Dumb question may be: Transfer contacts to new iphone

I just got another iphone, the first generation, not 3G.
How do I transfer all my iphone contacts to the new one, including picture ID associated with the contact?

I add new contact phone#s directly to my 1st iphone, not thru outlook sync.
I always thought the syncing is one way from computer to iphone, not the other way around, am I incorrect?

Syncing should be bidirectional.
