Actually any headset with in-line mic that has a connector that looks like this one's:

I just added a link to a video in my original post.

So technically any microphone that would have a "Pink" connector to your sound card on the computer would work?

wow this is really cool! what format are the recorded notes in? i know for the nano it goes into lossless. does the touch convert the files to lossless or leave them into whatever format the app recorded them in?

also off topic question: but what was the song you recorded? it sounds good :p

No. Look at the difference between these two:

http://img.tomshardware.com/us/2007/07/19/how_good_is_apples_wired_iphone_headset/iphone_sized_plug_and_larger_plug.jpg

The one on left will work, the other one will not (as a microphone, headphones will still work of course). The one on the left is the type of jack that usually leads to a headset or headphones with in-line microphone.

The one on the right can lead either to a regular microphone (such as the one with the 'pink' connection) or regular headphone/speakers (usually the 'green' connection). However- as far as I know the 2G Touch will not support audio input from this type of jack.

Headsets only- must have four contacts on a single 3.5mm jack (like the one on the left).

So theoretically you could record lectures; ect. with this app, given the right microphone? Pretty cool.

Definitely possibile! You may need to get a really sensitive mic, and of course it would have to be the headset type (four-contact jack, this (http://www.amazon.com/Apple-iPhone-Stereo-Converter-microphone/dp/B00120U4XU/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&s=apparel&qid=1222022576&sr=8-9) is similar to what I use).

Obviously there would need to be low background noise, and it wouldn't hurt to sit up front, but theoretically it could work very well.

You'd think so, but it has been quite a while and nobody has heard anything from Skype, specifically. There is only one VoIP app on the app store right now, so I guess it really hasn't caught on yet. I bet anything that there will be a VoIP program for the Touch, but whether it will be Skype is up for debate-

On the one hand, larger companies tend to tread lightly and slowly- which could explain its absence from the App Store.

On the other hand, it has been so long that even Spore has an app for the iPhone/iPod Touch, and we know those guys are slooooow.

You'll just have to wait and see- contact the guys who have the only VoIP app on the store (TruPhone) and ask for iPod Touch support if you want, it never hurts to ask (see this thread (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=567217))!

I second the questions on what format these are saved in and how easy it is to take them off the ipod and edit them.

I am a music director and have been looking for a way to record rehearsals onto my ipod touch and then share them with the ensemble... if there were a decent microphone this could be really beneficial for those in my position and any student wanting to record a class.

It is saved as an AIFF file, and once you are done recording, three options pop up: save, email, email and save, and cancel. So it gives you the option to email it right away, but you can still do it later. I don't think a microphone like the one you would need it out (read what I said earlier about the jack) for the Touch.

About my case- it is for the 1g touch, but it fits ok. I don't think anyone carries it any more, I couldn't find it online, and there is no print (brand name or otherwise) on the case. Odd, I know.

Sorry for the double-post, but I needed to bump it so that Tuck would know I found the case:

Enjoy!

P.S.- This is basically the same case, but for the 2G (it's on Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Incipio-Technologies-dermaSHOT-touch-White/dp/B001FB6S1I/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1222133365&sr=8-2) as well):

Skype IS available on the iPod Touch by using the Fring app. Skype is just one of the many possibilities and it s possible to voice and text message using your existing Skype account. Check it out!

the sony headset looks really cool.. where did u get it?

AKmike
Oct 6, 2008, 11:46 AM
I don't think that sony mic will work but I could be wrong. If you look at the previous page of this thread check out the contacts in the pic someone posted. The contacts on your mic are where the stereo headphone output is, and the mic input is the next band up. There is a splitter that splits the headphone and mic input but I don't know if it moves that contact or not. It wouldn't be hard to cut and rewire a headphone cable with a mic on it. than you could set it up to take any standard mic like the one you have. This is something I want to do as well so I hope you get it working.
