Does BootCamp support digital audio?

A coworker thinking of switching to the Mac asked if Windows on the Mac supported digital surround sound output for gaming (e.g. optical out to a DD 5.1 processor or speaker system). I have no idea; I just use analog stereo.

Does anyone use digital audio out from their Mac in BootCamp?
