Didn't we used to have Design challenges on the forum? Or am I thinking of another forum? Either way, it'd be cool to have official challenges like this ever so often :)

I've wondered this quite a bit myself... I didn't get in on the first two or three, and then I forgot for a while, and now I can't find them anymore. I'd totally like to have little assignments... to me, that was the best part of taking classes, the things you could learn from others and inspiration within a fixed limit... it sort of gave you a reason to learn and try new things.

I'm liking that, sir, particularly with the revisions.

This was clearly not a commercial job, so don't be a plonker.

Very nice... I find desktop photos to be distracting, but as a poster, this is very nice.

Thank you! Glad you like it.

Well, I wasn't a part of this brigade, but I do support the movement of NoSpec, because spec work is a damaging concept and even I myself have been caught in that trap of non-initiated outsiders asking for more and more without commitment. Anyway, this isn't a bid, there is no payment involved, and it's not even marketable... plus this is my free time and I offered to make it. I didn't even feel comfortable marking my name on it because I didn't make the historic illustrations or take the original photograph (significantly modified or not)... because I don't really care even about credit. I'd give the PSD to anyone who wanted it. Plus, it was fun, meaningful, and something I could use... and to a person who was nice and asked nicely for a personal present for family. Come on. He wasn't asking for a free logo and website template for his business or anything.

I'm sort of pleasantly surprised, myself. I found the first one's colors too busy so I am glad there is the b&w nature of my revised one, and I'm using it right now! I actually haven't made many desktops for myself that I've ever liked myself! Or used! So that's a cool milestone for myself, making something even I like.
thanks! the one she is using!

Yay! Hopefully she likes it. She must be a cool person to appreciate a quote like that, and to have a nice brother like you. Thanks for the inspiration, kids. :)

Seriously, if you can't see the difference between someone saying "I need a new desktop for my sister" and "I'm in the middle of a paying job and I need someone to make my typography decisions for me" then the problem is in your head and not in our attitude.

I would point out (again) that I have frequently offered professional grade advice and, for example, recently took the time to specifically draw guides for a DVD insert when the original poster seemed to be struggling to grasp the replies that were being offered.

It's unfair of you to characterize us in the way that you have done here.

Cheers

Jim

I'm one of those who wouldn't do work for free but to be honest what exactly could we charge for a desktop background (ignoring corp/pomotional type ones) , they're all over the internet so its not like they're hard to get hold of

And as said, this isn't exactly a business type request and I don't think the op would mind a 'lesser' quality of work so to speak.

I might knock up something simple later if I'm bored :)

We had those little "assignments" a year or so ago. It never made it past assignment 2 I don't think. We should get that started back up again.

Does anyone know who the quote is by?...very introspective.

I love the redesign...
fantastic work. :D

If you haven't...I would consider putting it in the October desktops thread.
