Here's what I'm looking to do but can't see any obvious way to do it:

Create two versions of all songs in my library (ripped from CDs):

- A lossless version (M4A or AAC) for home use
- An MP3 version for iPod use

I know I can rip to lossless and then convert the file to MP3, so this step isn't a problem (though it would be nice to automate the process). It gets tricky here:

- Have only the lossless version display on my library on my Mac
- Have only the MP3 version transferred to my iPod
- Have changes to song (e.g. rating) made in the lossless file be updated in the MP3 version (and vice versa)

Some of this is possible using playlists, but it is awkward and is not optimal.

Any suggestions? My objective is pretty simple - audiophile-quality sound at home, small file sizes for the iPod, and the clean organization of iTunes.
