View Full Version : Buy CoD 4 via Aspyr download or Retail? Help!

I never thought I'd ask this but I was wondering what you guys thought of the Aspyr download service for CoD4.
I've loathed Aspyr ever since I got a Mac due to their insane love for DRM (more so then EA even!) and when I read how their digital download restricts you to THREE lifetime installs I was like no way. What happens if you format OS X more then three times? You have to rebuy the game?
That said, I'm tired of waiting for a retail version to come out with no indication its coming out.
Can someone explain to me how the downloaded version is? One thing that would make me consider buying it is if it has no "Insert CD" type DRM lock. I hate putting a CD in to play games so if the physical media version has that then I think I will have to go with the downloaded version. How does it work though (in the case of DRM/etc)? any help/comments would be appreciated!

If you can get it from a store then buy the disk my download speed is moving at a whoping 11kb/s and there is not phone support for their download service.

Indeed, I was wondering the same thing. After reading the mixed reviews on Aspyr's downloading service from other forums, I'm leaning towards finding the game in a store. Though, I've called a handful of Apple Retail Stores in my area and no one has a physical copy of CoD4. Has anyone had luck in finding it in a store?

The most important question is two fold, can someone please answer it:
1) Is there a way to install it more then 2 times should you format your laptop. What happens on my third or fourth format? Do I have to rebuy the damn game or pirate it or something?
2) Does this allow you to just click the game and play without having to have a virtual or real disc in. I.E. is there no stupid 'check' thing. Does anyone know if the retail/physical media version WILL have a insert cd check?
Someone please help!!

I purchased and downloaded COD4 from Aspyr on Sept 25. Download speed was about 400Kb and it took about 5 hours to dl the whole thing. Size was about 6GB.
One I downloaded it, I copied it to the application folder. The whole game is in there, so I can run it straight from the HD without any further virtual disk or anything like that. I did back up the downloaded dmg file to an external so I can re-install if my system crashes. I have no idea if I can exceed the two more installs.
Awesome game, BTW.
Hope this helps.

Sent two mails to support, no answer yet.
Self-explanatory i would say.

Is the direct download going to be more expensive then the retail? It seems cheaper on Amazon.
Does anyone know if the physical media will make you have the disc in the drive to play?

the download only costs more because of the OPTIONAL protection plan.
However I am now on my 4th download atempt and it still says I have days to go before I can unplug my computer and move it. (using a laptop)
Still no response from tech support so for now I will just have to wait for the download to maybe hurry up.
IF YOU CaN GET A DISK BUY IT, I think that having the disk in while you play is a small price to pay for those who can drive to a store that carries the game unlike pore saps like me.

What about the ability to only install 3 times. Does this still stand? thats the real hang up for me, I dont care about download speeds, etc.

its not the install its activating it, which I think you can probubly over ride by saving what ever configuration files it makes once the game is activated.
And on that same note if you are constanltly reformating your mac and reinstalling the OS playing a game is the least of your problems
I beleave the inhibitor is still there as they don't even let you donwload the file more than 15 times without saying you're out of luck

Just to clarify, what's your internet connection? I would think a company like Aspyr would have colocated servers that would have some hefty bandwidth, but I could be wrong too!

Same thing happened to me. I sent an email to Aspyr wondering what I should do, still no reply. Because of my eagerness to play the game on my mac, I decided to try to buy their "Extended Download Service". That gave me the ability to try to download the game once more but then I was again greeted by "Attempts Exceeded".
Aspyr: If you're going to offer this as a viable alternative to the disc version, make it work. Don't tell me I only have 5 attempts to download the game and then not answer your support email.
If they ever respond, I will simply ask for a full refund and buy the disc the next time I see it.

Buy it from retail.
Aspyr's download service is full of fail. It's DRM scheme is ridiculous, and as shown above, the service fails in many other aspects.
If you want to see how a download service SHOULD work, see Steam. It's Windows-only, sadly.
Don't support Aspyr's crap, buy it on disc.

its a school connection (Coastal Carolina University) and while its not the fasting thing on earth its typically much better than this.
I can normally manage about 300kb/s down with a torrent.

My main concern is will the retail version have "Insert Disc to Play" DRM. If it does, I will buy the online version. I am sick of having to scour the web for cracks so I dont have to have a disc in to play.

I purchased the game this morning, click "DOWNLOAD", Speed Download app tried to reconnect several times because I was cut out by Aspyr or Digital River servers, and now they tell me I cannot download it because I tried too many times !! I emailed DR and Aspyr (GameAgent) but by reading other members posts, I should not expect any answers.
There refund policy is as well bad : They WILL NOT refund any online digital goods. So they steal your money (and it is more expensive than the retail), you cannot download (well at least part of it, but hey ! It is 6.5 GB after all).
So, now I am calm,................... Anybody had any luck with DR or Aspyr in terms of : replying to emails, giving back refunds or allowing more download times ?

Well I'm certainly glad I bought the Windows version after Aspyr delayed the release of COD4 past May '08.
The only download service I've used is Steam, and I think it's great. But from what I've heard about other download services (like direct2drive from ign.com) and now Aspyr, isn't great.
I love Steam though. You can download as many times as you want. The only tradeoff is that you need an internet connection so that it can connect to your account when launching the game.
They do have an "offline mode" though, but i'm not totally sure how it works.
I wish you guys the best of luck : \
EDIT:: BTW, fredsarran, did you say you were using Speed Download? I thought you had to download it through Aspyr's download program? I don't know if I'd recommend using a third party download manager with that because I think the way it works is buy opening multiple downloads simultaneously (or so I've been told), which could explain why it's telling you that you reached your download limit.

Putting a the disc inside your computer isn't that hard to do. And since everyone is having so much trouble downloading the game i would recommend just buying it from apple online. Shipping is free and costs about $59 with tax. I ordered mine, it shipped the day i ordered, and got it in four days.

You guys underestimate how annoying that is for some of us. I refuse to buy a game that requires me to put the disc in. More often then not I am at a friends or somewhere where I forgot my disc. It also puts wear and tear on my mac book pro and makes it lag (when opening finder). It also is noisy.
These reasons have been stated over and over by many people. If you dont mind good for you but I do! :P

I have read on another forum that when downloading from those sites, I should use the Safari download manager. It does make sense about the GameAgent Mac Client but they do not specify that on the site. Actually they do not specify anything about how to download, but just let you know about the specific requirements.
Either way, this download limit is total crap. When you pay more than $50 to download more than 6GB that is DRM, you expect a good service.
In response to another member post, my reasons to buy online are :
1-I could not wait for a European release to buy in shop.
2-I have money on PayPal that I need to use.
I am now downloading the CoD4 file from another forum. Nothing illegal as I own a serial number.

Aspyr - Singlehandedly helping enforce the stereotype that Macs dont game with bulls*** moves like these.
I hope Activision, now that they are merged with Blizzard, will possibly hire some people to port their stuff in-house to Mac.

As I am on a Mac, I can't use Internet Explorer (or Netscape) without installing Windows again, which I refuse to do since it's a Mac game.
Here are a couple of images while trying to download the game, as you can see, image one shows that one of the downloads is 2.8GB while the other is 6.8GB. They are both supposedly the same file. The next one shows that by the time they are finished, they are both only 2.8GB and won't mount.

Thanks a ton Aspyr... I don't know how anyone has received this game as it looks like the file on the server is screwed up. If anyone knows a solution to the problems I've had, please let me know. I'm tired of dealing with Aspyr.

Sorry for the double post,
We can't just abandon the download method, I would love to, but I have already paid Aspyr $60 and their refund policy clearly states there will be no refund for online orders. I don't think this game is worth $120 to me. If they won't refund my money when all is said and done, I will get them to send me a hard copy without a serial and will use the serial I bought online.

Hi, new to these forums. I too was unable to download an usable copy of CoD4 from Game Agent. Of course there was no response to emails about resetting the number of downloads, or any response at all, for that matter.
What I did do was get a refund by calling them. Their number was hard to find, as it's not listed anywhere on their website.

Before downloading, please make sure you have legally payed for a copy and that you have a original and unused serial number from Aspyr.
To ADMINS and MODS, I am not trying to promote piracy but trying to help our fellow members that struggle with crap service like Aspyr provides.
If you need help or have any problems, please post or PM me. I will try to help out. I myself found those links after being very frustrated with Aspyr, GameAgent and Digital River. I downloaded, assembled, entered my serial number and now it works great ! This is one of the best FPS I know and works great maxed out (with Antialiasing OFF) on the latest iMac 3.06GHZ.

FWIW . . . This advice obviously does not apply to those who have already purchased the Aspyr download, but I ordered it from Apple on-line on Oct. 2nd and according to FedEx, it will be delivered today. I had many of the same questions/doubts expressed here about downloading the game. I would say just order the media and be done with it. By the looks of it, the download is a bit of a crap shoot and you may wait a few days to get issues resolved anyway.
The Apple store previously indicated availability as "Ships in 6-8 weeks." I waited until it indicated "Ships in 1-5 business days" since I assumed they had them in stock, and placed the order. BTW: As of a few minutes ago, the status is still "Ships in 1-5 Business Days". $54.95 with free shipping.

Anyone know if the retail serial works with the downloaded version? If it does downloading the game from Rapidshare or some other source might be the way to go, then just enter the serial for your retail DVD. No need to find the DVD every time you want to play.
I've got the retail version in the post it should arrive tomorrow :D

I am starting to think I should have mail ordered mine because this **** is just ridiculous.
Personally I fail to see how forcing us to use their download server prevents theft when anyone could just make a torrent of the game and the crack for activation will probubly be made by some one who owns the game.
Making the download uninteruptable is not protecting anyone its just making the download option as anoying as possible.

Its not Aspyr thats handling the download service its Digital River. just so we are all clear on that one point.

Anyone know if the retail serial works with the downloaded version? If it does downloading the game from Rapidshare or some other source might be the way to go, then just enter the serial for your retail DVD. No need to find the DVD every time you want to play.
I've got the retail version in the post it should arrive tomorrow :D
This is a good idea. Could one of the brave souls that bought the online version upload it to say - a private FTP for the rest of us who will then buy the game in physical media?? Maybe the keys are different though.

I hate to say it, but Aspyr has a lot more control over it then they own up to. Digital River provides bandwidth, server space, and payment processing. Their support can only increase download limits and handle refunds.
I have had a lot of back-and-forth with Aspyr support and THEY have increased my download limit multiple times. Digital River isn't selling the game, they are providing a vehicle for Aspyr to sell the game online.
As to my success/failure: Aspyr finally gave me the option to receive a hard copy of the media and use the serial online. All in all, they weren't hard to deal with, but I wish it didn't take them half a business day (or more) to respond to email/support tickets.
Hope you can all get the game, hopefully with less hassle then I did. I think the copy of the game on servers in the Rocky Mountain area is corrupted 2.81 GB into the file. That's been my experience anyway.
Hope this information helps all of you,

I really want to help and as soon as I notice that the links are down, I update them to working ones :) So now, it has been the 3rd time updated. This time it is only 18 files of 400MB each and the server is quicker ;)
I have not tried it but I guess they are working and that the final file is the same. Those links comes from a very reliable source.

You only need the disc in for single player, so it isn't that bad.

Wait so I can play the game in multiplayer with the physical media with OUT having the disc in? Cause I never intend on touching the single player - I just want to play multiplayer.

This will take 9 days to download from mega-upload due to their 2 downloads-per-24hr period rule. Thanks for the upload though, I'm sure it will help somebody.

My copy just arrived! The retail serial did not work with the download version. But I can confirm what Delu says, you only need the DVD in the drive for single player mode!

I have tried to peace them together 2 times now and I am still unable to mount the disk image.
However now I am getting halfway decent download speeds (more to blame my college for the slow rate) at about 200kb/s so I will keep everyone informed if that works out instead.

That'd be great seeing as how I finally finished up and guess what it failed again.
I just don't get how limiting the download helps protect the game from theft if you still need a code to activate the damn thing.
For all the trouble this is worth they should atleast lift that burden.

Finally got an email response from aspyr explaining the finer parts OF DOWNLOADING A FILE. which got me a little angry, they did however say I am welcome to try as many more times as it takes to get the file.
Well I am now using the windows half of my mac (boot camp not parallels) and tried the download in both IE and Chrome which failed because the file is to big so I then started the download in firefox.
If that fails I will try using Free download manager and the next post will tell my results. I know sending money microsoft ways is not the most atractive way to download this file but at this point I feel that the download install may have been simply a big mistake with the current level of DRM enforcement.

I have not confirmed this yet but if you can catch the file when the connection is dropped try using wget -c to retreive the remainder of the file. so far the second windows download seems to be working.
Method is as foolows
open up terminal
type cd /path/to/file/directory hit enter
then wget -c http://www.theurltheservergenerates.com/
you can copy and paste the url in mac terminal.

I dunno why you bother dl'ing the damn thing anyway when it's beennothing but trouble since the first day...I ordered a copy direct from apple and it took 3 days to get here, seems so much easier and less stressful to just do it that way,and seeing as how you don't even need a disc to play MP, where's the logic???
anyhow, just seems like a big hassle avoided by buying it straight out. It'd be like a bunch of people you watch die by jumping in a puddle and decide to jump in too...cause maybe it'll be different for you...lol, not the case:p
but I hope to see you all on the battlefield soon...:D

Yeah, that pissed me off too. When I was told that I should disable my screensaver, I was like: How dumb do you think I am?
They told me the same thing: Unlimited downloads, that actually meant 45  I don't really know how 45 = Unlimited...

wget is a tricky tool.
know this if you download the file from the official servers and it is 6.87gb in size you are most likely in luck.
the second time I tried to download it I used firefox on windows took me two tries and 11 hours (which I suspect is because of the University capping bandwidth) but it finally worked.
install/activation was smooth and withen moments after install I was online regulating noobs.
for those of you who are interested I will be doing a review of download game services at The Coffee Desk dot com (http://thecoffeedesk.com/) which should be up by Monday though I am aiming for Sunday. (Our webserver is weak though so don't be discouraged if the page does not load simply wait and try later as you may be preventing me from getting to the server myself)
UPDATE: It looks like I will have it up monday afternoon

I think the trick to the download is catching it when it fails.
If one could catch it when it fails they could simply go to gameagent.com and get themselves a new link then use that link with wget -c (executed from withen the initial download folder) and continue the download without having to worry about aspyr's ****** download service.
Really if they where not doing so much to limit the simple act of the download from the server it would be ok because that long download could be paused or restarted.
Either way the download version works fine but don't expect to run this game at maximum settings without using either the imac 24" or the mac pro

Like some of you, I was foolish enough to try and download the game. I've gone back and forth with their customer service department all week. I called the number listed in a previous post and they denied the refund.
The closest I've gotten to a complete file is 6 gb. Sometimes Safari will restart the download, sometimes it can't.
The latest error message is-
kCFErrorDomainCFNetwork error 302
I called my credit card company last night to contest the charge.
I also tried the links to 70 files earlier in the thread. The first downloaded OK. On the second one I got a message that I've hit the limit for a free customer. I'm not interested in paying more to download something I've already paid for. Is this file on any bit torrent sites? A google search didn't point me to anything.
I've played about 10 Aspyr games through the years. All legally bought and paid for. They just lost a paying customer.
Thanks for any help you can send my way.

If you can get it from a store then buy the disk my download speed is moving at a whoping 11kb/s and there is not phone support for their download service.
Yes, if you can get a disc copy, than get a disc copy - otherwise, there's a huge chance you'll be waiting quite some time. Aspyr is great, BTW.
If anyone is looking for the PC equivalent, go to Direct2Drive. (http://www.direct2drive.com/)

Try using Firefox, that's what finally worked for me... If that doesn't work, I recommend opening a ticket at support.aspyr.com and requesting a DVD copy of the game (since you already purchased a serial number). That's what I did and I received the DVD copy 3 days after I finally got the download to work.
Hope this helps,

Hi Bill,
I also got very frustrated. But Aspyr and Digital River replied to my emails pretty quick and allowed me to download more times to finish my download. Anyway the file was corrupted and I complained by email at least 5 times, and they eventually refund (even when they say that they can't because of online policy). I basically threatened them to bring them to court because I payed for something I still do not have and that there policy is unfair.
Good luck.

Hi Guys-
Thanks for the help. I did get the game to work this weekend. How - By downloading the dmg file from a bit torrent site.
I downloaded the file in one try using the same computer/settings/connection that their "tech support" folks said were stopping the download.
Thanks Aspyr!!! You just lost a paying customer.

I was right in your shoes, thinking I would never buy from Aspyr again, especially since the PC version of CoD4 had released a multi-player patch by the time I got mine installed. BUT when they released the patch that brought the Mac version up to the PC version TWO WEEKS AFTER THE WINDOWS PATCH, they won me back. That kind of response is virtually unheard of with ported games! (For example: the WoW patch for Mac was released 8 months after the equivalent Windows patch - And Blizzard made both versions, not so with CoD4)
They did an A++ job at porting this game to Mac and they have shown they are committed to keeping this version up to par with the windows version. I've had this game for 8 days and I am totally addicted to it. Give it some time, I for one think that if Aspyr releases another port of a game I like, I will buy it at the snap of a finger.
