Well, I was idley dreaming this morning with my calulator and a figure I've seen in which a G5 processor can fold a single percentage of a protein in about 5 minutes. Check these figures out.

Virginia Tech:
1100 Dual G5's

Single G5 Stats
~2.8 WUs/day
~19.6 WUs/week

2.8 WUs x 2200 processors = 6,160 WUs/day
19.6 WUs x 2200 processors = 43,120 WUs/week

Figuring on an average of 30 points per WU, that works out to 1,293,600 points PER WEEK!

If only it were so... :D

-Joel

[EDIT: Fixed erronious calculation. I used the #'s for what a dual G5 would be outputting overall per day/week and then used it as if it were a single G5. Still impressive though.]

Good work lucid. That is really amazing.

Imagine what the new farm of Xserves with 970fx's will do to those figures.

Damn, if only we could have them fold for us one day a month, it would make a huge difference :D

That's just nuts!

That would be great, but unfortunately I don't think they're going to let us use them.

BTW, I just started folding today - on an iMac 800 and a 1Ghz PIII. They may not be the fastest, but I'm glad to be a part of the team. :)

Welcome to the team MacFan! Any contribution is welcome to both our team and folding in general!
