This is absolutely fantastic - I hope that the website works well and you can actually find things easily when it goes live on Monday.

http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20040117/ap_on_re_eu/britain_wwii_photos

Under the digitalization project announced Saturday, some 5 million Royal Air Force photos of Western Europe will be available to the public on the Web site www.evidenceincamera.co.uk archivists said. The site did not appear to be accessible on Saturday.

D :D

This sounds great and I can't wait to see it. I amcurrently building a system for the DoD which will go live in April that will put the ENTIRE DoD photographic and video catalog online. Full search capabilities will allow you to find those pictures of Patton or McCarthy while the ecommerce engine will allow you to request a 22"x36" poster of the image.

Will post follow up with links when the site comes on line.

Quote from Yahoo - "Undated photo released Friday Jan. 16, 2004, of an aerial view of the June 1944 D-Day landings in Normandy, France, one of a selection of aerial photographs taken by the Royal Air Force (RAF) over Western Europe during World War II, which will be made available online for the first time on Monday Jan. 19, 2004. The photographs are being made available via a website created by The Aerial Reconnaissance Archives (TARA) at Keele University, England. (AP Photo/HO, Aerial Reconnaissance Archives)"

"which will be made available online for the first time on Monday Jan. 19, 2004."

That's friggin awesome! They're also posting some of the German recon that was captured during the war.

When the DoD stuff comes online, post a thread, and PM me if I don't see it.

Thanks,

D

I saw this on TV yesterday, some of these pictures are chilling. They have an aerial photo of the D-day landing of some of the American forces, the pictures showed the soldiers dug in, and even the bodies floating in the water. In the picture of Auschwitz the people could be seen lining up for role call.

Wow... that amazing...

After all this time they go digital.

What great work.

This was undoubtedly a massive undertaking. I can only imagine the work it took to get these shots scanned, retouched & resized for viewing.

This project sounds very similar to the "National World War II Memorial" that will be dedicated on May 29th. I'm a charter member of this organization. A very proud American to assist with my donations to a very worthy cause. I felt that we owe a lot to "The Greatest Generation."

I enrolled my father, mother, father-in-law, and mother-in-law into the registry. They have also collected a lot of pictures from families of WW II veterans.

Wow, that is really nifty.

wdlove: I'm surprised by how many vets didn't want their memorial there in the middle of the Mall. I suppose it's humility at its best.

crenz: I know you know he meant McArthur :P

I'll be very interested to see how this is implemented.

I hope that the images are high resolution enough that they can downloaded or obtained easily for documentary producers like me who specialize in WWII era history. We need more visual elements beyond the same clips and images we see over and over on the History Channel.

Atleast they have a graphical page now displaying the info, and have hidden some links in light yellow on the left.

EDIT: I found one working picture so far.
http://www.evidenceincamera.co.uk/air_2.pop.jpg

EDIT2: And another

http://www.evidenceincamera.co.uk/air_1.pop.jpg

The website loads very quickly now. Must be getting more bandwidth or servers.

Well, the site is up, but the search feature has not been implemented yet. However, they have some great sample images and the other sections of the site seem to have a lot more content.

Reminds me of someone I know. New to computers and her son was helping her out. He told her to move the cursor to the top of the screen, and she picked up the mouse and put it on the monitor. Classic:)
