1st gen iphone suddenly not showing up in itunes, can't sync

Okay, so I am technologically challenged and have no idea what happened. I have tried advice I read on here about shutting it down, then holding the button and plugging into Usb simultaneously until a screen came up about restoring and it didn't work.
I am assuming I have to restore it, but if It isn't showing up in the itunes, how can I do this?

oh ps,I am using an imac but had been using a sony vaio...

and have transferred my music from that computer.
 
I had this happen the other day, and I just disconnected the phone and closed itunes three or four times. Finally it started to synch. I never understood why and it hasn't happened since.😕😕😕
 
try a restore on DFU mode, search it up in google, itunes will detect it and then you can restore
