I often produce current events/news/informational videos, whether it be for school or merely something to do and post on YouTube, and I'm in need of background music for these productions. I'm looking for something that's 'smart' sounding-- something pleasant, contemporary, ambient, but interesting. What I have in mind is something similar to the music on CNN International (examples here (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=dCL_kPw4pbc&feature=related) and here (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=oSYS1_9CoSI&feature=related).)
Does anybody know if I can find what I'm looking for on iTunes?
Thanks.

I've often thought about how I could use certain music I like for various video projects, but I'm not sure what the copyright ramifications are, without getting permission first... I'm sure you could get away with just taking any song you bought/borrowed in a minor YouTube vid, but then again you never know what the powers that be might think if it got some internet traction...
A suggestion: why don't you check out iCompositions.com, browse a lot of the ambient or electronica genre's, and if you find anything you like, just ask the original artist if you can use it. In most cases you'll probably find them thrilled to get their music out there on some video/film production, with appropriate credits, of course.

Ya don't use anything of iTunes w/o permission from the publisher, not legal.

So then where can I find music I can legally use that isn't inferior (I don't like the GarageBand jingles)?

have you tried the Jam Packs ?

You mean making my own music? I have attempted that, but even with the free jam packs I got from the old mac.com, they all came out like junk.
When I was referring to GarageBand before, I was referring to the prepackaged royalty-free podcast jingles. I've used those before, but none of them are quite what I'm looking for, and I hear those jingles everywhere now, from amateur YT videos to regional car commercials.

i have used some loops from the Symphony Orchestra packs and was happy with the results - you could do what i did - download the demo stuff from Mobile Me members area - then buy the packs - use em then ebay em once project is done.

I'm never really satisfied with Garageband. Even using those Remix kits, they don't sound very genuine. Is there another option?

Have you done a google search? I know I've seen a site that had copyright free music that was either free or you could purchase at a reasonable price & then use it for whatever you want. It was like an iTunes for background or movie music etc.
