is it possible to unlock iphone 3g, not jailbreak

i havent gotten an iphone yet but planning to get it by the end of the month. i want to unlock it (and terminate contract) so I dont need to pay data plan and have a contract for 2 years. Is it possible to unlock it? can turbosim be used for that? thanks
 
No software unlocking, but users have been successful with hardware unlocking. Some with and some with success. Some have reported instability and some works like new.

I wouldn't chance it though. Even if you unlock and use on AT&T's network, you will be asked to add the data plan as IMEI screens are being done whether it's on your account or not. If you unlock for t-mobile, then you might as well go with the 2g as 3g will be useless.

What's the big deal? Just jailbreak.
