So is there any way to have an alarm that, if while the iphone is in silent mode, won't actually ring but just vibrate?

No. I could see that it could have some uses but it could also probably easily confuse most people which is why, I guess, Apple has steered clear of it. If you set an alarm, it should act like an alarm.

If i put the phone in silent mode, it should be silent.
The phone won't make an audible ring when it silent mode. How is a vibrating alarm more confusing than a vibrating ring?

...Oh yes, that's because you forgot to check your silent switch. Every phone I have ever owned has worked this way.

my old phone's alarm went silent while in silent mode.
Honestly it's pretty simple, the alarms with a snooze are clearly meant to wake you up, so those should always go off. the ones without a snooze clearly aren't meant as wake up alarms, just as casual reminders, therefore, if you want a silent phone, those alarms should give you a silent reminder.
simple as that.
