View Full Version : Who carries a backup iPod?

So this is my iPod history:

1st iPod: 3G 15GB the one with the nice orange backlit buttons, ended up giving it to my mum when battery life went down a bit. The packaging was awesome btw...
2nd iPod: 512mb shuffle, I got this as the headphones on my first iPod were cracking, so I thought it'd be good to have a backup/USB data key...
3rd iPod: 5G 30GB, this was good, but I was using it with Sennheiser DJ style headphones and wrapping the 6foot extra cabling round the iPod, eventually (and well timed) the headphone socket became loose and only played out of one ear.
4th iPod: 16GB Touch, this was awesome, Jailbroke it and it served the function of a PDA aswell, just one thing was missing, so I sold it for 169.
5th iPod: iPhone 8GB, once O2 reduced the price of the iPhone to 169 I snapped it up, its been awesome, but push email has put battery life right down.

Anyway, all during this time, one iPod has come to always be there for me, when others have run out of power, lost their voice or failed, the shuffle has always come through for me when otherwise I would have to hear the inane ramblings of the tourist on the tube, or the chavette on the bus.
Its not very clever, its a bit clunky now, and if it was a dog it would be that 14 year old mongrel that you grew up with. It won't learn all the new tricks your new dog knows, but you couldn't shoot it for relieving itself on the rug...

Am I alone with this practise? Or do other people keep an old iPod in their bag or pocket incase their main one runs out of battery?

I sort of do...
I leave my Gen3 iPod hardwired in the car and have my iPhone in my pocket as well as my Shuffle in the glovebox with my top 50 songs on it. :D

My current main iPods are a pair of 8GB 3rd gen nanos. Between them they just about hold the important stuff. :)
For backup I have a 2nd gen shuffle, but as it's turned out it gets used far more by my mother when her nano needs charging and there's housework/gardening/sewing to be done. I've also kept my first ever iPod, a 4GB white nano, partly from nostalgia and partly because, hey, I might need it. It has happened that I'm halfway through and quite involved with an audiobook when my nano dies, and the other nano's dead, and I can't be bothered waiting to charge one, and I don't want to sit at my computer playing tetris and listening to it talk to me ... Okay, not often. But, still ...

I did have a 30GB 5.5 gen iPod once, but I sold it to buy a nano and I don't miss it at all.

i mean i guess I would. But i really dont have that much time to listen to my ipod enough in one day/trip/activity to run the battery down that much.

if i was living in the city again, with all my walking, then yes probably. gotta tune out all the weridos!

nothing to do with this thread, but my ipod 5g 30 gb was ruined too because of a sennheiser DJ headphone (I returned it 5 times, and at the end I got the 6g).

I currently use an iPhone 3G.

I had a 20GB iPod photo, and it doesn't work anymore.
I had a 1st generation iPod nano, and I gave it to my friend.
I had a 2nd generation iPod nano, and I gave it to my dad.
I had a 3rd generation iPod nano, and I gave it to my friend.

So, uh, no.

P.S. I didn't buy a bunch of iPod's for no reason, all of them, except for the iPhone, broke. I sent them back and got replacements, except for the Photo, as it's out of warranty.

I can't really vote because...

I usually have both of my iPhones with me with different music on each.

I also have my 160GB iPod with me with ALL my music on it.

I went on vacation last week and brought everything with me including my old 30GB iPod photo.

What's an iPod?

:D

But no, I do not carry a spare, too many gadgets to take note of.

I keep my iPod shuffle 2G with me as a backup in case I desperately need to conserve my iPhone's battery, or it has already run out.

My 5.5 gen ipod will be my backup after I get a new ipod soon.

Backup? Of course. It's in my external hard drive.

I try to make my life easier.
I always carry the cheapest that serves my needs.
4GB 2nd gen nano
I wouldn't get lunatic just because there's something wrong with my iPod..
Even if it dies, 8GB 4th gen for me

Cheers!

i had this exact same problem with my 5G. i didnt have the same pair of headphones though. ive heard many stories about this happening to 5G users. that happened to me a week after the warranty ended.

as for a backup ipod, not really. my computer serves as my backup. im too broke to buy another ipod

I have my Shuffle 2g in my house as my backup just in case something happens to my 5.5G which I am hoping nothing will and am thinking of getting another Shuffle or a new Nano as another backup just in case I need another one.

Does it count?

16GB iPhone 3G user and carry a 4GB iPod nano in my backpack. They both share similar playlists.

At one point I had like 8 backups... now I'm a little lower than that but not by much!

You always need a backup- there have been times when I walked around with over 120 GB in my pants- how about y'all?

Right now I only use my iPhone but I might get a new nano as a backup and for working out.

I carry my 60GB 5th Gen iPod with me in my rucksack all of the time. It rarely gets used, unless my iPhone has run out of juice and I've not had a chance to charge it. It also used to be used whenever I needed a 'real' headphone jack (as opposed to a recessed one).

I carry one once and a while not all the time. I have an iphone, nano and shuffle I always have at least one and depending what I think I may be doing I might bring another because I don't want to break my iphone

I'd watch out getting your iPod out in front of chavettes! They are ferrel animals!

Oh, and I have a 3rd gen iPod 20gb, which has since died, but I must agree, it came in a brilliant box!

Since I got my 16GB iPhone 3G I've been using it as my primary iPod. I leave my trusty 60GB iPod 4G docked in my glovebox and use that in my truck. If the iPhone craps out, my other one is always close by.

When I go to work I take my 160GB classic to listen to in the day, my 60GB photo for playing in the car and my 16GB iPhone.

Not really backups, I just use them for different stuff.

I purchased an iPhone to kill the extra electronics, not add to it. I guess you could call my MacBook a "backup" if you really want to, seeing as it always is with me, but if my iPhone craps the bed, I've got bigger issues than just worrying about where my tunes are coming from. :)

As I mentioned earlier, I carried an iPod nano along with the white iPhone. However, I rarely bring my 7.2MP digicam with me now.
