There's absolutely no need to set a home page in Safari! Just leave a tab as your "home page" and when you leave safari close other tabs and leave it on your first original one. Then when you start up safari again it loads that page 🙂
It's good because then sometimes it's already loaded when you open safari up 🙂 saves time.

That's cool.
But there's really no reason to set a homepage on the iPhone. You can just tap the button of your favorite page first. But, if you really want a homepage, you can take the 'Safari' App out of the dock area and put in it's place your choice for your homepage. In the example below, I pulled Safari out and put MacRumors in:

Sure, there's "no reason", but it's the fact that most phones do have it and the iPhone lacks it.
The OP's question did not ask how to get around the lack of a home page.
I'm not saying the iPhone sucks and the Dare is better, at all.
Hell, the only reason I OWN a Dare is because I couldn't get an iPhone.
