according to the BossTeam it does indeed work but installed 3rd party apps wont show up on the springboard which makes the whole thing kinda pointless

to fix the problem with the applications not showing up, you have to download the program from cydia called "delcache" and well...delete the cache and your apps are supposed to show up on springboard now :)

I have also heard that there are a few apps that don't work correctly, like Categories. Can you confirm?

I've just gone through this. I upgraded to 2.1 on my Mac and used a windows laptop with iTunes 7.7.0 to do the actual jailbreak.
The following apps are working fine:
BossPrefs
5 Icon Dock
Winterboard
Analogue Charger
SpoofApp
DelCache
and most importantly, Intelliscreen

The patched mobileinstallation is not an application. You need to replace the one on the iPhone with the patched version.

Apps sync fine as long as u update back to itunes 8 after your done with the jailbreak. Iphone works as normal. However Cydia and Installer seem a little buggy still. Winterboard randomly act's up also and won't change theme without a reboot at times.

Just delete the itunes library file. You can also save it off and replace it if and when you upgrade to version 8.
TotalCommander should work fine once iTunes is running.

I used a coworker's Windows computer that hadn't been upgraded to iTunes 8 yet (I'm running iTunes 8 on my Mac). Worked just fine. Just did a snazzy 15 second backup.
If you use Categories, or another app that hides icons or puts them in folders:
Unhide everything and place it on Springboard normally before you upgrade to 2.1. Categories (and I assume some others) aren't updated yet, and won't be there when you rejailbreak on 2.1.
If you forgot and have hidden icons:
Install Poof from Cydia and then Cachedel. When the springboard restarts after installing Cachedel you should now see Poof. Switch the hidden icons from off to on to make the visible again.

well, I am happy to report that the T-Zones hack is still working after the upgrade, as well as my unlock.
So, for right now I can live without the jailbreak, I have my ipod, my phone and my internet! (and not to mention my numerical battery from BossPrefs has also stayed with me after the update, an absolute bonus!)

Hello everyone...
Guys, i have a 2g iphone and when i used the GUI, everything went ok until the cmos window terminated (when doing procedure 5 i think) and i got stuck with a pineapple on my iphone's screen? Should i start over the whole thing?
EDIT: Done it over and the GUI crashes in the end of the 5th operation... Any ideas?
EDIT2: Ok, I tried it 3 times more and it worked... but now the iphone is stuck with the apple logo in the screen and the "loading" circle in front of the apple logo, it moves a little but then stops and does nothing more!!!! PLEASE HELP....:(
EDIT3: Ok... I managed to restore my iphone (by connecting to itunes while pressing the HOME button down) and now i will be trying to jailbreak it (once again)...

i did the above procedure and was unsuccessful at first... then tried this one.
http://www.quickpwn.com/2008/09/jailbreak-iphone-21.html
which is almost the same but uses diskaid instead. i was able to jailbreak and found my cydia and installer after manually deleting the cache that has mobile installation on it.
I lost the apple or pineapple logo which usually shows up when you reboot the phone. its just blank now. cydia seems a bit slow as well as the installer but otherwise, everything seems fine.
thanks!:apple:

The jailbreak went fine for me (on a locked 3G phone) other than the fact that I had to set my phone up as a new phone and not restore from backup. Restoring from backup was giving me the "spinning wheel of death" when trying to boot up. I was able to finally (after two restores and backup-restores) able to jailbreak by just setting the phone up as new instead. Worked fine!

Is there any way i can manually restore them to being visible, obviously i can't use poof as i can't get at Cydia, Help Please!!!

I think you'll have to edit the plist files manually to reveal the icons, delete the cache manually, and reboot -- and they should show up.
Try reading near the bottom of this page for directions on where to look to edit the plist files....
http://www.iphonealley.com/tips-and-tricks/instantly-hide-unhide-iphone-applications
If you use TotalCommander (or whichever program you used to browse the file system and replace Mobileinstallation) to bring the required plist files over to your PC, edit them, and send them back you should be fine...

Just curious but do I have to use iTunes 8 to update to 2.1? I have 7.7.1 installed already and have been using it. I don't want to update to 8.0 then have to uninstall and downgrade back down if I don't have to.
P.S. - iTunes 7.7.1 came up with the 2.1 firmware update notice and won't allow me to sync until it is done... :(

Hi
Please pardon if this is a well discussed question. I tried looking but didn't find anything so please direct me to where I can get some answers. Thanks.
The question: I have a iPhone 3G 2.1 and iTunes 8 on a mac. I've downloaded both Pwnage Tool and QuickPwn from the dev team. But I have no clue what to do next? Could anyone guide me to the steps to jailbreak my iPhone 3G on a mac. This thread states for Windows. I've never done this before.

Author: BigBoss // Category: jailbreak
While I posted a series of steps on how to jailbreak 2.1, I recommend strongly that you all hold off. There are many issues that dev team is working through. A jailbreak isn’t quite enough.
Many apps are not yet stable. Categories will not work because we cannot launch one app from another at this time. Cydia is not yet stable. I recommend you wait a day or two still.

Bah! I want the new 2.1 firmware more than I need a jailbreak right now. I have already gone ahead and done a restore (Shift+Restore route) and updated to 2.1. Everything is working alot better now. Better performance, better signal, and better battery life. I'll wait for the devs to release a windows quickpwn that works with iTunes 8.

Confirmed and working.
Just follow the instructions AS IS.
Its a lil confusing but was super easy.Took me less then 30 min total time, less downloading, but i downloaded all files last night and started today.
Cydia works.
Im just awaiting the new updates for winter board before installing.
Jailbroken 3g Iphone White
Cons though the only reason i want to jail break is to use winterboard since i want to design themes. Downside is i lost a few bars, maybe 1 and im testing 3g and it doesnt seem as fast.
Though the question is do i reugrade back ITUNES 8? cuz he never stated to reupdate. and using 7.7 wont let you use 3g i phone, i get an error.

I agree. 2g 2.0.2 jb -> 2.1 jb here
everything worked fine. use the software he provided, i assume it wasn't ssh but just usb?
PLEASE FOLLOW THE STEPS exactly, then you will be fine
and for itunes, after you finished the jb business with 7.7, just click on itunes8 installer and then you are back in business, syncing everything works fine
warning: if you downgrade to 7.7, dont try to import any music. Last time i did it i messed up my library completely, causing me to reimport everything i have when i reinstalled itunes 8. if you are already with itunes 8, follow the step, downgrade, after done, reupgrade, your library will be still intact.

Is anyone else having this problem? Any idea how to solve it?Not sure what caused this, but I fixed it. I did two things so I'll tell you all both of them, but I think only the second one fixed it.
First, I went into itunes, clicked "Store->Authorize Computer" and authorized (again?). This did not fix the problem.
I then updated an appstore app (one that happened to need updating). This fixed all apps, and they now load. I'd imagine that downloading a new (free) app would also fix the issue if you don't have an app that happens to need updating.
Again, I'm not sure what caused this and I don't know why it's fixed, but those are the steps I took. I doubt that the authorization helped at all, but in case it did, I mentioned it.

that is because you keep the "custom boot logo" checked. there is a bug in quickpwn that if you choose to update the logo, it leaves it blank. if you unchecked that checkbox in quickpwn, you would retain the apple boot logo.
i made the same mistake. you can't fix it unless you create a new firmware using a winpwn or a new quickpwn program

After quickpwn ran, my 2g phone started to reset. However, it never loaded back up again. It is stuck at the loading screen with the apple, with the busy symbol spinning. Resetting it puts it right back into this state. I can not get out of it.
a little help

Do I have to restore the iPhone to its original settings before I jailbreak?
Ok I now have a fully restored 3G iPhone 2.1 - I am in the UK on the 02 network (obviously) - I'm going to try and jailbreak it using the instructions at the top of this thread.
I'll document it fully to let you know how I get on....

Ok so i've pwned it and it works! Followed instructions down to the tee and it works perfectly... my only concern is that it took AGES to connect to the 3G network after the final reboot... not sure what thats about... probably just the massive flux of iphones constant appearing on the 02 network in central london!
Will continue testing and let you know how it goes...
btw im using vista business sp1

Nothing major as still seems to work fine but when I accessed installer it told me it was out of date and required an update - and then said "error url not found"... still seems to work ok though...
Ha - after saying that went to view an application called "kate" and its totally crashed... hmmm.....

The phone never boots up to a state in which diskaid can detect and connect to it. I had about 20ish applications installed.
Last night I let it sit for several hours with the apple logo and loading icon. Nothing ever happened.

Okay - How hard is it for someone to just post a link to an already compiled Custom firmware so people can just DFU their phones and restore the firmware via iTunes 7.7? Why are we making people run and jump through hoops..
You can run and jump through hoops all you want if you need custom boot logos and what not or want to have a few apps pre-installed. I'll post up my custom firmware when I find a place to upload it to.
You guys KILL me with this crap...

If I've never pwned my iphone 3g before can I create a custom ISPW and then put the phone in DFU mode and restore in itunes with the custom firmware... or does pwnage need to do something to the phone first in order make it able to install a custom firmware?

People like making everybody "believe" there's something "real" going on in Pwnage that allows iTunes to restore custom firmware but this is not true.. all Pwnage is doing is shutting down the itunes services so that you don't have to.. in fact, i've left them running before and was still able to install a custom firmware file through iTunes. I'm not saying Pwnage is a waste of time, they allow the magic to happen by creating the custom IPSW firmware for you..
That being said, if you were able to download someone elses created firmware all you need to do is put your phone info DFU mode, close down iTunes, restart the Apple Mobile device service and open iTunes back up and it will detect that your phone is in restore mode... then select your custom firmware and there you go, you have a jailbroken iPhone.
This eliminates the need for quickown/pwnage all together.

The reason I used this method is because trying to Shift + Restore from DFU mode did not work. On two different computers, holding shift and clicking restore does not bring up the browse window. There are other people running into this on other threads as well. As a result I opted to jump through the hoops on this one and they worked. So for that I'm thankful. :)

Do I need to switch off my iPhone (3G) before i run quickpwn? And my iTunes 7.7 keep saying that the library was created in a newer version of iTunes and refuse to open and when i run quickpwn it says "Hashing IPSW" and then windows says "quickpwn.exe has stopped working". Is it because my OS is vista?
Any idea how to solve these problems?
Thanks in advance :)

You can't. You updated the phone without using a custom IPSW, which then updated your baseband rendering a software unlock impossible for the near future.
