View Full Version : 5400 HD on new 17" PB

my new 1.33 17" is a bit slow at certain things. I was going to go out and buy an external HD for storage, when someone suggested I buy a 7200 HD for my PB, and put the 5400 in casing and use it as an external HD.
How realistic is this and will it help with speed that much?

I've got a 7200 RPM hard drive in my PC laptop, and the difference is absolutely amazing. It blows my mind why Apple doesn't offer this as an option... :rolleyes:

Yeah, that's exactly what I'm going to do with my internal HD. I've already bought a cute little bus-powered 2.5 inch HD case to put my internal drive in. Go to xlr8yourmac.com (http://www.xlr8yourmac.com) and look at the speed comparisons. Amazing difference! That Hitachi 7200rpm drive looks brilliant.
Nearly x2 faster in certain things than the 4200rpm drives.
My only worry is whether it will get rediculously hot or not.:(

Put your old drive in a mini enclosure from these guys: www.macally.com I've got their 2.5 inch Firewire/USB2.0 enclosure and it's very nice.

Similar arguments are made for the firmware update with the superdrive, with regards to issues of burning at 16x being too hot for the powerbook G4 Titanium.

I would love a 7200rpm drive in my TiBook but would be worried about the head emissions.

yeah, that only time worry about heat is when i recharge my battery. whenever i recharge my battery i feel like i am going to free and egg on my laptop.

don't worry. i replaced my tibook 667's stock 4200rpm hard drive with the hitachi 7k60 model and was amazed how much COOLER the new 7200rpm drive was than the older 4200rpm drive. before the change the cooling fan was on really often, but now it hardly ever operates.

That's great to hear! Now I'm definitely getting that drive!
