View Full Version : Limited Run of 4GB iPod Nanos?

[Via Engadget (http://www.engadget.com/2008/09/17/mysterious-new-4gb-ipod-nano-4gs-begin-appearing-on-store-shelve/)

According to two separate tipsters (with two sets of photos) Apple has released a third version of the new multi-hued iPod nano to the world -- a 4GB model. As there's been no announcement from the company, and there was certainly no mention of it at the 'Let's Rock' event, this is quite a head-scratcher. According to sources (and a Dutch retailer's site), the models are available in all nine colors and are priced at €119 (or about $168) -- though there seems to be some debate as to whether these lower capacity versions are limited editions or simply an incredible gaffe on Apple's part.

There is also an image of a pink one
http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/09/nano4g_4gb.jpg

I think this is cool, but why would they bother? I mean 4gb is pretty small these days, and the price difference isn't that big. Maybe they're just getting rid of all the left over 4gb flash they had lying around :D

Engadget publishes (http://www.engadget.com/2008/09/17/mysterious-new-4gb-ipod-nano-4gs-begin-appearing-on-store-shelve/#comments) photos of what appears to be a 4GB iPod Nano available at a Dutch retailer (http://www.a-mac.nl/amac/component/page,shop.product_details/category_id,37/flypage,shop.flypage/product_id,609/option,com_virtuemart/index.php?page=shop.product_details&category_id=37&flypage=shop.flypage&product_id=609&option=com_virtuemart&vmcchk=1) for €119. Additional photos have been posted to OneMoreThing.nl (http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.onemorething.nl%2F%3Fp%3Dshowarticle%26art_id%3D3556&sl=nl&tl=en&hl=en&ie=UTF-8).

The model is reportedly a limited run and no further inventory will be available. One report (http://translate.google.ch/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.cyberbloc.de%2Findex.php%3F%2Fsite%2Fv3_comments%2Fproduktionsfehlplanu ng_bei_cyberport_erhaeltlich%2F&hl=de&ie=UTF-8&sl=de&tl=en) claims that originally 4GB models were planned and that a limited number had already been produced.

what's kinda weird is price point. 4GB iPod nano 119 Euros = 169 USD --> and the new 8GB iPod nano is 149 !??!

i think its a misprint of the price, if so i would guess it should be 99 USD. that would be so cooool! :)

however, this may well be a some graphic designer photoshoping the image to 4GB :p

No, the Dutch site has 4GB for € 119,00 and 8GB for € 139,00. I believe the EURO has an exchange rate around .71 to USD which may be different with US bank problems today.

I felt Apple was going to lower Nanos to $99 for 4GB, but that didn't materialize. However it seems they might have had that concept in mind and rescinded the order.

I thought they would want iPTs starting at $199 to get more people into Apps. Too bad. My suspicion is that the price of materials is still too expensive to accommodate that price structuring.

agreed the dutch website has these numbers.

just for food of thought, i think it would make sense if Apple releases them in US for lower prices as per my suggested numbers. this will fill the gap between the 69$ iPod shuffle (2GB) and the 149$ (8GB) nano

How about $1419 for a low end MacBook?
That's what we pay for them in Europe (999 euros including VAT).

so 119 euros would actually be quite cheap for 4 GB nano

This has very little to do with the US economy or anything else other than the fact that Apple equipment is inherently more expensive in Europe. No matter where you go. The 8GB Nano here in Poland is $224 and we are one the most expensive places to go shopping for Apple stuff.

Nevertheless I woulnd't mind having one of those babies just for the special feeling of having the iPod with the lowest occurence in the iPod world.

Cheers!

Don't know what "internal checker" you're using, but apple.com/support shows it's in warranty until October 15, 2009 (more than a year away) so they weren't expecting these to be sold until October this year, or that's not the right serial number and the iPod it references has AppleCare.

On "cheap" items, to Apple it's $1 = 1 EUR. They only recently started to adapt the pricing on computers.

The german sotre has the 8 GB nano for 149 EUR and the 16 GB for 199 EUR, including the 19% sales tax which is not included in the US online store.

I would believe that they were either using up the leftover 4GB flash ram or they started ramping up production for 4GB and decided against it so they're selling off what little where produced. Either way it would be cool to have one of these as a collectible.

Exactly what I expected as well - a 4GB nano for between $99 and $129.

Maybe Apple couldn't manage to get the margins up to suitable levels after the first few manufacturing runs. Maybe it saw the demand for the 4GB limited in the face of the 8/16GB models, or the flip side, the demand for the 4GB nano destroyed the demand for the 8GB model and they'd rather have slightly fewer sales at higher margins (given the crappy economy).

cheap or not-cheap, any item(s) sold on the Apple online store does include a sales tax when you completely go through the process of purchasing the item(s). the tax rate depends on the state that we are purchasing the item(s) from.

Gizmodo is running article claiming that a source from Apple has confirmed:

http://gizmodo.com/5051221/apple-confirms-4gb-nano

Following the appearance of mysterious images this morning, Apple has apparently confirmed the existence of a new 4GB nano. Speaking with an Apple spokeswoman, Reg Hardware discovered that the company made a “limited number of 4GB iPod nanos for some international markets." Just how many were shipped out and to what countries specifically remains a mystery. Whether this is some sort of test market for a wider launch is also unknown at this time.

No, no, I mean people buying Apple stuff for cheap because of the low Dollar against our Euro, and because Apple is selling their stuff relatively expensive here. That's not why they check your bags, of couse: it's because you have to declare items when they're over a 250 Euro's, to pay taxes. Of course nobody does that, hence the checks.

I'm actually glad the USA won't get the 4 GB version of the 4G nano--it doesn't make sense considering that TV shows can hog hundreds of megabytes of on-player storage just for a single 42-minute episode! Besides, if you can get the Creative ZEN portable music player for US$179.99 for the 16 GB model, Apple needs to make sure they offer a 16 GB nano at a competitive price, too.

I don't remember if it was here or not, but I saw it discussed somewhere that the 4GB model was originally planned but was dropped for the 16 GB so Apple could directly compete with Microsoft, who shipped new versions of its Zune players with 8GB at $149 and 16GB at $199. Sound familiar?

This might have been muted elsewhere, but just noticed the pricepoint of the 4gb is £95 - exactly the Back to School UK rebate. Seems quite clear from that, as the offer has always been a free ipod, that dropping the 4gb was a genuinely late decision, with the UK promo originally going to be a free 4gb, rather than still leaving £14 to pay for an 8gb.
