The One App You wish Mac had

With Me its MS Access, the ONLY reason I have to use Windows at this point is because I can't update Access databases . It's a bummer.

I know there are alternatives to Access but since Access comes with the Windows Office suite and everybody knows how to use it, it's hard to convince my company otherwise.

I now have to use Virtual PC with Access installed to update the database or just use a PC.

I wish the MacBU would include Access with Mac Office, then I might actually "buy" it.

I know that there are alternatives, and I in no way think Access is great. I just wish there was a way on Mac to edit/open/use Access databases even if it was a plugin to another software package.

I'd love to see that, but I wouldn't be able to afford it. There are also a ton of plugins for Lightwave that I'd really like to have, but they're all PC, its quite painful seeing some of the stuff created using them knowing that I'd have to get a PC to do the same.....

I share your pain..... I tried a Flame kit once, and it was the most amazing and intuitive post package I have ever used.... it's jaw dropping in it's power and abilities....... also if you're a Flame artist the money is just incredible..... and the diversity of projects....... I'd love to do that kind of work fulltime.....

I didn't realise that Lightwave had PC only stuff...... that sucks...... would it really be that much more hassle for them to make Mac versions of the stuff that is currently exclusively PC????

Yes it does suck. The problem with most of the plugins is that they are 3rd Party, so its not really upto NewTek to get them mac ready. I imagine that most of the big ones will eventually get ported, NewTek buys up or packages the better ones occassionally.

But I have more than enough to do, so I complain, but I really should just be doing....

Presently the cheapest solution burning more than 90 minutes of video on a single 4.7 GB DVD and be able to playback that DVD in a regular DVD player costs $550, and requires you purchase additional hardware (the Divideon by Formac) to your built-in Superdrive in that $550 price tag. If you want to use your built-in Superdrive you have to spend it appears $1000 for DVD Studio Pro. So much for built-in being easier. Media still costs a fair amount of money compared to CD-R. Oh sure I could make a VCD, but then a standard DVD player won't be able to play it back. There are encode only solutions that cost as little as $300, but require DVD Studio Pro in anycase, namely Bitvice, and then there is Mediacleaner for $550. I'd love to be able to convert my VHS to DVD, but it is looking more and more like I might have to get either the Divideon or DVD Studio Pro. Not quite the amount of money I'd really like to spend to be able to burn as much video to DVD as I have on my VHS.

I thought maybe I could take an exisiting DVD as a template and use Bitvice to encode my video and replace the VLC file and burn that with Toast. Has anyone tried that yet? Are there any other less expensive solutions than the Divideon?

Microsoft Publisher- a great Windows app- for business users, but it's quite of use to hpome users.
Picture It!- Better than iPhoto- allows uou to piyt ohotos uinto fun projects. And Apple hads lied- this is the one to use. Z"For pc users ther's nothing- like it at any price"-WRING- there's lots of imagve editors"
Microsoft Works
Encarta Refernce library- Like World book but is intergrated. It was acvaiable in a MAC version , years ago.
Stardock Software- great customization apps- I don't think kadlidalscope is on OSX- THESE APPS CABN M,AKE YOUR MAC LOOK LIKEV SOMETHING DIFFERENT, make swets of icons.

The most up to date version is 8.5 (available on both). However, it only runs in classic - no native OSX version.

I wish there was an app that would allow me to generate feedback on the stereo's inside the 'cars' on the road that have the 100+ watt systems in them and crank the base so high that you can feel/hear it from over 50' (more like 1/4 mile in some cases). Enough of a feedback that would blow out all the speakers inside that vehicle and, I would hope, the same dumb *******'s ears drums. Those are the same stupid ****** that put the items on their tailpipes to make them louder. In the end, it makes them sound like they have chainsaw motors under the hood. Maybe you can tell how I feel about that crap... If it was legal to, I would hunt them all down and end my suffering!!! The sound of a V8 engine is one thing. Those sound systems in cars and muffler mods are just signs of protruding brows.

I think it would be real swell if Bently brought back their Macintosh version of MicroStation. It's all we use at our firm for CADD work. Well, some of our arcitechs use AutoCAD. I guess that would be nice too.

Have you tried Suitcase??? sure it's not ATM but is the best thing going in OSX at the moment!! :)

As for director..... Macromedia is really dragging it's feet with this one........ :rolleyes:

Yup. We'd still be on Macs at work if Bentley hadn't pulled the plug on MicroStation Mac.:(

Seems stupid for them not to keep at least the Unix version going... by now Bentley would have cornered the market for Mac-based architects (and there USED to be a lot in London!) since it's the only thing that can deal with .dgn and .dwg files natively...

yes....I've used it in the past...

and I hate to sound like a snob...but I'd rather not have anything than use Suitcase...

actually, font reserve works fairly well on os x. i like it much better than suitcase. maybe try that one out. i think you can get a free demo from their website.

Absolutly.

The best I have come accross is Symantic's WinFaxPro. Still is a little complicated. Also the older versions of FaxSTF for OS 7,8,and 9 weren't bad, they were easy to use, but lacked the control over details that WinFaxPro has.

When it comes to quick and dirty publications, Publisher is hard to beat. It would also be nice as it is the one app I have on my PC at work that I don't have at home...

Oh wait. I do have Publisher 2.0 on my 486sx-25! I wonder if it would be compatable with Office XP? :rolleyes:
