MACBOOK

Last year, I repaired a bad inverter on my MacBook. I only reason I knew this was because the screen would haywire under physical conditions- namely, when I would adjust the screen angle. So, in order to get my MB to work, I had to adjust my screen to a sweet spot. Over time, it it got worse as I zeroed in on the inverter. (In case you didn't know, the inverter is built into the hinge on a MacBook.) It nailed it when I discovered that when I tapped on the hinge and it would flicker...

Using a manual I found at crf , I opened it it up. Now Apple would simply replace the part, but me- I always think in terms of "I can't break it anymore than it already is" so I took off the orange plastic.

See those dark coils of copper in the image? Well, those coils were frayed and little hair-thin wires were touching from coil to coil, bridging the circuit and causing it to short. It made perfect sense to comb the wires back into shape with some fine tip tweezers and dab some super glue on it.

I was very lucky, because if I couldn't tap on it and get it to flicker, I wouldn't have known where to start looking. The average person doesn't wake up and say "hmmm, my screen is white- the inverter's bad". No, in fact, the average Apple users are dummies when it comes to hardware. They're not used to having problems- which is part of the reason I'm having trouble finding a solution to this...

iBook G4.
So an iBook falls on my lap with a mysterious history. It has display problems, but I can't seem to reproduce them. In fact, I'm writing to you from the machine. I've slapped it around a few times but I get nothing (the inverter is securely locked in under the bezel).

My boss says the screen goes to intense WHITE SCREEN and has 3 vertical lines. I want to say diagnose it as a video inverter and give it back to my boss, but I want to be sure.
QUESTIONS, QUESTIONS, QUESTIONS!
1) If an inverter goes bad, the screen will still stay on and display white because the LCD backlight is still going, but there is not recieving a signal, yes?

2) Is there a software that that will help me diagnose an inverter problem?

3) Without a surplus of parts, how do you know if it's a bad inverter or bad cable?
