I'm not sure if this has been asked already, but is it still possible to use a friend's old iPhone to escape the early upgrade fee from ATT to upgrade to the 3G for $199 and $299? Or was the ATT policy changed?

My understanding is, the discounted price doesn't come with an upgrade from the iphone itself it comes with an upgrade on the iPhone service plan.

So it depends on what plan you currently have, and what your upgrade situation is.
It's not something where you walk in and show the old phone and they give you the discount. It all depends on what the computer says you are eligible for.

But check with AT&T they could tell you for sure.

I didn't quite mean that, I didn't expect to literally swap it in for a new one, i meant, does activating a plan for the old one make you eligible for an upgrade to 3G? I signed for 2 years with a blackjack in Feb. and now i'm hoping i can activate an iPhone plan for an old iPhone to reset my eligibility to get a 3G.
Basically, new phone-->old iPhone plan w/ old iPhone---> 3G?

I think you can, but you have to completely renew the contract meaning you start at the 2 year marker again..... You should ask though. If you can check your online account, it should tell you if your eligible.

well, I was asking because I haven't activated the old iPhone yet, and i didn't want to get charged an early termination fee to upgrade to 3G in case the old trick didn't work. Plus, the old iPhone is still being used by my friend, so i didn't want to mess up his contract. Are we allowed to link to previous posts? Because I'm referring to an old post's method. They just haven't said if it still works
