I've never used Time Machine but I do know that a PC won't recognize a Mac formatted drive. When I replaced the HD in my MacBook I used the old HD as an external and it had to be reformatted to be used with a PC. My Mac will still recognize it so I just left it formatted that way so it could be used with a PC as well. Although I'm not sure if that will work with Time Machine.

pc = Fat32 or NTFS formats

Mac = Fat32 or Mac formats

Time Machine = Mac format

Notice that a Mac or pc can use Fat32 but you can't use it for Time Machine.

Suggestion: make 2 partitions on the HD - one for Mac and the other Fat 32 and use the Mac partition for Time Machine. Use the Fat32 for everything else for your Mac and pc.

Make sense? -GDF
