In general, how much hard-drive space is taken on an iMac for the OS and other pre-installed software? For example, for the 250GB drives, how much is actually useable?

A OS install w/ software is about 11GB +- 5GB depending if you install printer drivers, languages, xcode etc.

A 250GB drive is actually 232GiB, then 6GB-16GB for the total space for OS X.

So it will leave you with about 216GB.
