So, has anybody ever heard of him before?
He's the lead singer of System Of a Down, released his solo album last October and is a freaken musical genius if I do say so myself.
What are your thoughts and comments about his album "Elect The Dead"? Better or worse than System (if you want to compare the two).
I, personally love his work. I'm lucky enough to run his Official Message Board so I get passes and such to his shows. Him and his band members (The F.C.C/Flying C*nts of Chaos), are great guys. Really go well together like good musicians should.
I can't really come to terms to compare him to System Of A Down, but there is a trace as such of System in there.
Post your thoughts and comments!

Love the album... Has some really good and catchy tunes........... Don't care for him as a person thou. Every interview I have seen him in, ala he was with system at the time and I haven't seen him solo, he has been a prick. Like his music, don't like him.

How come you don't like him? That's a shame

Did you miss the part about him being a prick in interviews and such?

My bad.
Solo, he's a different person.
System, he's a prick. I still personally find the interviews funny though.

i found his solo work to be lackluster at best. all of it blended into the same sound with no diversity in vocals or music imo. bored me when it wasn't just painful to hear.
overall i liked a good deal of his stuff with system of a down, but by himself it seems to just be a bit of one sound.

Can't stand him, to be honest. It's mainly his voice - It's obnoxious and just not good in any way. I don't really have a problem with sporadic music, necessarily, but his music just does something that rubs me the wrong way.

He's one of those singers that people don't like because he's a good singer, but because he has a fairly unique voice. (i.e, Ozzy Osbourne, Axl Rose, Billy Corgan, etc.) I like most of his stuff with System, but his solo stuff isn't my favorite. Really, it doesn't sound much different from SOAD at all, and I was expecting something different.

I must admit I haven't heard the whole album but what I've hear its the same as System. So ya I agree, it didn't make me want to hear any more. Usually in these cases, the sum of the parts is greater...when individual members go solo they have an inflated sense of what they can accomplish & it rarely delivers as there's less creative resource to pull from. I think Serj went solo because Derik started to take over on the last album...the reviews I hear had a less than enthused Serj on stage for that last tour. I like Serj's voice, its def unique but I haven't hear anything close to "genius" from him.
No offence but might be a tad overstated by the OP (ie superfan).

Superfan? Probably, but I like to think of it as my opinion. Being a fan is a form of opinion, right.
Also, I believe you mean "Daron", not "Derik".
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=365iDnbxl-g - Yeah he does seem like an arrogant prick. Not

A friend of mine gifted me "Empty Walls," and that one is pretty good, but I don't have anything else from him. Have a suggestion on what song I could go with next?

Favorite song on the album. Great song IMHO.....
I picked up the scars on broadway album. I really don't like it. There are maybe two songs that I enjoy and the others are blah.
So far I like Serj as a solo.. not to bad, but not great either.

I must admit, Scars is very generic. Lyrical content/or meaning is empty on that album.

Yes-superfan, its your opinion though sure. I see it as biased which is my opinion based on what you wrote and the fact you run his official message board. Not a bad thing, just not the most subjective opinion thats all.
ps yah I meant Daron, realized that type-o after I posted it.

Elect the dead is a pretty decent album, but it's hard not to compare it to SOAD as his voice is so distinctive.

his voice is distinctive, but the labratto (sp?) he uses and keys he sings in draw from his armenian roots. armenian church music is structured around many of those same elements but in a more flowing, melodic manner.
check out this site, and preview song 2 - Two Armenian Chants For Nativity - and see if you can draw the parallels as well.

love the album, he has such a unique voice. I'll keep buying his albums if he releases any more but i'm still hoping System Of a Down will get back together.
I haven't listen to the album released by the other band members though.

solo effort was decent but was a bit too mainstream/alternative
s.o.a.d. is better imo

System Of A Down is a great rock band, but his solo album falls short in my eyes. His prior solo project Seart, on the otherhand, is fantastic!

zomfg i love serj on his own. I though S.O.A.D were legends of their time, but serj really passes on a message on his own, and a powerful one at that. Elect the dead is a great album (very impressed at the drummer) but my favourite songs atm are empty walls, lie lie lie and sky is over.

I've met him a number of times, he was dating an Aussie girl for a while and used to frequent the restaurant I worked in.
Nicest, most unassuming bloke. Never had any issues so we just left him in peace to do his thing and I think he appreciated that.
Not a huge fan of the music, some stuff is good, the other stuff isn't for me.

Saw a bit off him at Leeds Festival, pretty awful at best =/
I like System, but not him, or Scars on Broadway.
