Queen to give knighthood to Bill Gates - but you can blame it on Gordon Brown
By Robert Peston, City Editor
(Filed: 25/01/2004)
Bill Gates, the Microsoft founder and the world's wealthiest man, is to receive an honorary knighthood for "services to global enterprise".
The recommendation that he receive the honour was made by the Chancellor, Gordon Brown. Buckingham Palace is expected to announce it tomorrow, when Mr Gates will speak at a conference on "Advancing Enterprise" organised by Mr Brown._
The controversial software company creator - whose commercial success has led to hatred of him among his competitors - is worth an estimated $40 billion (£22 billion). Microsoft is described as the "Evil Empire" by those who resent its grip on the computer industry.

At least he's not getting knighted for innovating in the computer industry...

I don't get having a 'queen' anymore, no power, nothing matters.
'Knight' was once a respectable title, now given out like candy.

the queen isnt immune if she commits crimes. but the thing is, the state acts on the behalf of the queen, so it would be kinda weird seing a case Queen v Queen, because the state would be in essence prosecuting itself (or the source from which its power is derived).

The Queen does have legal immunity and is not subject to criminal law. The Sovereign has immunity from prosecution and cannot be required to give evidence in court, however this is only for the Sovereign and not the rest of the Royals.

Am I right in thinking that only British citizens can use the title "Sir"? I seem to remember something like that when Bob Geldof was knighted. So it might not be "Sir" Bill after all.
And as to the Queen and the other Royals..........

seems in the old days real Hero's where made knights, today rock stars, movie stars, singers,CEO's, etc.... in other words if your famous and have a lot of money we will make you a knight. Real hero's such as Dr's, scientist, explorers, and those in the military the Queen could give a hoot about you. reminds me of George and his wallstreet buddies all patting each other on the back while the common man is shafted a little more.. What about the real Hero's? Does England really need to keep paying for a Queen? give her and the so called royal family the boot. what does it cost to keep the royals? a better idea would be to have her mop a few floors, clean some dishes along with her so called knights including nerdy bill.

It'll be an honorary (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/3428673.stm) one. Actually a virtual knighthood for a computer CEO seems sort of appropriate.

They didn't rig it... it was an accident, the whole conspiracy theory was created by that muppet Mohammed Al-fayed, and the numerous 'facts' he's supposed to have known, are for all purposes fabricated.
The Secret Service are not above or beyond the Law and are subject to Criminal Law. The Queen however isn't... it's not my statement, it's the Law.

Yeah. But whats a "GBE"? Guardian? Surely you mean MBE (member - might be wrong though), OBE (umm...pass!) or CBE (citizen of the British emipre).
Oh yeah, for all that are interested, the Metro newspaper said that Bill Gates was "absoulutely delighted" to be receiving a kinghthood...for "outstanding contribution to enterprise" in Britain and for reducing poverty in the developing world and the Commonwealth.
Rumours of Adolf Hitler receiving one for "outstanding contribution to world genetics" remain unfounded.

- Making misery for millions of MS users
- Unreliable software
- Reduced competition
Windows is still not usable after all these years.

Easy tiger. Microsoft is founded on compatibility and setting a standard (albeit, a low one). They made money this way, not by making a quality product. Only in the last coupla years have their products gotten better.
XP is very nice. Ive used it for a year and never had problems.
I used OS9 the other day, and it crashed 4 times w/ restart. I almost pulled my hair out. OSX is great, but both Apple and Microsoft have had lemons in the past.
You cant argue with success. I agree that Apple makes a superior product most of the time, but you cant say that a lot of the successes of the technological world stem somewhere from the successes of Microsoft. There are smart engineers there too.

Bill Gates can never be a 'Sir' in the brittish empire, he is not british for a start, he is 'only' being given an honorary title he IS NOT becoming a knight!
Also knighthoods are to show contribution to the empire (in its modern meaning) and lets be fair he has. Buisness without MS is close to unthinkable and he has done ALOT for charity, although it gauls me to say this, good on him he desevers the regognition for the good he has done.
Dont flame me for this comment, think about it from a non anti-ms point of view..

No, you cannot argue their success, its there to see. However, I firmly believe that if it wasn't micrsooft, then it would be another company, say, IBM, or Digital Research, or maybe even Apple. Computing would be in the same position today, with or without Microsoft - i.e., computesr would be everywhere and they would be cheap.

Exactly... what we need in this country is an excentric multi millionaire that's willing to take on seemingly goofy projects with all that money. Where's the next Howard Huges? I mean, we've got Michael Jackson, but I'm thinking of "exccentric" in a more non-wierdo sort of way.
Gates should buy a large chunk of land and out-Disney Disney World, build the worlds largest derigible, a luxury cruise submarine with lots of windows, etc. SOMETHING.

What infuriated me completely was Paul Mc Cartney given a knighthood when George Harrison was not honored; George did much more than Paul in terms of broadening Britons' minds: and he wrote gorgeous lyrics and beautiful music. Paul was a songwriter. George was an Artist: someone the whole of England should be very proud of. I love Ringo: but he was just a drummer.
Balin64
Jan 27, 2004, 01:46 AM
They could honor John and George with post-humous knighthoods. Has this ever happened? John was much too contriversial at the time of his death to be honored. And I suppose Ringo has to be included at some point: Kinight the Fab Four already! You know, someone should start a thread about this... any Britons on the forum? What do you think? Should your country knight four of your best five-loved countrymen in the world (William Shakespeare) or a monopolistic (albeit philanthropist, yes) geek? Gates has nothing on George or John. Britons: can you petition the queen? I've lived in London, and come to think of it, I never saw placards with suggestions to the queen at Buckingham when she was in town. Is this considered disrespectful? I ramble... Oh yeah, Screw the Pseudo Knight Gates.

We have one his name is Burt Rutan (http://www.airspacemag.com/asm/web/twd/Rutan.html) he's certainly not on the level of Hughes but is certainly eccentric in his level of interest and type of designs of air craft. He's certainly throwing a lot of money into Space Ship One his X-Prize entry.

sir (satan is returning) bill gates... i remember finding the following on the net a while ago and found it entertaining, if not a little scarry:
Warning! Bill Gates may be the next antichrist. The real name of the Bill Gates is William Henry Gates III. Nowadays he is known as Bill Gates (III), where "III" means the order of third (3rd). By converting the letters of his name to the ASCII-values you will get the following:
B I L L G A T E S 3
66 + 73 + 76 + 76 + 71 + 65 + 84 + 69 + 83 + 3 = 666
Is the fourth beast Microsoft corporation which represents the power of money? Revelation 13:16 and 13:18 says:
He causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads," "and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

I hope he continues his humanitarian endeavors.

Exactly whether it be for good reasons or not the money is helping someone. Besides it's not good for people to horde that much money if enough people do it it causes inflation.
According to BBC Breakfast this morning, Gates is to be given the title today. I was gonna start a new thread, but I was good and searched it instead.
Been watching BBC News 24/Breakfast since 5am, looking for signs of fatigue on the presenters. Nothing. Till 6.30am, Dermont and Natasha look like they partied a little too hard last night...
Anyway, someone should send the queen an iPod or something...

So, instead of starting a new thread, you brought a thread that is 13 months old to life again? :p

So, it's official, 'sir' William and 'the lady' Melinda met the Queen earlier today:

And for all those americans who wondered if non brits could receive this order, people like Ronald Reagan, Alan Greenspan and Rudy Giuliani has received their KBW... as a 'foreigner' they're not allowed to use the 'sir' title, though...
Edit: Nice thread-recycling... :D

It's a great honor to be knighted. I think he's knighted more for his humanitarian work than for his software programs. Anyway, kudos on Bill for receiving the honour.

May I apologise for the shame that the royal family bring on on my country. A shame exemplified in the giving of a so called "knighthood" to that di*khead Bill Gates.
Philantrophist my arse! If he wan't ripping people off with his sh*t software there would be more money in peoples pockets anyway to use the way they choose.
Thank God everyone in the developing world is at least using unlicensed copies of his cr*p anyway. F*ck Bill Gates.

He's honored only for his humanitarian work.
...which of course he can afford from establishing a near-monopoly in the OS market and subsequently as many areas of the software market as possible... :(

I agree that he has been a good humanitarian, but he should be... He's been charging enough for Windows and has a pretty good monopoly on the product market for O.S. share right now. There are people that are beginning to see the light, but he's still rolling in the dough. He ought to be giving back to the community that has so kindly given him billions...

That is a nice picture of Bill and Melinda with the Queen. A picture of the actual ceremony would be nice. He is deserving because of his humanitarian work.

I heard on the radio that Sir Bill had some trouble opening the box that his knighthood 'medal' was in when outside with the media. The radio crew this morning were making lots of jokes about how it should have come with a 'Start' button on the front clasp. :)

Any one else think accepting a title granted by a monarchy not in tune with what it means to be American?
Anyway, in case anyone was interested. It is not permitted for a government official (military included) to hold a honorary title from a foreign entity (unless strictly allowed by congress).
I'm not against titles, but they are something that are given to the distinguished and for jobs of prominence, such as PhD’s, and yes even to the President. But anyway, way to take a society founded on principles of equality and spitting on it you monopolistic bastard.
