhone proportions (surely we would've heard about it by now?) or it's a Mac related thing (couldn't be any less likely) I can't see how that statement stands true. Or at least, how it isn't any bigger of a deal than most other Apple events.

The only thing I can think of, is if it's something to do with the company itself. The most likely "big deal" options I can think of are:
* Literally that, a big deal being struck between them and someone else (Google seem like an obvious candidate)
* Steve Jobs stepping down
* Apple splitting up into Media (iPods, iPhones, ATV etc) and Computing (Mac, duh) divisions/companies.

I agree with this post. If this is all they have Steve is going to be scraping to make an hour long presentation.

"The iPod nano now available in a few colors, they are the best nanos we have made so far. The colors are really, really great. I really love how they look. Aren't these just elegant? 16 GB is the largest storage we have ever done in a nano, again I have to say aren't these just awesome?"

I mean how long can he go on about that? I suppose he could blather on about iTunes 8 and phone sales for awhile but there surely is something more than this?

DisturbedLen
Sep 9, 2008, 08:55 AM
My predictions/wishes:

iTunes 8 will have all (or most) music with no DRM.
Users will be able to redownload songs originally purchased with DRM.

iPod Touch will be WiMax-ready or built in 3G Data. VZ data capability built in? Naaaa... Doubt these changes to iPod will happen, but it's a nice thought. But the iPod Touch needs speakers, a microphone and a camera . (No flaming on the last point).

New firmware with push and major bug fixes. How about native disk access?

I agree. Minor product variations do not an event worth covering make.

I'm going to bet on one of the following:

1) A fit Steve Jobs bouncing around the stage to reassure investors.
2) Steve announcing he's retiring
3) DRM free music available from all the major labels.

Has to be one of these.

I know they've denied this but still, my punt is that they've managed to negotiate with the labels and will be bringing out a subscription service for iTunes. (Tied to MobileMe?)
This would be a huge deal - sign up to it and suddenly your iPhone is basically a play anything anywhere device, and the iPod touch is a play anything so long as your on wifi device. Possibly also introduce a new iPod nano with wifi to tie in with it.

Makes sense to me, but we'll see how it pans out...

If this 'tidbit' is true it is just sad for Apple.

New Nanos? That's the bulk of the changes?
'Oh, we aren't changing the Touch, it is now the same size as the Nano. Just putting on a plastic back!' seems highly unrealistic.
ONE MORE THING - iTunes 8 will tell you what songs you probably want to purchase.

They still do. If you weren't sleeping in class you'd have learned that companies seek growth and the best way to get growth is product diversification. The iPod's success has less to the Mac's recent growth. I think it's safe to say the iPod saved the Mac. Apple and the state of Mac was not in great shape back in 2001.

it's sad that most of you guys don't notice how apple is fooling you - they put SJ on a CA stage, and you go crazy- while in fact all they want to do is get the student rebate that is ending next monday and make you get the "new" (lol) nano with an OLD laptop (which they are then going to upgrade later, post-15, so that they get rid of all the laptops in stock).

therefore: cosmetic changes to the ipods, you'll buy it, 20% of you will get it for "Free" buy getting a laptop (or apple's squeezing out the last students going back to school to get an apple), and then there'll be new laptops post-15. this even is bogus, BS, marketing, NOT innovation.

it's sad that most of you guys don't notice how apple is fooling you - they put SJ on a CA stage, and you go crazy- while in fact all they want to do is get the student rebate that is ending next monday and make you get the "new" (lol) nano with an OLD laptop (which they are then going to upgrade later, post-15, so that they get rid of all the laptops in stock).

therefore: cosmetic changes to the ipods, you'll buy it, 20% of you will get it for "Free" buy getting a laptop (or apple's squeezing out the last students going back to school to get an apple), and then there'll be new laptops post-15. this even is bogus, BS, marketing, NOT innovation.

Obviously you are the type that thinks they are the smartest person in the room. Personally I think your observations are way off base. Apple isn't fooling anyone here.

1) A free Touch on top of EDU pricing is nothing to sneeze at. Even if you don't need it you can eBay it for $.

2) Students that need a computer now, need a computer now, not in a month or whenever Apple decides to ship new models.

3) If, as you say, the new models will be "BS, marketing, NOT innovation," then what is the point of waiting for the new models? Your logic is flawed when you chastise people for being "duped" into buying the current model when new ones are so near.

4) I think everyone here recognizes that Apple is a COMPANY, and as such its primary goal is to sell product and services to make money.

5) Technology typically is EVOLUTIONARY, not REVOLUTIONARY. Pick a tech product, any product, a TV, a radio, a computer, etc. The second gen is similar to the first gen, but the third gen pulls away from the first even as its similar to the 2nd. This cycle goes on and on. The first TV looks nothing like current TVs. Even the brightest among us cannot innovate as fast as you seem to demand.

New iPods released today WILL NOT be eligible for the back-to-school promotion. Apple will not alter the terms of the existing rebate (if you read the form it clearly lists the Apple model numbers that are eligible). Furthermore, take last year as an example. New iPods were released before the expiration of the 2007 back to school promotion and Apple clearly mentioned that those new iPods couldn't be used towards the promotion. They also reduced the price of the rebate.

....and introduce music rental services through iTunes as the 'one more thing' item perhaps??? Not that I'd ever want to rent my music, but perhaps others want to, and it makes business sense to offer it for those who want it, catering to all tastes, although I wouldn't know why you would want to rent music....:apple:

Not so. Crunchgear is reporting Apple will announce a 120GB model to replace the 80GB model. The 160GB will remain since that is the largest drive for the form factor.

I'd like to see them drop the price of the 160 to $249 and just have one model of the Classic (in two colors).

Its all important you see our new nanos in ORANGE!!! No no... we are not touching the laptops. No no.. mac minis are still the ugly red headed step child. Uh, nope, no touch tablet. Errr.... BUTTTTT we are releaseing Itunes 8 that has a new visual display when playing music!!

WOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWW!

I cannot believe they made a big hoopla for this crap.

As far as I know the event at the moment has not happened yet. At the moment all we know is the rumours. If at the end of the event we don't know any more than we know now fair enough to complain. But complaining before the event has even happened seems a little premature.

People seem to be ignoring the fact that the iPod nano is being completely changed, in, not only colour, but in shape, size, and storage capacity.

The iPod touch is getting a more tapered shape, with possibly external volume control buttons.

Not to mention iPhone OS 2.1 firmware.

It's not just about colours...

If by "ignoring" you meant "while it's useful and good to know, I'm not sure what makes it so ground breaking and revolutionary that I'm supposed to get excited" then yes, I suppose you could say I'm ignoring that.

I've actually wanted and love the current shuffle model for some time but still can't warrant $50 for it. If they drop price to 25-30 range it might be worth it.

Not sure what they can do to redesign it that could be much better then what it currently offers besides a mini screen. You don't need menus, but a single line black and white song title would be neat.

Apple was never fooling me, or any of my friends in college who bought their products. This is a well known practice of theirs, if you pay any attention to their release schedules.

What else would you really expect them to do? If you have a business where you're about to get stuck with lots of costly "old stock" inventory at all your retail outlets, as well as in warehouses, wouldn't you want to do everything possible to sell it off before the new product is released?

Truthfully, the vast majority of students I know aren't *so* into their computers that they really care if they've got the "very latest, just announced" model, or last year's version of it. They're just buying because it's "back to school" time and they can either get parents or relatives to help foot the bill at that moment, or they found a way to pay for it with student loan money they just received. It's plenty "good enough" for their needs to have a model one-removed from the very latest revision, and something like a free iPod sweetens the deal.

Whoever frankensteined this image in Photoshop made the graphics a tad too small. On my 15'4" screen w/ 1680/1050 the image is pretty close to scale 1:1 (I held up a 1st Gen Nano next to it and it was the same width), and the text is microscopic. I have 20/20 vision and I have no problem with high resolution, but the text at the bottom (ColdPlay/Viva La Vida/Viva La Vida) is just ridiculous... it's smaller than the fine print on the back of iPods and iPhones.

If this picture is true then the video playback size is no bigger than my fatty.
I hope you can flip it to the side and the video expands.
Yes, of course it flips, that's the whole point. Apple apparently wants to go back to the narrow form factor of the 1st and 2nd Gen Nano, and the only way to do that while keeping the display reasonably large is to make a display that switches to landscape mode when you flip the Nano to the side.

What I would look for new in a few hours is based on the following information, and specifically the last line:

In an article titled: New devices aim to claim set-top box market
By Rex Crum, MarketWatch Last update: 11:17 a.m. EDT Sept. 5, 2008

http://www.marketwatch.com/news/story/new-devices-aim-claim-set-top/story.aspx?guid=%7B8C3FDE21-67C0-4CBE-A22A-5E22E47F5192%7D&dist=msr_5

"We're seeing people change the way they watch TV, with services like On Demand and high-definition programming," Barrett said. "We think we have the technology that creates a device that aggregates everything a person might want in their TV box."

Tim Bajarin, president of technology research firm Creative Strategies, said that none of the new players in the connected entertainment market is close to being declared the sector's winner. He did give high marks to the AppleTV device for the simplicity of setup and for how Apple has created what Bajarin called "an Apple-based ecosystem" in which the company has linked together its own hardware, software and services to provide wireless streaming of digital content stored on a computer and renting and purchasing of movies and TV shows from the iTunes store. Apple wouldn't make any company officials available to comment for this story.

"They're all looking in the right direction," Bajarin said. "Ultimately, what is going to succeed is an ability to tie together the hardware and software with content and service."

Whereas Apple is keeping its TV efforts largely to itself and not working with partners to provide either devices or content for the AppleTV, the opposite is partly the case with online DVD-renting giant Netflix.

In an article titled: AT&T launching new DVR technology in TV fight with cable By DAVID HO Cox News Service Tuesday, September 09, 2008

http://www.statesman.com/biz/content/shared/money/stories/2008/09/U_VERSE09_1STLD_COX_F9344.html

[Selected Quotes]

Ramping up its push into the pay-TV business dominated by cable companies, AT&T Inc. on Tuesday is launching an improved digital video recorder technology that lets customers play back multiple high-definition shows on sets throughout a home.

The upgraded service will roll out over the next few months for AT&T U-verse TV subscribers around the country who have a viewing package that includes a DVR.

Welday said the new DVR technology will help lure customers away from cable. He touted the features of the "Total Home DVR" as unmatched by other providers.

The DVR improvements will come through a free automatic software update while the physical machine remains the same.

The new capabilities include being able to play back and control three recorded high-definition shows and one standard-definition program simultaneously on different TVs with set-top boxes. Subscribers will also be able to play back from the single DVR multiple showings of the same program on different TVs.

+++++++OF PARTICULAR INTEREST+++++++

The first upgrades are expected in the area near San Francisco this coming weekend. The company would not provide details about when the changes will reach customers in other states.

The stores going offline has become an integral part of the buildup and hype. I'm fairly certain that they shut the stores down 2 hours earlier than they need to, just to make everyone go crazy with anticipation. I agree. Minor product variations do not an event worth covering make.

I'm going to bet on one of the following:

1) A fit Steve Jobs bouncing around the stage to reassure investors.
2) Steve announcing he's retiring
3) DRM free music available from all the major labels.

Has to be one of these.

Ooh, I never thought of no. 3. But that would be a "big deal" of absolute mammoth proportions, as it'd require a sudden U-turn into common sense by the record labels, which I don't see happening any time soon. So yes, that would be a huge deal, somewhere along the lines of Hell freezing over, or Duke Nukem Forever being announced as an iPhone exclusive available immediately for 99 cents from the App store :)

One other theory of course, is that they're lying. They can't think of anything exciting to do, and nobody seems interested, so they say it's going to be a "big deal" in a desperate attempt to generate hype.

I hope the gadget company does spin off computers because they are the lowest priority in the company now. I said this was going to happen when the company changed it's name and nobody believed me. I wish I had been wrong.

You (we) could be wrong yet, it's all just speculation right now. It does seem like a perfectly logical course of action though - I just hope that if they do split, the Mac company gets back to having the passion for.. well, Macs.. that it had 4-5 years ago before all the iPod and iPhone stuff took off.

The iTunes Store via iTunes 7.7 will still be up.

Another apple media event, another time to bypass the mac mini... Oh how long I have waited for a re-fresh. Not likely today with all the buzz about the ipods. For the holidays perhaps? A boy can dream.

Sorry if this has been mentioned before, as I didn't read through all of the posts; but what if this "big" announcement also contains the rumored "Beatles iPod" along with their entire catalog at the iTunes store? Has this been offered as a possibility? I haven't seen any rumors relating to this lately.

That would be the one thing that would make me head off to the Apple store this week!

I'm hoping for more battery life on the ipod touch. Any home
Ha! Fat chance. As long as Steve Jobs is around, slimness will always be priority #1. Did you ever hear him come out on stage and talk about how great the battery life is? No. All he wants to do is squeeze the word "thin" into as many sentences as possible. "Look how THIN it is. OMG it's so THIN. Wow. THIN. Can you believe it? It's so amazingly THIN! It's so THIN, in fact, that it's invisible from the side. THINTHINTHINTHINTHIN! Seriously. I'm gonna pinch my arm now, this is just too unbelievably THIN!"

Apple = amazing mobile products with such puny and non-replaceable batteries, you have to make sure to never be more than 2 feet away from the nearest power outlet or USB port.

The stores going offline has become an integral part of the buildup and hype. I'm fairly certain that they shut the stores down 2 hours earlier than they need to, just to make everyone go crazy with anticipation. The maintenance itself can't possibly take more than a minute, I mean the new pages were probably finished a week ago, and uploading them will only take a few seconds.

I guess you're absolutely on point! Its become a tradition of Apple in this regard!

And to imagine that companies like dell and hp lose a large sum if their stores go down for even a minute!<sarcasm>

This never ceases to amaze me. It makes me wonder what will be available in 5 years and even 10 years. The products they're selling today will be archaic in comparison like the products of 5 to 10 years ago are today.

I'm working for a music group in Paris. And I can guarantee you that the big thing of the event is a new way to listen to the music that you download on the store !!!

iTunes 8 will add interactivity to the music and help you to create and mix the artists tracks by downloading blocks put availaible by the artist.

I swear that i say is 100% legit. You have been warned. Please keep in mind my post.

i reckon the price of the touch will drop to about the same as an iphone (on a phone contract). there was a rumour they wanted to change the price to differentiate it from the iphone. so i think they will mostly the same, but i would expected a healthy price cut.

This isn't simple HTML updates. You're talking updates of products and prices in a massive database and making sure everything is together.
I know, but they can update the database in advance and test everything internally before they roll it out. 2 hours before the event would be a very bad time to make sure everything is together.

Except it's already tested and done well in advance.

Yeah new macbooks would be lovely but I don't really think that it's going to happen. Though would love to be wrong.

I meant a completely new product not memory bumps bla bla bla. I want to see whatever new product that is going to apparently cause their profits to go down in the short term.

Maybe its just me, but these iPod events just don't seem all that interesting. Apple events used to have an almost rock concert feel to them, but lately they don't have the excitement like they used to.

I think maybe its just a sign of success. When Apple was fighting for its life they seemed to really go all out. Complacency may cause things to be mundane.

I guess I'm just not pumped over a new nano shape and a price drop.

Well sure. Think about it, if you're going up on stage to introduce a product as thin as MacBook Air, you're gonna look fat, even if you're Kiera Knightley. So he had to get "in shape".

Poor Steve, I bet he's been eating pure lard now for 2 months just for this event. The stock price will literally depend on his weight. Heck, the stock of other hi-tech companies will plummet if he looks gaunt again. It's a crazy world.

Perhaps the online store is getting a large visual makeover to tie its appearance in with a new look for iTunes 8. That's one possibility, other than Apple just screwing with us, why the store is down so early.

Mostly, I suspect Apple is just screwing with us though.

And the nano to get a new UI to suit the tall size-we got a new UI last year, and niw it's being changed again.

Most going to impressed to see price drops and the new nano-though any improvement to touch makes it even more worth buying for me.

Sure, some of the lack of excitement can be blamed on Apple's complacency of late, but another and more important factor IMO is that there's so much spoiler info these days, the element of surprise is pretty much gone.

A few year back, Apple's secrecy was watertight and you never knew what they would show next. But the predictions have been bang on target for the last two events (MacBook Air and iPhone 3G), and it looks like this one will be no different.

Nobody HAS to read spoilers, of course, but it's easier said than done. I think I've ruined pretty much every movie, TV show episode and Apple keynote for myself for about 5 years now.
I'm predicting the release for the iPhono Nano ... just in time for xmas.
Yeah, I've been thinking along the same lines. The current iPhone is certainly not for everyone, it may be flat enough but it's still quite wide and heavy. At some point they've just gotta release an iPhone for the folks who can't stand carrying around a phone larger than a matchbox.

Much like the DRM free rumour, it'd be damn near impossible for Apple to have worked out huge deals like that with all the majors, and for no hint of it to have slipped out of any of those labels Apple may be good at keeping its staff in line, but record labels are typically far leakier. If it was going to happen, I honestly believe you'd have heard rumblings a while back.

Well no. Those "simple HTML updates" would actually be more of an issue. With modern "E-Commerce" type packages, it's very easy to control what products are available, change pricing, etc, without taking the whole site offline. Apple just choose to do things their way.
