okay, so me and my girlfriend have been together for a long time now, and it's getting close to the time where we take it to the next step (yes, we have talked about it). i'm looking to ask the question sometime in the next few months.
anyways, however i do it, it had better be good, cuz she likes this sort of thing. anyone got any ideas on how i can make this memorable?

I don't know how asking for 69 could be memorable... I guess you could say please.

also, i want to somewhere have this song by George Thorogood called "I'll change my style" (and i know he didn't write it)
lyrics:
I'll change my style
Even change my smile
If the beatin' in my heart
Is too slow for you
Tell me, darlin', tell me, I'll change that too
I'll change my ways
Each night and every day
If there's something bout my lovin'
That don't please you
Tell me, darlin', tell me I'll change that too
I'll change my walk
Even change my talk
If there's something bout my kisses
That don't please you
Tell me, baby, tell me
I'll change that too
I'll change my style
Oh baby after while
If the beatin' in my heart is too slow for you
Tell me, honey, tell me
I'll change that too
I'll change my way
Every night and every day
If there's something bout my lovin' that don't please you
Just tell me, oh tell me, I'll change that too

The movies seem to all agree on the standard routine.
Must works, otherwise they wouldn't keep reusing the same restaurant scene.

Reasonably but not stupidly expensive restaurant.
Bended knee, that sort of thing.

I know you are a XC runner so I am going to assume your girlfriend is too. I'd go about it in a real clever way because I like being clever. Do something like hey let me make you a running mix, and just have a few songs on it, the first or maybe like third or so, being you explain you like her blah blah, with that song you want in the background then bam! Smack her in the face with the question (not to be taken literally). While you are around the area with flowers or other sentimental stuff. Shouldn't be hard if you know her pace/have the timing down on the songs.
That's me though I like being sneakily clever. :p

I was at the beach once and this guy hired a plane towing a banner that said "WILL YOU MARRY ME SANDRA?"
Assuming you don't want to spend that much money on your proposal, I would find some beautiful place to go to. I know someone that took his GF to the top of a historic tower on top of a mountain near by and proposed to her there.
I would do something memorable.

My proposal actually involved Apple. I used iPhoto to make a storybook titled The Story of Us which featured photographs from my collection accompanied by a story which was loosely based on reality. She said yes. Had I used a Microsoft program to create the storybook, I'd still be single.

No, I made an entire story, Once upon a time style. I started by selecting photos from my library from different trips and events over the years. I then crafted an extremely bizarre story that probably had her thinking, "do I really want to marry this guy?"

I just want to be clear.

Men are romantic, women are pragmatic, although they do love attention.
Don't over-think this.
In the afterglow some evening, just pop the question.
One of the twins, Ann Landers or Dear Yappie, once said that "Men give love to get sex. Women give sex to get love."
I have not seen any reason to doubt that.

^^ No, that's a really bad play on words.
I think the restaurant thing is sweet, but rather bland simply due to typicality. You obviously know her pretty good (obv), so think of something she's interested in. In a similar thread a while back, it was suggested that if she likes those GPS hunting games, bury the ring and a note or whatever and have her find it and then pop the question. That type of thing: Make it personal; it'll show you put some thought into it. If it doesn't come off so smooth, it won't matter because she'll know you put time into into making it special and memorable.
Whatever you do, don't do it at a ball game (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Esr_okP5Qmo)!!

Highlight my post ;) and yeah I'd agree with Melrose, I personally like my running idea, but expand on it to make it more personal of course! Maybe go to a nice park, or some other scenery that is amazing looking.

I believe too that it should be a little bit more personal.
Something new, to surprise her but not in front of people. That night,i believe, should be devoted totally to you and your woman! A nice park should be fine or a remote place with no lights, no nothing but the moon, the stars an you should amaze her. Even if you say to her "marry me or your going down b!@#*" ! :D;)

Yup!! For me (and for my age) this is the ideal. Of course i'm still very young for such things but i think she'll remember that day for a very long time!;)
