i'm trying to remember the last time i was truely excited about an apple 'event'....maybe the initial announcement of the iphone back in Jan 07, but even that was tempered by the 6 month waiting period for the release...

seriously, when was the last time you were were satisfied with an 'event'??

i know this was ipod/itunes specific, but the only thing i wanted was to hear about 2.1...and it seemed like it took all of 10 sec to announce it...if Nike+ is on the iphone, that would be nice, but it doesn't seem likely...

BTW: 2.1 on friday? WTF.

Some people are never going to be satisfied with these "events." It's like being addicted to meth: they anticipate the high, but after that first one, they anticipate how good they're going to feel sooo much that they can never reach it again.

Besides, the cat was pretty much out of the bag: new iPod designs, new iTunes, firmware update for the iPhone not too far away. Did you expect Steve was also going to come out with an iSolarCar? i$10Oil? iWorldPeace? The iPresident? A new iFannieMae and iFreddieMac to finance the iMortgage on your iHouse and fix the iEconomy?

There are just more important things to get worked up - and disappointed - over.

How in the world could they not even address the 3G issue. The words 3G never even came out of their mouth - dissapointing isn't even the word, it's a damn shame in my opinion, and I don't need to wait till Friday to judge the update to say that. As a company holding such a major press event it's your RESPONSIBILITY to address your clients' issues/concerns - at the very least they could have addressed the "2%" of their client base with faulty hardware! This is just bad for business and low class. To only add salt to wound they just had to throw in the whole bid about their "new features" too just to get more exposure. All they care about is selling, selling, and selling more. This wasn't about their customers, it was about selling a new product and making more money - good going Apple, you're very quickly losing any little faith I had in you. Where's the good competition already? Cause the lack of it is really making Apple way too lazy for my liking. Here's to hoping the Android phones and Nokia Tube can bring some class and customer care back to the marketshare.

HA, this might describe me perfectly...

the first event i remember is when itunes was released for windows (PC user in 2003), and i remember spending a ton of $$ that day buying songs i forgot about and filing up my recently purchased ipod....it was certainly a high that hasn't been reproduced...

kind of reminds me of Pavlov's dog, i hear "apple event", and salivate at the thought of having my mind blown...sadly i'm always a bit disappointed.

Because it's an AT$T issue?! Be real, it's a network issue.

The 3G problems were fixed in 2.0.2, that is why people in rural 3G areas have no problems, in urban areas, idiots have refused to upgrade to 2.0.2, or they have jailborked using 2.0.1 as a template. Upgrading to 2.1 will fix most of the 3G and other iPhone issues.

I was expecting/hoping for:

1) Improvements to GPS and possibly the release of a real GPS app (this had been discussed a while back that Apple was working on 2.1 and it would have improvements in GPS)
2) The ability to connect a Nike+ dongle......seems so basic...why wasn't this incorporated when the 3G was first released??? It doesn't matter if you are under the opinion that the iPhone is or is not the best product for this function, the functionality should be a bit of code since the standard iPod sync port is already present. It's a simple function that would make a lot of Apple customers happy.

Edit: Oh, and I wasn't expecting the headphones, but I am in the market for a new pair that have a mic and controls for my iPhone. Why in the world would Apple make a product that matches so perfectly with one of their top products but not make it work with that product?!?!?!?

Pretty much exactly what I was expecting. I did think the iPhone 2.1 update would be out today, but I can certainly wait a couple of days.

Nice update to the nano and the touch. Camera would have been nice for touch users, but Apple seems to be drawing the line there...

Dropping the 160GB classic was a bit of a surprise, but maybe they will add a new model with that new Toshiba 240GB drive that was announced today.

Nice to see NBC back. Still kind of bugs me to pay for shows I missed on TV and only throw them away after, but that never stopped me before. It's worth the $1.99/$2.99 to see them on the Apple TV. Watching them on the web stinks.

Everyone who was upset, seems to have thought this was more than a music event. No iPhone or computer updates scheduled for today...

Many are frustrated at the fact that Apple seems to have screwed over the iPhone owners to bump sales for iPod Touches. While these new features would've been nice features for the current iPhone owners...it is hard to be dissappointed in this event (what happened was exactly what most expected).

On the other hand, those who are frustrated have every right to show discontent with the company in general. Hopefully if Apple wants to continue to differentiate its products then the iPhone should get new features/upgrades next time.

I am not sure how I feel about a turn by turn GPS unless it can still function while playing music or talking on the phone through a hands-free headset. (I am not sure iPhone hardware is capable.) Otherwise, a dedicated GPS unit sounds much better and they are not that expensive anyways.

Integrated Nike+? New headphones? Not saying these are deal-breakers by any means, it's just the idea that both products are basically the same and one gets hardware upgrades, and the other gets a software upgrade for free. If I owned a Touch I would be frustrated too...

Probably because, as has been stated many times I'm sure, 3G issues don't seem to have anything to do with the iPhone at this point. After multiple tests, it seems to be completely a network issue. What you should be saying is how on earth you keep getting phone bills from AT&T charging you a ton of money for a cellular service that is defective.

Oh and as for turn by turn directions, if you can't figure out where you're going with cellular/wi-fi triangulation and Google maps, then you're hopeless and a funny voice telling you left or right isn't going to help you either.

This event was a joke. There was nothing revolutionary introduced today. Apple has set the bar high for themselves by introducing revolutionary products at there events lately. By holding an event just to introduce these modified products, they are falling under the expectations that they have earned from their prior earth-shattering announcements. They should have kept this low key, and people would be pleasantly surprised at the announcements instead of upset. There was no zing at the end, no wow factor.

I believe there is an issue in which the battery will stop charging when plugged into the power source in a car while GPS is running. The phone autmatically stops charging when it gets too hot, and using GPS while charging does just that, reducing the battery life to a few hours, thereby making the function semi-usless in many real-life situations.

Perhaps the so-called better power management of 2.1 will fix this issue.

I REALLY wish that the back of the iPod Touch would have been made in plastic.

I guess they have to make them [iPhone and iPod Touch] different some how, though, the price is higher on the iPod Touch, so they should at least have a back to it that doesn't scratch as much.

As a company holding such a major press event it's your RESPONSIBILITY to address your clients' issues/concerns - at the very least they could have addressed the "2%" of their client base with faulty hardware!

They did, he said the 2.1. update would fix/reduce dropped calls.

All they care about is selling, selling, and selling more.

Business wants to sell products!! More at 10!!!

Here's to hoping the Android phones and Nokia Tube can bring some class and customer care back to the marketshare.

Hahaha, right. Let us know how that Android handset works out for you, presuming MacRumors still exists when they eventually get to market.

That sucked big time. Where is the cut and paste? MMS? GPS? I NEED GPS.

If turn-by-turn GPS is a deal-breaking feature for you, why did you buy an iPhone when you (presumably) knew it didn't have it and there was no guarantee it ever would?

Huh? Where is the "secret functionality" or new features in 2.1?

Steve did mention "other improvements in functionality" when talking about 2.1: I'd imagine that the update will include all the iPod app changes that they demoed for the Touch, for example. Maybe there will be other stuff too, we'll just have to wait and see.

Many are frustrated at the fact that Apple seems to have screwed over the iPhone owners to bump sales for iPod Touches.

That would presumably be the same people who have been complaining since the launch of the iPhone that the Touch was overpriced and under-featured compared to the iPhone. Just shows you can't please everyone, I suppose.

But wait, he did say that 2.1 would have bug fixes and that apps would no longer crash. For many people, I guess that is "something big" ... ;)

Well, as one of the biggest complainers on here about bugs in 2.0.2, I'd have thought that bug fixes would be a big deal to you. :)

Why am i disappointed, you ask? although this event wasn't focused around the iPhone, Jobs clearly announced what the iPhone's 2.1 software would have: "bug fixes"..i would rather have had him not mention anything about the iPhone so that there would still be some HOPE that there would be new, exciting features for us iPhone users..we now KNOW theres nothing NEW in the update. Theres NOTHING to be souped about for the new firmware update, and THAT, my friends, is the reason i am disappointed.
