Before everyone starts to talk about how disappointed they are - remember Apple doesn't present all the features in these kinds of events. They won't tell you its Cocoa or not, they won't tell you if its got all these new little features in there or not. Same for iPhone 2.1. Just because they omitted saying anything is not an admission that it doesn't exist.
So lets wait until we can get our hands on these products before we start bashing about what isn't there.

All I see is an upgrade to the iPod line-up. There is not much that would provide a 'wow' if your thinking of buying a iPhone. Trageting the iPod Touch as a gaming platform will be interesting, but only if Mac's get more games too, otherwise your platform/product will be uneven.

I gotta think they licensed the Pandora technology for that.
But, since the iPod apparently can do it, then they must have some sort of on-pod method of finding similar music, which might mean only things like BPM+Genre or something, which might not be all that genius.

Good stuff. Just what we were expected.
Anyone disappointed should not get too boiled up in the hype. MacBooks will come soon.

They now want me to pay 2.99 for a 30 minute show in 720p?
Ummm yeah. I buy few shows now at 1.99 unless I really want to support the show. Otherwise I am right back to streaming them off the net for free.
I am thinking .50 for TV shows in SD and .99 for TV shows in HD.

The new Nano is OK, but I feel they went easy on the design by just going back to the old slim Nano (not the fat one). The cool thing is the redesign of the OS and including the accelerometer.

What I dont understand about the Nike+ and iPod Touch is that I thought it was transfered with Bluetooth or somesort of wifi. Does Nike+ use some special transmitting protocol or will this feature also come to the iPhone. As the iPhone has BT I was hoping it would only be a software upgrade.
I really hope that they dont want us to buy a iPod Touch just to use the Nike+ feature.

I doubt they licensed something like Pandora, though it would have been cool. The foundation for a feature like this has existed in the iTMS for a while now. Yea seriously though. I don't get this. Cable/Satellite + DVR = all the recorded shows you can dream of. Only limit is the amount of hard drive space you have.
Then just stream the DVR recordings over a home server and have access to them wherever you go, all without having to take up space on your laptop/ipod/iphone.

The difference is that Pandora works on the actual _content_ of the song. Its not simply a "You like this - you will like this as well" sort of thing. Thats simple (and, to be honest, almost useless).
Pandora finds similar songs based on a ridiculous amount of metrics measured on each song. Things like rhythm, voice, etc.
I seriously doubt, if the Genius feature works like this, Apple wrote it on their own. It took Pandora years to get it right.

I imagine it is because there isn't really a huge need for the 40 GBs at that point. Most anyone who has that much music definitely wouldn't be listening to all of it, nor would they really have the time to. Some extremely basic music management ability should satisfy even the most hardcore of users.
Even 16 GBs is quite a bit of space to store music.
It occurs to me that they might also be interested in holding back a little to ease the transition away from mechanical hard drives. People might be surprised when they dropped a 200 GB product from their lineup and replaced it with, oh, a 64 GB iPod Touch. And most normal consumers don't know why a mechanical hard drive in an iPod can be a pain in the ass.

The difference is that Pandora works on the actual _content_ of the song. Its not simply a "You like this - you will like this as well" sort of thing. [...] It took Pandora years to get it right.
Oh, you won't hear me arguing that point. I love Pandora and I don't expect the 'Genius' feature of iTunes to replace it. I hope it is able to find some more music that Pandora didn't, though, and if it accomplishes at least that much, I'll be happy.
I would love to see Pandora integration.

The genius feature is a good compromise for providing a service similar to Pandora. I like it.
But, they still need to fix the full screen persistence issue with Spaces and add similar functionality to CoverFlow like you have on the iPhone/iPod Touch. In other words, let us flip the album cover and select songs while in full screen mode.
More importantly, leave iTunes in full screen mode if you navigate away using Spaces! Can't tell you how annoying it is for iTunes to be in GUI mode when you return to it.

Yes, NBC Universal is one of the big three networks in the US: the American version of The Office, Battlestar Galactica (NBC Universal owns the SciFi Channel), Heroes, a number of other shows that were major sellers on iTunes before Universal decided to pull out last year.

Did they really think they were going to sell as much online video content with other services??? No way...it was just a matter of time before they saw their numbers drop and wonder why. Good thing I don't work for Apple bc I would have told them to kiss my ***. I won't be purchasing anything from NBC and simply continue to DVR it and burn it for my own use for free. Screw them.

With Remote you can control the iTunes music on your computer or Apple TV from your iPod touch or iPhone. Play, pause, skip, shuffle. See your songs, playlists, and album art. Update to iTunes 8, and you can create a Genius playlist or edit an existing playlist. And do it all on your iPod touch or iPhone as if you were right in front of your computer. This is 40GB of storage that we just lost the option to buy.....I don't know about everyone else, but to me this seems like someone being cheap! Especially with their new HD tv store, and with NBC coming back...we need all the space we can get! I like the grid view in iTunes 8. It lets me listen to just an album without making a playlist first. In list view or coverflow, if you listen to an album, it would move to the next one when it finishes—unless you narrow the list using the search box. Now I can just pick an artist or an album by clicking on it and listen only to that one. It is actually the same option as on your iPod. I always wanted that album view in iTunes!
iTunes 8 is pretty snappy too on my 1Ghz iBook G4. Album artwork seems to load faster. Also in the playlists, they've finally altered the folders to match Leopard folders! It's a small thing, but makes it more at home.
I like this update a lot. To me, it finally feels that the browsing & pick options are complete.

How do I get rid of the Genre column when browsing list view?
This used to be an option in prefs but I don't see it now.
Any column you want to add or remove- right click any column header and select/deselect:

A couple of thoughts.
* CoverFlow is now fast and works properly, very nice.
* If you go to the list view, and click the 'Artwork' disclosure triangle on the top left of the columns you get the old Album View as far as I can see.
* The little arrows that link to the iTunes store now seem impossible to turn off, which is unfortunate.

Well I've just installed the new version of iTunes I really like the new visualizer. The Genius playlist took a while to set up - as it took a while to scan my library. But it seems to be working really well.
The Genius Bar - I'm not too fussed about it - but it might be useful for completing albums etc, and you can always hide it if need be.
I'm just waiting for the Quicktime update to download... *yawn* it's taking a while.

If it doesn't it is pretty much worthless for playlists. I'll withhold judgement until I use it but I don't have any expectations...

iTunes isn't database management software. It's Your Own Personal Wal-Mart. That's the paradigm now: marketing, marketing, marketing.
If you're looking for something as dull as "efficiency with large libraries," you're barking up the wrong lickable tree.

The only way I can play music from Grid view is to double click the album cover, then double click on the song I want to play.

Did Apple disable the option to turn off the link (little arrow within a circle) to the iTunes store for all tracks? It's really annoying, and when I went into my preferences, there was no option to disable it. The last thing I want is a link on every track that I may inadvertently click over, taking me to the iTunes Store in order to buy something I already have in my library.
iTunes 8 doesn't seem to like last.fm at all, which caused the application to freeze at startup until I uninstalled the last.fm client, and the genius feature is going to take another 4 or 5 hours to set up (still on step 1, gathering information about your iTunes library). It's moving, but I suppose when you have 60,000 songs, and another 300 videos, it doesn't move too fast.

Okay, I know it has been said before, but I just had to vent on NBC's decision to come back to iTunes. What a joke!!! Screw them.
Okay I feel better now....thanks.
Yea, isn't that rich? NBC was so stupid to pull all their content from iTunes. Too late to come crawling back, most people are getting NBC's content elsewhere for free now.
NBC wanted flexible pricing --- which is what they got right now.
99 cents for old shows. $1.99 for regular shows. $2.99 for HD content.

What I find interesting is that the Genius destroys the concept of listening to an entire album while at the same time reinforcing the need to buy full albums in order for the similar song feature to work best.

I haven't had the opportunity to try it yet, but I can tell you the step forward that I'd like to see. That is taking things to a truly Pandora like functionality. Sure, make a Genius play list, but every 5 or 10 songs, insert a song from the store that you don't have in your library. Don't just suggest them. You could even have an option for the song to be announced so you can know that this is a song that isn't in your library. That way, if you like it, you can click over to iTunes and buy it immediately. If you don't do that, then maybe the song would be shown in the playlist, but greyed out and if you double click it, then you'd be taken to the store where you could listen to a preview and buy it, if you want.
I just know that I'm somewhat insulated from new music. I listen to what I've got so much that I don't know what's out there. Pandora is great, but the UI is a little hard to work with. When I occasionally hear new music on the radio or on the PA system in a store, I may think 'this is nice, I'd like to have this', but then I don't know who it is to be able to get it. So, in short, I'm always looking for easy ways to expose myself to more music that is in the same ilk as the music that I like.

Welcome back NBC. That was a nice surprise today.
As for iTunes, I think the proof will be in the pudding:
1. Is it less buggy and faster than iTunes 7? If so, iTunes 8 is a huge win.
2. Is Genius really smart and does it really help me find great music I have forgotten in my massive collection or create killer new mixes for me since I don't have the time? If so, Genius will be a killer new feature.
I was worried about Genius for a moment when I finally got sick of the Genius Sidebar but couldn't figure out how to turn it off. I don't want to be pitched music all the time.
Luckily, it's just a button, and now I am very happy about it. If this sidebar makes great recommendations, it will be a welcome feature to help me discover music and continue to build my collection.

(talking about divx in itunes)
and how would i do this?
I don't know how much it's known, I discovered it while ago. You just have to open the file in QuickTime (with perian installed!!) and save it as reference. The reference is small file, something like a link, but with .mov. But you can put this reference file to iTunes - iTunes somehow thinks it's genuine QuickTime movie.
You can't move it to iPod/iPhone, but you can click on "convert to iPod" (or something like this) in iTunes, which converts the file to iPod QuickTime format (but it takes some time).
(I also made an AppleScript that does this automatically)
