no audio on songs purchased from iTunes store?

My iPhone plays tracks that I had uploaded to my computer from CD's just fine, but when I try to play songs purchased through iTunes (and downloaded to my phone from my computer) I get no sound. The album artwork shows up, and the slider indicates that the song is playing, but there is no sound.

Any ideas as to why this is happening? 😕

(I am using a first-gen iphone with 2.1)
