Interested in everyone's favorite TV shows that they've ripped so far. Personally, I've decided not to rip anything in the 4:3 format, so no old ones... my favorite shows encoded so far (in this order) are:

Deadwood
Battlestar Galactica
Heroes
Rome

If you haven't seen Deadwood, I STRONLY recommend it! :)

I'm saving the BSG experience for Bluray - hopefully they'll release all 4 seasons and Razor as a Bluray boxset when season 4 is over!

These do change, depending what I'm in the mood for but my present favs are:

The X-Files
Stargate SG-1
Firefly
Battlestar Galactica
Looney Tunes Golden Collections (LOTS o'cartoons, doc!)
Stargate Atlantis

As an aside I did purchase BSG seasons 1 & 2 from the iTunes store and the quality is quite good. The only disappointment is those two seasons aren't in DD 5.1, but it's not that big a deal for me.

Regards,
Michael

I couldn't get my Firefly discs to rip with Handbrake or MTR. You had no problems? Also, how does stargate compare to BSG in your opinion? I've never seen it.

Stargate SG-1
Stargate Atlantis
Farscape
Firefly

Maybe more to come...

I'm not ripping as much as I thought - would rather watch my TV and Movie shows with my home theater, on DVD and preferably, HD DVD/Blu-ray.

If I rip for AppleTV, it's for watching upstairs in the bedroom. I also download a lot of documentaries that are released via iTunes rather than buy a higher priced DVD with 1 TV show on it.

I'm using MTR 3-r14m to rip my DVD and have not had any trouble. If you're still using v2.6.6 you might try upgrading. The process can be a bit tedious but it's worth it, I think. Just be patient and polite.

I think the two shows compare well on a creative level. They both have strong characters and a good creative team behind them. Stargate is not as "gritty" as BSG, but it is intended to be as much of a straight drama as BSG is. The Stargate "universe" is not the dark place the BSG "universe" is.

If you're a fan of BSG you might want to give Stargate Atlantis a shot first; that show has a darker tone than SG-1 much like BSG. You don't have to have watched SG-1 to enjoy it.

Obviously I enjoy all three shows so I might be a bit biased. :-)

Michael

I've got all my DVDs ripped and accessible on :apple:TV. I really like the convenience of having it all in one place, almost literally at the touch of a button. If I want to watch that one specific ep of The X-Files with flukeman it in, I don't have to flip through my DVD sets to find it, just hit the :apple:TV Activity on my Harmony remote, scroll to the ep on the list and hit play.

Of course I don't have a Blu-ray player, and right now my only legitimate source of HD video is the iTunes Store.

Guys

I am a new PC convert to mac, and will post this in the appropriate forum maybe, but wanted to ask it here as you are all talking about this

You talk about things like - "I've got all my DVDs ripped and accessible on TV. I really like the convenience of having it all in one place, almost literally at the touch of a button. If I want to watch that one specific ep of The X-Files with flukeman it in, I don't have to flip through my DVD sets to find it, just hit the TV Activity on my Harmony remote, scroll to the ep on the list and hit play. "

This is 100% what I am wanting to do! How do I do this?

My son loves the wiggles and Madagascar - bit the discs are sooo scratched, if I don't do this now, I will have to buy new ones.
But also, I want the convenience watching them through MacTv would offer

I just bought the iMac 2.8, 24" and also 160gb apple tv - arrives next week - aghhh, sleepless nights!

But - can you tell me, nice and simply, how can I put these DVD movies onto my Mac, and watch them through Mac TV on my plasma?

Sorry it's probably a lame question, and many times over answered, but all the google searching I have done only talks about converting DVD's to Ipod touch etc...

Welcome to the mac world :) Im a recent switcher myself and I have gone through the process of ripping all my dvds to my mac, so I can watch them on my plasma.

I use the free software called handbrake (http://handbrake.fr/)to rip my dvds to the mac using Apple TV settings. This setting will keep your movies high quality. In order to hook your plasma to your iMac you will need to buy an apple mini DVI lead. Depending on your Plasma's connections it will be a mini DVI-Svideo, mini DVI-Scart, or mini DVI-VGA (http://store.apple.com/us/product/M9320G/A). If your plasma has a VGA port id recommed using that. Once you have this connected your Plasma will act as a second monitor to your iMac, so you can then play your movies on it.

You'll also need to use a program called MetaX (google search) to "tag" the ripped movies/tv shows before you add them into iTunes. If you check out this thread (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=384485), you'll see what I mean. Eventually, as you back up your DVDs, you'll notice that your computer doesn't have the space necessary to hold all of the files (ripped movies are around 2GB each). At that point, you'll want to check out this thread (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=502415). Good luck!

Thanks guys!

I bought Apple TV though, so I can stream them across wirelessly.
I can do it this way can't I, instead of with cables and using the plasma as a second monitor?

Also dont I need MacTheRipper?

I'm in the camp that wants all of my DVDs encoded and stored for AppleTV usage, but I'd probably have to say the series that I have taken the most time on would be either The X-Files, or Futurama.

I've re-encoded these series' at least three times apiece already, and am about to do them again ofr a forth time. Those darn Handbrake devs keep adding features that make these mixed-content DVDs look amazing, so I delete and start over. :D

Torchwood. It's a BBC show that's a spin-off of Dr. Who. They just put out season 2 of the show on DVD.

No - Season 4 is currently airing on Monday nights (we're up to Episode 2).

Probably the best TV show there is right now. The writers are so creative - there isn't anything like it right now. Their techniques and styles of telling the story are fantastic. Plus the characters are just legen....wait for it...dary!

So far I've ripped

-The Office (all seasons_
-Looney Tunes Golden Collection Seasons/Volumes (1-5).

The Looney tunes ripped very well. I only turned on Deinterlace to "Slow". Everything came out exactly like the dvd's. 1500 Kbps FTW.

Do The Simpsons early seasons require deinterlace (slow)?

-Looney Tunes Golden Collection Seasons/Volumes (1-5).

I'm just curious: did you rip the cartoons individually or to one file per disc? I ripped them all individually.

Incidentally you shouldn't need to deinterlace the looney tunes cartoons since the original source is film, not video. Just a tip for the future once you get Volume 6. :-)

Michael

I ripped them into one large file because if you skip through it, the next chapter will be a new cartoon. Thanks for the advice on this. I will use it when I get to the next season.

Now with The Simpsons or Family Guy, I would rip by episode. Looney Tunes is a different story because each cartoon is 7 minutes long not 22 mins. Should I go back and do them with deinterlace on and individually?

I might consider doing this because I would like to have the name of each cartoon title.

Is the first season of How I Met your Mother in 4:3 aspect ratio?
Did you get all of these (firefly) from the iTunes store? Those can't all be in HD yet, can they? Or are you ripping Blu-Ray somehow?

I can't see why they'd make the DVD 4:3 though..

I've been working like crazy trying to get all my DVD TV shows ripped (DVDremaster and FairMount) but so far in the last year have done only: (I tend to focus mostly on my movies so TV shows have to wait)
Babylon5 - entire series plus TV movies finished
Crusade finished
Firefly plus Serenity finished
Buffy - seasons 1 & 2
Angel - only season 1
Coupling - season 1-4 finished
Creature Comforts - season 1 & 2
Invader Zim - season 1-3 finished
Robot Chicken - season 1
Stargate Atlantis - season 1-4
Stargate SG-1 - season 1, 7 & 8

I still have to do:
Space Above and Beyond
American Gothic
Scrubs
X-Files
Alien Nation plus TV movies
LEXX
Starship Troopers Roughnecks (cartoon set) plus movies
Star Trek - TOS, TNG, DS9 plus the movies
Roar

I have alot of TV Stuff I still give preference to those type of Non Serialized shows first, things like MASH, Trek, Addams Family etc, shows that you can grab an episode and watch whenever. New Arc Shows like 24, Prison Break i tend to not convert because it forces you to watch the entire season in order.
