Question about restoring a backup to a new firmware

I have 2.0.2 and I'm backing up my phone and I'm going to restore a custom 2.1. When I asked if I want to restore from a back up can I restore the backup I'm making now So I don't have to redownload all my Cydia apps? This may be a stupid question but I just thought I'd ask.

I always restore from my most recent backup, though I've seen some recommend against this. I haven't seen any problems from it. And no, it won't back up your cydia stuff.

I've had problems in the past (lingering "Other" space in use as an example). I've got things down to such a routine that I just do a clean install each time.
