how to activate 1st gen. iphone so I can get applecare and unlock it after?

I have a 1st gen. referb. iphone and want to unlock it. I know I'll have to activate the phone first so my warranty status will show on apple.com. If I use pwnage, would that activate the phone for me and unlock it too?
