"If they can provide scientific data that can prepare us for events in the future, then that's extremely important," said Tom Jordan of the Southern California Earthquake Center at the University of Southern California.

So I am to leave my Mac Laptop (a relatively new one, going on the fact that it needs to be equipped with the SMS) in a basement and just let it sit there until an earthquake occurs?

Most earthquake prone areas don't have basements...

Maybe our iPhones should all be tied into a network. If a large number of accelerometers in the same area report the same movement, it's an earthquake!
