buy a MacPro 8core at 2.8ghz, wait or not?

Hi all,

recently change idea to buy an iMac 2.8ghx to buy a Macpro refurbished.

But in "buyers guide" tell that is not convenient, but nobody talk about if is possible an upgrade today or later in january or when is spected.

If is in January obviously dont wait.

What is your opinion?

Had the same problem, bought my MacPro (ref.) a few weeks ago and I'm more than happy that i didn't wait - it's a wonderful machine!
 
so a buddy of mind is wanting to move to a mac from a pc to help kick start his business. he's currently working with someone but want to leave there (a pc video studio). assuming he want to start it asap, would you suggest for him to wait?

I am in no rush to get a Mac Pro. My MacBook works wonderfully and I can do everything I need to in Photoshop (et al) but I would like something that is less sluggish when moving between lots of pro apps.

Everyone wants the new cool thing so I am considering waiting but when the current Mac Pro came out the RAM price was ridiculous. Does anyone know the upcoming Intel specs that we could expect to see and whether new RAM will be needed?

I would be quite happy with the current model if it is going to cost me something ridiculous like $2000 for a RAM upgrade on the next model

Gainestown processor (CPU speed not yet publicized for Mac Pro)
DDR3 ECC (1333 MHz I think). Already available, and as now, buy 3rd party. ;)

The QuickPath Interconnect used by the Nehalem series looks really exciting

Which is why those of us interested in the Mac Pro are drooling. :p
Early Bloomfield tests (search result) showed a positive result in speed.

Take a look if you're interested. Though it's not the Gainestown, it should give a good indication as it's the same basic architecture scaled back.
 
Before I bought this baby, I considered waiting to buy- but I got this one refurbished for $1,999 and it was an offer I couldn't refuse. :p

And really, do I need eight cores? :rolleyes:
 
Yes, buy now if you need it.
The current core duo 2 penryn architecture is very stable, and has been refined quite a bit.

Think about this,
The new Nehalem build with quickPath Interconnect, is going to a completely different architecture for Intel and Apple. The mac pro might even see a case redesign.
Lots of room for both BIG and minor problems. The REV. A woes.

Remember When the early 2008 mac pro's were introduced. Not to different then the models it replaced. But Macrumors was quite busy, for a few months. With the dreaded WAKE FROM SLEEP ISSUE, and I remember their were some graphic card issues as well. + problems with fans spinning to high.

Don't forget All the g5 rev.A coolant leakage issues.

Apple will alway do their best to resolve any issues. But if their big problems, you might have a big head ache.

Actually, To tell all you the truth. I'm very happy with my 2008 mac pro. But I know, I will be in envy of all you nehalem waiters. When Mac World 09 hits.

We'll have to deal with it, as I doubt it will be problem free. ;)
