View Full Version : What are they gonna call the 3rd Gen iPhone?

TheSpaz

So now we have 2 iPhones:

1: The 1st Gen iPhone (also known as: Original iPhone, iPhone 2G and iPhone 2.5G)
2: iPhone 3G

I know that in the past, Apple has been pushing out new iPods every year or so and each year, the newest model is known as iPod 2G, 3G, 4G, 5G... the reason we label them as such is because the iPod name stays the same each year so we have to have something to be able to identify which model it is.

Now with the 2 iPhones, how are we supposed to start identifying them?

Just plain "iPhone" works for the original iPhone
iPhone 3G works for the 3G iPhone (2nd Gen)
What's next? iPhone 3rd Gen, not to be confused with 3G? iPhone 3G 3G? iPhone "new-function-here"? It's already confusing enough that people call the original iPhone "iPhone 2G" and "2.5G" I understand that they're talking about the data network generation, but what the heck are we going to call the 3rd Generation iPhone if 3G is already taken by the 2nd Gen (not to be confused with 2G).

This is very confusing.

What are your suggestions for how to name the iPhones? I think Apple should come out with cool codenames for the iPhones like they did with Mac OS X! That could be wicked cool! Of course these code names would not be ON the iPhone itself, it will still be just iPhone but, we could identify them easier.

The 3G iPhone won't yet have 4G networking. The 3G will have 3G. The 4G will have 4G. It will even out in two years; buck up until then.

iPhone "new-function-here"?

This is exactly what it will be. That's what the new one is, isn't it? iPhone (New Function), in other words, iPhone 3G.

What the feature is, who knows. But whatever is the most imporant, that will be the name.

The iPhone 32 GB?

The iPhone Video Chat?

My guess: iPhone Pro. It will be a new model to go with the one we have now, with a bigger screen, faster processor, etc.

Not sure how they can improve on the current 3G next year, other than perhaps a longer lasting battery. I think a new product category is more likely.

They called the second iPhone the iPhone 3G, just to be very clear on the fact that it does in fact have 3G, since this was a major flaw to many on the previous iPhone.

The next phone will revert back to just the iPhone, since it is now apparent to consumers that the phone does have 3G.

What did they call the new iPod? iPod.
What did they call the new iPod with video? iPod.
What did they call the 2nd gen iPod Nano? iPod Nano.
What did they call the 3rd gen wide iPod Nano with video? iPod Nano.

etc, etc.

So no, I don't think they will tinker with the name. They may even drop the 3G attribute and just call it iPhone again. IMO they should have done that right away. In many countries, 3G has been around since 2003 and 3G support is taken for granted. To launch a 3G phone in 2008 and put 3G in the name is a bit dorky, it's like calling the MacBook "MacBook DVD" because it has this "revolutionary" new thing called a "DVD drive" that lets you play movies.

I seem to remember an apple developer mentioning somewhere the that technically the Iphone 3G is also the 3G Iphone.

G3 Iphone 3G

How this makes sense, IDK, but I trust that developer had plenty of insight into the Iphone.

The same as the iPods.

They didn't change the name of the iPods everytime they released them. There was iPod, iPod mini, iPod Shuffle, and iPod Photo, then Nano, Classic and Touch.

When having colour screen become standard, they morphed iPod and iPod Photo into one - becoming the New iPod.

My bet is this will simply be the iPhone, or new iPhone, like it should have been with the 3G. They can't rename the product with every bit of hardware change. (well they can, its just stupid, IMO)

The next phone will revert back to just the iPhone, since it is now apparent to consumers that the phone does have 3G.

When you say, "to be very clear on the fact that it does in fact have 3G," what you mean is, took "3G" and associated with something good "iPhone" and made the same product not only sound better, but turned 3G itself into a marketable item.

Regardless of how many phones there were on 3G last year and even the year before, the iPhone 3G is what made "3G" itself popular with the general mobile phone consumer base. Before that, data, especially fast data, was not nearly as important to a lot of people.

These have had different generations but, the name says the same. The only way you can tell which generation it is, is by the year it was made or if you remember which generation it is.

Example. I used to own a (Summer 2000) iMac. It was just called iMac, but if I needed to get service done to it... I had to tell them it was a "Summer 2000" model.

iPhone VC: for iPhone Video Chat.

The next revision will have substantially the same features with the addition of a front facing camera and full ichat support (Video Chat). Naming conventions like this can get confusing when, like Sony, you sell tons of different models at the same time, but since they sell just one at a time, naming it after the new hardware feature makes sense.

The one after (June 2010) will obviously be iPhone QC (Quad Core).

I think it'll be some kind of visual related codeword to emphasise the better camera/video. After all, the iPod Touch is named after the touch screen, the most visually arresting obvious thing different when you see someone using it.

So I think it'll be the "iPhone View", or "iPhone See" (nice pun on it being revision 3, or "C" too…) or somesuch.

I'm thinking iphone video, or iPhone HD if they pull off 720p recording.

Other possibility is splitting it to iPhone nano and iPhone pro if they come out with 2.

Goes along with what they did with the iPod-iPod photo and video, I can't think of any other awesomeness they might pack into the new hardware to justify including it in the name. They kindof hosed themselves with calling the 2nd generation 3g if there is no drastic hardware changes.

Would it be legal to set up a betting pool for this? I want to win some money with iPhone video or iPhone HD

I think we're overthinking this. Apple is simple so I think they'll just get rid of the 3G label and called it simply "iPhone." It'll be referred to as iPhone (3rd generation) on Apple support pages, etc. (exactly like the iPods).

3.0 (or any variations thereof) is too easily confused with 3G.

Bingo. I was about to make post saying it will either be iPhone Video or iPhone HD and then I read yours. Mark my words, it is going to be one of those two names. Each release Apple does adds a descriptive element to the title to boast its most prominent new feature, like how the iPod went iPod Photo, then iPod Video, and the iPod Shuffle, and iPhone 3G. Since the new iPhone will most likely boast video chat and/or a better camera, it's gonna be something that describes that feature.

The only problem with iPhone Video is that it sounds a little stale since there was already an iPod Video. So I'm gonna go with iPhone HD.

They don't need to call it anything. A product can be new without its name changing. Had the presence of 3G not been necessary for the major iPhone 3G marketing push Apple has accomplished in the last year, I would even go as far to say that they should've just called the iPhone 3G "iPhone" as well.

They can market new features without a confusing new name. There's no reason for unnecessary differentiation between current and previous products based on name unless the product line contains multiple devices -- the iPhone product line currently does not.

The problem is, with the iPod it was really easy for us to describe each new model as iPod 2G, 3G, 4G, etc. But "iPhone 3G" has totally confused that and Apple knows that. I think they sacrificed their opportunity to call future models simply "iPhone", they need to give their buyers a way to describe the new model since they screwed up the naming already.

Roessnakhan
Mar 22, 2009, 03:21 PM
Most people don't refer to the iPods like we do though. Its most likely just the "new" or "old" iPod version to them, they don't think in generations. So I don't think Apple thinks they messed up by calling the newest iPhone the iPhone 3G.

It's funny that the 1st generation iPhone will not be getting ALL of the updates that the 2nd generation iPhone will be getting. Take note that this is how a lot of companies make their money. This is clear foreshadowing that Apple is limiting a lot of things to get consumers to upgrade hardware every year.

At least that's what i see in my eyes

I have nothing against Apple, nor am I an Apple fan. The only product I've owned from them ever is a 1st generation Nano and an iPhone 3G.

They'll probably just call it iPhone 3rd generation.

Apple's big announcement this summer! They're going to let people jailbreak and they won't even care. In fact, they're gonna let all the popular jailbroken apps onto the App store. The new iPhone will be called.

iPhone Video.

The name will have to include something that is only featured on that iPhone.

This is exactly what it will be. That's what the new one is, isn't it? iPhone (New Function), in other words, iPhone 3G.

What the feature is, who knows. But whatever is the most imporant, that will be the name.

The iPhone 32 GB?
The iPhone Longer Battery?
The iPhone Video Recorder?
The iPhone Video Chat?
The iPhone Cut-N-Paste (Since this apparently will require new hardware)

Wait is Cut-N-Paste not coming to the iPhone 3G (2nd generation)?

It is.

And the iDiddy. Btw, it's not gonna be iPhone HD, I mean, there's a Zune HD now.

I think people will unofficially dub it as "iPhone Video" while Apple will brand it as either "New iPhone 3g" or simply "iPhone"

Instead of making up our own "names" why don't we just wait and see what Apple calls it?
