I'm in work so I'll have to wait until I get home to install it, grr.
From looking at that page it doesn't look like there are any new major features other than the genius playlist and repeating sms alerts.
I wonder if they've hidden copy & paste in there somewhere though?

Cripes.....237MB for the iphone software update AND you have to have itunes 8.0 to be able to download it, so that's another 75MB to download. Apple firmly in the bloatware category.
Hopefully this does fix the signal issues. I've had more dropped calls on AT&T with the iPhone since July than I did in five years at Verizon.

just send to [phone number]@vzwpix.net for verizon, and similar things to other networks. I can't remember them exactly, but it works just fine, and you dont get charged since its an email.

Of course, it helps that I get up to 30mbps download speed! :D Heck, I got out of bed 15 minutes ago and in that time I've eaten a bowl of cereal, walked into my den and checked for the iPhone update, downloaded it, installed it, and now my iPhone 3G is backing up and syncing. 2.1 is already installed in less than 10 minutes. :)

Testing the backup speeds now and well not a good sign, the backup got 3/4 of the way in less than 3 minutes (which was great) but now has slowed down to a crawl................and at its current rate, looks like another hour or so
*Edit*..........AWESOME!!! after getting "stuck" 3/4 of the way through for a few minutes, iphone shook it off and finished the backup so the total backup was completed in about 12 minutes. Prior to this, my backups would take several hours, forcing me to run backups overnight while i slept.

I just finished downloading and updating the firmware in a mere 20 minutes or so. Will backup tonight, but so far, so good... everything seems more responsive ... interesting to see if anyone has downloaded and installed any apps directly on the phone (I'm afraid to at this point without having my computer near me since this is what caused my crashing out and poor syncing last time).

Nearly done! 50% backup after the update, firmware too which i dont think happened with 2.0.1 and 2.0.2 and it needed to re-activate which i dont remember before either
Now up to 75% - hurry up i want to play!

I like this feature. Given all of my e-mail accounts, web site logins, etc. that are on this phone, if someone is trying to break into my phone I absolutely want all of the data wiped.
After all, now that backups are supposedly faster, if the wipe was by accident is should be an easy restore to get everything back on there.

Completed the download and install on my 3g iphone.
Testing the backup speeds now and well not a good sign, the backup got 3/4 of the way in less than 3 minutes (which was great) but now has slowed down to a crawl................and at its current rate, looks like another hour or so
After it's done, do one more sync to see how fast it will be. Maybe the initial sync with 2.1 is more of a full while subsequent ones are incremental? One can only hope...

I think Apple will now focus on new features as the push notification and perhaps MMS etc. I guess they wanted those features in 2.1 but with all the problems that the iPhone 3G had, they had to make 2.1 a pure bug fix release. Not much new in there actually.
So lets hope that they will soon give us a nice new feature update.

I wish they added something on the other end of the spectrum where it won't disable your phone and make you sync it with iTunes to reenable it. I like having a passcode on my iPhone to keep people from seeing my stuff, but my 12 year old sister likes to guess passwords, and would have disabled it a couple times already if I haven't grabbed it from her after guessing it like 4 times.
Remember, both of these options would be optional ;)

Ditto this. At&t's/apple's implementation is horrible. You can't receive them, have to use att's stupid login combinations - which you can't click on your sms you received telling you that you have one, att's site rarely loads in decent time - if at all, and you can't save or download the pics you receive.
There's no excuse for apple being negligent with this... or continuing to delay implementation of this and c&p - both of which every other pda can handle with ease. Hell, if MS can do it without a glitch...
Also, one should be able to postpone calendar alerts - to remind a little later.
This system is a poor excuse for MMS. I know, I *attempt* to use it quite frequently. It works some of the time and when it does work, it takes forever to send.

Yes, THIS is new, and a much called for addition by businesses. Though I'd like the ability to lower the threshold from 10.
And, yeah, dagnabit, I'm at work, too, and can't upgrade till this afternoon!
Put the wwrong password in as many times as you want - for instance - you want to wipe after 3 times, put the wrong password 7 times in a row!

Email the image to their phone number. 1xxxxxxxxxx@wireless.att.com or something like that. And each carrier has a different @_.com address (t-mobile is tmomail.net)
MOST mobile phone providers in the world lock this out. You can send an MMS to an email address, but if you reply to the MMS email (like telephonenumber@company.com) the email to MMS never reaches its end.

Still playing with the new firmware.....but I do miss the 3g box as well. However I did notice that 3g now gives me 5 bars in my apartment, where it previously gave 1-3. When I go to field test, the radio signal is still the same as before the update. Sooooooooooooooooo.....did they boost the signal bars even though you still get the same radio reception? Seems like it.

The update only took ~10 minutes.
I now have 4-5 bars in my home here in Norman, OK. Used to only get 1-2. Everything seems to be in good order. No lag yet. Seems Apple did a good job here. We will see in a few days I guess as more people get it and test it out.

Hells Bells, that was a fast install!! less than 10 mins.
3G at my house gone from 1 bar to 4/5.
Contacts lag nearly gone.
Safari seems to launch quicker.
Back up took less than a minute.
Looking positive at the moment. I guess us beta testers will soon find niggles. LOL :)

after you install everything, the backing up process is supposed to suck only for the first time right?

Just installed 2.1 and my 3G signal at home (West Los Angeles) is now at 5 bars. I used to only get 1 bar before and would switch to Edge while at home. So far so good.
Anyone know if EDGE is improved? I still have iPhone Classic and have experienced a terrible signal at my apartment (which is just a mile off of I-40 in Raleigh and less than a mile from the N.C. State campus...wtf?)

I noticed this in the settings<about
under network it went from just ATT to ATT 2.6 (I'm in an EDGE area at the moment)

Try it in DFU mode. Make sure it's backed up though as in DFU mode it will get wiped.

So, do you need to resync your whole library after the update? Some updates before required it, others didn't, and my PB doesn't have USB 2.0 (so resyncing takes a while).

From the release notes: "Improves accuracy of 3G reception indicator" (or something like that).

Same results here. Went from 0-1 bars of reception to 4-5 bars. Data speed appears to taken a significant jump. Previously it did, on average, 350kbps. Now it does anywhere between 450 and 700 kbps from the same spot. Very nice!
Oh, and apps install in a fraction of the time it used to take. HUGE bonus if you're a dev.

It means you're using GPRS not EDGE or 3G right now.
