it sounds sexual, but i mean like. i have a hard clear case on my phone now, but i feel it takes away from the feel of the phone. I bought a front crystal film cover from apple, but im worried about the back.
the thing is. i always get a new phone every year, so if apple comes out with a new one in summer ill def. be getting it.
also im very careful with it, so im not sure i would drop it.
what should i do?
should i order a back cover skin for the phone?

Ive got a 3G White, been naked ever since launch, no scratches whatsoever.
If, like you say you are careful with it, you'll be fine, stop worrying and enjoy the phone in all its nakedness!!!!:D

Why not just put a skin on it. Barely noticeable on a white iPHone.

mine has been naked since launch week . few scratches on the back from my clumsiness and drops but the screen is still flawless, i even left my first gen iphone naked at all times and the screens never got noticeable scratches.

I was naked since launch, but have since fell in love with the whole series of SwitchEasy cases. So now i just alternate between all of them and naked when im home. Depending on my moods i switch them out and also where im going for the day. if i want less bulk but protection ill use the Switcheasy colors. If im going out where i know ill be using it often or laying it down or outdoor activities ill use the capsule rebel or capsule neo. Mostly when im at home i leave it naked to be able to dock it. I rock the bestskinsever full shield.

I have yet to meet a person who has not ever dropped their phone. One of the clip-on back protectors would probably be your best bet. They are thin and don't take up much room, but it'll give the back enough protection from scratches and the inevitable drop.

I've had my iPhone slip out of my breast pocket and skid across a bathroom floor. 0 scratches.
Trust me, there's a reason why the stereotypical test for a diamond is to see if it can scratch glass. And the iPhone front is glass.

after buying three 3G cases, i've decided to go naked. i just hate cases. i do have a crystal film on the front. i never used a case for my 1st gen, and i couldn't deal with one on the 3G. i have some iPod socks that i slide it in every now and then, but for the most part, she's buck naked.
CASES SUCK.
(the one and only case i would ever still use, like if i went camping or something, is the Power Support Air Jacket. you can barely tell it's there)

I think I might get a back film cover but idk which to choose. I don't want one that turns yellows.

I gave up being over protective with devices a long time ago, when I had my iPod 5G Video. Just enjoy the device as intended. Skins may be cool initially, but when the edges inevitably begin to peel and dirt gets into the sides, you find yourself removing it anyway.
Cases are even more pointless. If you bought a Ferrari, would you put a rubber body kit on it?

Yes, if you need advice then asking people who may have valuable experiences to share is one of the most stupid things you can do.

I tried to rock a case on my white 3G, and I just couldn't do it.
Removing the case revealed it had scratched the phone more than being in my pocket ever could.
Screw the case man. Maybe rock a clear film or whatever, but I personally don't think a case is worth the extra size, weight and ugliness.

i have dropped my iphone a couple of times and i was rocking a BSE On the back, and it still managed to dent it a couple of times with a couple of scratches on the front too. I have replaced my iphone (dead pixels) and have decided to stick ti in a incase Slider. the slider looks very good in my opinion and it will protect my iphone from drops and stuff so when i do sell it when the new iphone comes out it will be scratch/dent free. and to the person who said would you put a rubber case on a Ferrari.. seriously, totally not the right analogy

I keep my phone case-less, and screen protector-less. I'm very happy thus far. I rather keep it this way and actually enjoy it.

Anyone go naked with an original (Aluminum) iPhone? I have the Eco Shield Case which actually doesn't add a lot of bulk or weight, but I love the feel/size of the caseless phone.

I've always used my phones case-less and holster-less. They always do more damage than good, dirt or whatever always gets in between the case and phone.. which rubs the paint and scratches it. :(

I use an Agent18 Eco Shield and quite honestly hate it. I really want something that shows off my iPhone's beauty. And I think I may just get a crystal shield and go naked. Still up in the air about it though.
Any cases that are really good looking but provide some protection as well?

so whats the low down of peoples iPhone screens (NOT the back casing!) getting scratched after certain period of time, say a month?
a few people have commented on the first page about how their screen has not scratched going naked. but thats probably the nature of this thread. so whos glass screen has been scratched going naked, and whos doesnt have scratch at all?

I will definitely keep using a screen protector. Before i got my replacement 3g, my other one had stuck pixels. But i scratched it without a protector, and that was cleaning the screen with the apple cleaning cloth. My guess is that some sort of grit was on the cloth :(.
But this replacement, it will always be protected by a screen protector.

I decided to ditch the case when I got my 3G.
I never dropped my Edge phone, and only dropped my 3G once... the screen is shattered. It's probably the worst I've seen of shattered screens, but I can't afford to get it replaced. Of course, the back still doesn't have any scratches! :)
I regret not putting a case on it. When I do have the money to replace the screen (which probably won't be until next summer...) I won't hesitate to put a case on there.

Like Mikey B said, the inCase slider was the culprit. I had more of a problem with the chrome getting stratched than the (white) back of my iPhone, though.
I've seen ads for a new "super thin" hard plastic case, which I guess is up my alley - but I think I'm over hard cases. If I'm ever in an Apple store in the near future, I may considering getting a protective film or something ... but this phone is just too nice to look at / hold / use the way it is!

Since most cases don't cover the screen, do you think if you had a case on, the screen wouldn't have shattered? How did it land?
I'm just curious. I had my phone naked for a few hours here at work yesterday. NAKED IN THE OFFICE!! Cleaned it all up. I really don't want the case on it. I don't care about scratches, i care about the screen shattering if i drop it.
Edit: I suppose i'm concerned of a dent too. If there is a problem with the phone, i don't want Apple blaming it on a tiny dent.

I never use a case and mine is relatively scratch-free. I just like to see the beauty of my iPhone, plus the things are pretty heavy duty so I would not worry about it too much. It really is a personal choice though so try it with and try it without you might like that case more, who knows?

It just dropped screen down, but it was on concrete. I also didn't care about scratches - it's just a phone! - and since I have been careful with my phone, I never thought that if I dropped it once that the screen would shatter. I do think that if I had a case on, it may have helped, but who knows. The cases I was looking at buying would have all stuck out a little bit from the screen, so that alone may have prevented it from shattering. There's no use asking "what if" since the damage has already been done, but I think there's a high possibility it might not have shattered had there been a case. From what I hear, though, the phone is usually incredibly durable, even when dropped, so this may have just been a freak occurrence. Next time, I won't take the chance, though.

Naked is always good, and the rubber is simply for protection, though some prefer latex. You could always just put it in a sock. Protection is a good thing!

I hate how many cases ruin the aesthetics of the phone, or even worse, get in the way of my fingers accessing the touch screen (like many leather cases).
However, I need something there to protect the phone from drops. Drops happen, almost to everyone. Most likely, you WILL drop your iPhone one day. It may survive, it may crack. Do you want to take the chance? Plus the 3G has a pretty slippery surface, especially once it accumulates some skin oils.
I tried one of those rubberized gel covers from AT&T for a while. Worked okay but felt cheap and trapped dirt.
I just got a Seidio Innocase II Surface in black. Love it. The case is hard, thin, fits tightly, looks good, and has a rubberized surface.
I do not use a screen protector. IMO the glass is sufficiently resistant to scratches, as long as you don't put anything else in the same pocket with the phone. I just want to protect it from drops primarily. The phone costs way too much at full retail for me to take the chance.

As other people have mentioned you WILL drop your phone at some point. I have dropped both my phones (1st gen dented 3G scratched back).
you may strike lucky and drop it on a carpet, you might not
can you live with your phone with scratches or dents? I know some people like the idea that their phone looks used. Others think what is the point of a pristine phone under a case which makes it look cr*ppy.
Do you want to sell the phone at the end?
Are there any cases that look as good as the phone itself?
these are questions I asked myself when I dropped my 3G yesterday.
I have now ordered a neo capsule as I think they look 'awesome' (sorry, little joke for people who have seen the review on youtube) plus the 3G doesnt look as good as the 1st gen in my opinion so a case doesnt bother me (especially the neo which looks pretty good from what I can see).

After dropping my black 3G the first time, after I got my phone replaced I decided that I would definitely need a case. If you have butterfingers like me, I would suggest a case. Maybe the Incase Slider or something....

Yes. Cases take away the beauty of the phone, I had an iSkin revo2 on my phone for about a week and had to return it.. I couldn't stand hiding the fact that I waited in line for a white phone and slapping another color case on it, hiding that. I now went back to just using my suede sleeve to put it in when in my pocket, etc to protect it from little scratches and it works 100%, zero scratches here.

I have a leather sleeve and had just answered a text when I dropped the phone. The sleeve was great at protecting the phone when it wasnt being used but you have to take it out at some point.
Normally with my phones I liked them to look a little bit scratched and used (not sure of the psychology of that......) but with my iphone it just somehow bugs me. I'd rather it was in a case (now, I really dont understand the psychology of THAT perhaps its cos I think the case I have ordered looks pretty good........)

I never had a problem on my old iPhone and have been using my white 16GB naked as well. But the other day I found a quarter inch scratch on the glass.
Doesn't really bother me as it's more of a pain to try to take the phone out of my pocket with any type of protector on it.
Oh well it's like a new car, once you get the first scratch...whatever...as long as it works.

As said before, its all a matter of your personality, if you have something and you just wanna enjoy it, as long as it works your ok
But other people like to know its in pristine condition, there will always be people fighting both corners.

I want to go naked with my 3G so bad, but before the 3G and the Curve, I had a Blackberry Pearl.
I dropped it on the sidewalk and the chrome part got scratched so bad you would have thought I let my Golden Retriever use it as a chew toy for a few minutes.
That is why I use a sleeve style case made by Speck.
But man, I HATE how the phone feels and love the feel of it naked.

Since most cases don't cover the screen, do you think if you had a case on, the screen wouldn't have shattered?
In general I think a case would reduce the chances of the screen shattering. Almost all cases stick up a little on the sides around the screen, which means if the phone falls face down then those edges will take the brunt of the impact, not the screen itself. If it falls side-down or back-down, again the case will take the brunt of the impact and reduce the shock that's transferred to the screen. If the phone falls face down and hits a protruding object straight on the screen - well then, unless your case has a flap in front and it's closed, you're probably screwed. Don't drop it that way.
